Their lack of stress is truly legendary. Even shops don't operate on a specific schedule. Each owner opens for business at whichever hour they see fit. Banks open at noon. Grocery stores sometimes are just left unlocked without anyboydy in them; you open the door, you get in, you take whatever you want, you leave the money on the counter and you leave. They throw major feasts and fairs in summer time, where they all dance and party and have fun and laugh and hug and kiss. So, there is no great mystery as to why they live so long and fulfilling lives.

@@normajeane507 Well the original comment says the opposite. That they open at noon, meaning 12:00. While it is too hot between 12-4 bankers work in a closed office with AC, it's not like they open under the sun in the fields.
@@jessicas7482 I lived on the Grecian island of Zakynthos for years, shops weren't open between 12-4. Only morning and night.
No wonder the country defaulted... This carefree decadent lifestyle is antagonistic to the Protestant work ethic driven culture of the west. They should be proud to retain this idyllic, less serious way of life.

We live now in Ikaria. And if you think the elderly gentleman likes his wine a little too much, let me share a story of my papou (grandfather). At a check up before his 90th birthday, the doctor said to him ‘you must drink water.’ And he said ‘I do, doctor. Everyday I add it to my wine.’

My grandad lived to 93 years in good health, and whenever someone insisted he should drink water he would kindly say 'water is only for showering'
He always drank a glass of red wine with his meals :)
In Croatia in the coastal region of Dalmatia that's actually a popular drink known as "Bevanda" (mixing still water with red wine). It's usually drank during a "fjaka" state

I've visited Ikaria once in my 21's. The (one and only i think) bakery had no service available. You select the bread and leave the cash. There was also a note next to the cash register; "if you don't pay, there will be no bread for 1 week". Imagine the stressless life of the residents there. I'll be visiting again for sure!
This definitely counters my family’s attitude of “push, push, push, make it happen. And if your body starts reacting, push through it.”
I stopped living that way and I’m exploring different ways of living, reading your comment really illuminates me and inspires me to imagine a different way of existing :-) starting by no longer stressing about things having to go my way, and now I’m looking at ways to approach my service to people. I like this idea of doing what works for me and giving people the abc, hey if you do this, service is here. This is what happens if you don’t, and that’s it. Easy peasy. I will visit this place for at least a month sometime 😍

My Uncle who comes from Ikaria said that the stress level there is so low that people can sleep with the doors wide open and leaving the keys on the car door. It may sound crazy but it's true
well, there are 50 people on that island and they all know one another. My grandparents would never lock the door but they lived near a mountain and could't leave it completely open because some wild animal could barge in.

I live on a Greek island with 34,000 population and I have never ever locked my car and when I go shopping I always leave my keys insi8de the car on the ignition. The only time I lock my house door is when I leave the island. I have been living here for the past 17 years from Canada and I grow a lot of my own produce and only buy local meat whenever I eat meat which is rarely. Fresh eggs from my neighbours chickens and homemade wine. Simple things. Im 68 and take zero meds.

This is what all the world should be like. Family agriculture, community, healthy food, happy people, nature... No artificial things, no poisons, skyscrapers, endless factories, no gigantic crops and billions of animals tortured in mass productions, turning rivers of water into rivers of feces, no poverty, inequality or crimes... I wish there was a big movement for the world to go back to that kind of life.
Sounds beautiful but not reality unfortunately. Cities help concentrate people into a dense place that actually minimizes land use, waste and allows for more open space. Also if it wasn't for the green revolution of the 1950's the whole world would be deforested and we would be in a population bomb. Also animals in agriculture actually help with limiting the use of artificial fertilizer and play a crucial role with waste management on the wasted parts of crops that would otherwise go to waste, something known as economy of scope. Things are not so cut and dry as it seems and I just gave you the tip of the iceberg of the facts, with plenty of things I can go on and on about.

That’s the strategy used by those who profit from those problems, who make millions or billions and buy politicians to implement their model, and try to “educate” the population that their model is good.
The average cities we have today only help concentrate people, but actually maximize land use and waste. It’s a gigantic need of resources to build those cities and keep them going, and those resources have to come from somewhere. Green cities would be much better, or green communities like the one in this video - you are still concentrating people, but without a lot of problems associated with our model of modern cities.
According to the UN, animal in agriculture is a top factor for land degradation, deforestation, soil, water and air pollution, it pollutes more than all transports combined. A big percentage of the crops produced in the world is not to feed humans, but to feed livestock - that’s a main factor why so much land is needed. Family farming and a plant-based diet would have a much smaller impact.

@thomasbh Have you watched the video or at least read the title: "Oldest Life Expectancy in the World" - what is their lifestyle like? In the past, people didn't live longer because Medicine wasn't so advanced.
Anyway, you guys come with hypothetical arguments and data financed by the meat industry trying to reject what I said and the reality shown in the video: a green community is better for people, for animals, for the environment. I don't have hypothetical arguments and no lobbyist data the way you have, it's all concrete, just watch the video.
I didn't realize how much I hate the constant stress about money that comes along with living in the US until the video ended and I realized I was crying LOL. this looks like a beautiful way to live life.
I stayed for awhile on Paros Island, on the coast in a small fishing village. I was struck very quickly with how natural, relaxed, and laid back it all was there. That’s when I stopped wearing makeup and colouring my hair. I too started to relax, to enjoy, to really taste and experience. We have no idea what we’re missing when we live in cities all our lives.

@@lynnaoldham8889 In many places in the world, especially where i'm from the in the UK, the idea of being "all natural" and not wearing make up is horrifying to most girls and women, the very idea of it is humiliating being seen in public without a face full of makeup. It's years of being told what we should look like on magazines, tv's etc that the idea of a natural look is looked at as dirty and "hippy" even still, i think it's probably the worst it's ever been for the younger generations, you only have to walk around places in Essex or up north in Newcastle to see how psychologically fucked people are when it comes to body confidence, it's such a shame.

When I was a kid, I would visit my home country during the summer. Boring and nothing to do in a small village. Everyone was dumb because of the simple way of living. Few tiny shops, clinic, one school k-12. Much rather live in southern California than the middle of nowhere. Most of you people wouldn't a month there. As soon as I check my phone. Life in most Greek rural areas (not only islands) is fantastic. The people, food and the way of life in general is enviable. Do not forget that this video is shot during summertime in the winter its much much different.
But still winter is rather short compared to rest of Europe. Greece has the most sunny days per year compared to any European country
That is true. I have relatives in Greece who live in rural villages. The lifestyle there is equally laid back. Two of my aunts living in rural villages are 87 and 90 years old respectively. And they are both still quite sharp.

i actually hitchhiked to this island with a person l knew for a couple of hours. we spent days just wild camping in a canyon, dancing with locals in the woods, attending their traditional festivals, swimming and meeting tons of laid back brilliant people. that island has a special vibe to it and l was never before so much "in the present"

How do you hitchhike to ikaria ? Did you sneak aboard the ferry without paying ? Did you happen to run into a fisherman who was going there on his boat ?
That 86 year old still moves fluidly and does strenuous activities. I couldn't believe it when the reporter gave his age. Here in the US he would have been stuck in a retirement home to vegetate.
In Greece we don't tend to abandon our parents in a retirement home we take care of them till they die

Its easier there because flats and houses are more affordable, here in germany you are paying 550.000 for a 3 room flat, and belive me for 4 people thats tight, not to mention when you have 2 grand parents. Its not like we dont want to but we simply cant afford it most of the times.

A retirement home is partially financed by the state and the people there will take care of all the medical needs of the patients, you have no clue what you are talking about.
Yeah, go move outside the big citys, try to find a job there if it is all that easy here in germany, guess why nobody is doing it... because it isnt easy.
When you dont own property you can screw getting a big enough apartment for you and your parents. You can howhever try to live near them to take care of them easily.
Greeks in germany live by the same standards as we do, means if you all want to stay together, live with 7 people in a 4 bedroom flat.
Have fun with kids, your wife working full time and paying 1.600 € for the flat in one month.

It's lots of things: diet, culture, and exercise. Did you kids even watch it? Being the opposite of the USA helps people live longer. That's the takeaway. The correlation between unhappiness and short lives isn't a secret either. Try researching and *reading* about it.

You miss one point. In Greek cities probably life is similar to most modern countries. It is in rural remote places people are laid back and enjoy a healthy life style. Remember the IT young guy moving to the island with wife and daughter?

I was born in Greece moved to Canada in 1977 at the age of six, now even with all of Greece’s problems I’m ready to get the hell out of Canada and go back to a simpler life as it was intended, I’m done being a slave to the dollar and the illusion of what real wealth is.

Yes, this is true because American government don't give the middle class any safety nets. When you lose your job you can lose everything. Very little job security in American compared to Europe and even Asia.
Not everyone, just the poor and the middle class. The rich get to live a very stress-free life.
Thats why many americans come to stay in greek islands (fact).
Not just that, the food you buy is designed to kill you..
Yet the Soviet Union, where everything was socialized, had a low life expectancy, I think it was 65 years for men, and suicide was high too, but maybe due to weather

My father was from Greece and my happiest memories are living there as a child with my parents. I miss the simple caring love and Faith, definitely has been way more stress in the US. I'd love to return to Greece one day, perhaps even marry there

If you think about it, this is such an ancient, simple way of livng. No junk food, they grow everything on the island with fishing being the principal trade...we are looking right into ancient Greek times and it's amazing, honestly.

I am not Greek but I have been to this beautiful island many times. It is truely a fantastic place with some of the best food in the world. Can't wait to return. My Grandma was a Greek...from Sparta and she lived to be close to 100~on the ball until the end.her Father lived to be over 100. In my trips to Greece I observed in the Greeck people a spontaneous , almost naive love for life that extends to their way of life. Their fruits have an exceptional taste!
Fruits and vegetables are picked when they're ripe, that's why they have taste and aroma - if they did the same with the produce we get in North America for example, most of it would go bad by the time it gets here. Lots of produce here is ripened artificially, ex. tomatoes are green when they arrive.
It's not "tiny" But it's a smaller island on world scale. But it's 40 km long. But yes. Greece is heaven, and every place in Greece is unique and special in their very own ways. It's crazy that this is the case. Also. Greece has more special culinary local cuisines of exceptional longevity. The Cretans with the Cretan cuisine absolutely is on the same level as the Ikarian one. The only difference is that Crete has been more influenced by richness and thus more meats and so on than Ikaria. But those Cretans who eat the true Cretan cuisine and thus stay true to it, all become crazy old and without ailments mostly. Look up the 7 country study which took 40 years, with countries like Japan, Netherlands, USA, Finland, Italy, and Greece with regions like Crete. And Crete blew every other place away. Coronary heart disease and cancer was even 6 times lower than in Japan ( the 2nd best performer in this study). So yes. Greece has aside of heavenly food from all it's local regional cuisines atleast 2 cuisines that will make you the oldest on the planet. The Cretan and Ikarian one.
What does the true traditional diet consist of?
@@dionysus8967 same as this video, sort of. No meat most of the times. Fishes, mushrooms and fresh cooked snails. Feta, mizithra and graviera cheese. Lots of herbs, from tea to food. Extra virgin oil in everything. Fresh veggies. Cretan yogurt. No/low sugar, no/low salt, Greek (Cypriot/Turkish/Arabian) coffee. 10 small meals every day, mostly freshcut.

Japanese also eat very similar foods so they also live very long. Majority of Americans don't eat fish, few drinks wine, most Americans use cheap cooking oils and won't buy expensive premium organic extra virgin olive oils, and most drink overly sweet Starbucks drinks instead of simple coffee or espressos like Europeans do.

I'm greek. I've been to Ikaria. So i can surely tell you that with the first encounter with the locals you will see that they live in a much lower rythm of life, no one will get them stressed up. They used to it, and it has become their way of life throught the years. Amazing island to visit tho.

This is why I started homesteading 4 years ago. I’ve created a permaculture food forest with a variety of fruit trees as well as berry bushes like red raspberries, wild black berries, acai (a super fruit) as well as some other varieties. Of course I do extensive gardening and raise chickens also for eggs and meat. I’m doing all this on just about an acre of land. It doesn’t take much and of that acre I’m probably currently only producing on 1/5 of that which means there’s much room for growth. We can all live this way to a certain degree. Just have to be innovative. Great video!
There's an almost therapeutic quality to spending time with older folks in a slow-paced, wholesome, harmonious setting, far away from the stress and anxiety of the rat race. I hate the rate race so much. When you're in your twenties maybe the hustle and bustle is what you crave. When I retire I might decide to take up bekeeping and live on a houseboat with lavender bushes on the roof.

My theory is that it's not so much "healthy" food but rather being disconnected from the hectic world. That and the ocean is very relaxing IMO.
