I have owned my Kanyon for a year now no probs but i did put 15x15 aluminium angle strips in as i think same one else has to works well as for the wheel on the back i put same thick plastic across the inside had no probs
I added 15mm x15mm aluminium angle from end to end to reinforce the front and rear brackets. Not that expensive an upgrade to do,£6 from B&Q for a 1.5 metre length. Drill holes for both the mounting screws;bodyposts;horizontal screw that goes through the same block and a hole drilled through both the end brackets and angle, fastened with a 3mm bolt and nut. Move the spare from the rear door to the bonnet, keeps the added weight low.
I've been waiting for this video. I'm still going to buy one, first job will be to brace thoes brackets! I may put the spare wheel on the roof after watching this video. thanks for the vid 👍
after your vid on the bugsta i HAD to have one ! and dangit you've gone and done it again, i NEED this truck !! ... now... who's gonna tell the wife ?? keep up the good work great vid !!
Yeah, ditto mate, Im now looking at my local model shop site and I can see "in stock" - being a photographer I wonder if I can get it and produce some nice shots and claim it as business ;)
Had the kanyon for month now love it, Changed the motor to a hpi 35t and the esc to a hobbywing 1060 performs great. The brackets for the body posts i took out the hex screws drilled through the small plastic inserts and added small metal bolts with nuts to hold them, works really well also planning on adding small support arms for the brackets
Today on the basis of this video I built an aluminium bracket on the inside of my canyon to hold the spare wheel that goes across the back and down the sides so hopefully no chance of my back end coming to grief so to speak! Thanks for saving me some money JD!
Well JD sorry to see your poor truck a little worse for wear! As you know I have had My Kanyon since November and apart from loosing one spot light No damage to report! I bought a set of six replacement lights for it for about £10 so these will last a long while although most Kanyon owners mount the roof lights further back to avoid damage. The bracket issue I have not had a problem with as I saw before I got it this is a weak point so got some Aluminium box section and cable tie from underneath the brackets end to end which makes the chassis much more solid funny enough even makes it easier to get the body on!. Got a few trucks now and I would recommend the Kanyon over any other crawler for its sheer size, scale features out the box,and amazing crawler capability, you can buy a £480 TRX4 or one of these and have £300 change and in my opinion the Kanyon looks far better to :) So to sum up, I like this truck :)
A very good discussion and review. I am more into drones at the moment but the more is see of the RC vehicle world, the closer I am coming to acquiring one.
Hey Dave thank you matey. If you get yourself a good RC ground vehicle then, man, you will be hooked. Give me a shout if you ever are considering one and if i can help, i will :-)
Brilliant review very informative. I bought one of my sons the ftx mauler a few years ago and I'm still impressed with what it can do for how much I paid so much that I may have to buy myself the kanyon.
I have the VRX bf4j which is the same. Run two long L brackets along the length of the bumpers under the metal overhangs. Supports the weight and it's a cheap mod. Think I got a long aluminium L bracket from my hardware store for about 5 bucks. Cut it to length, drill holes where the screws go. A great upgrade
Best mod I have seen to support the body shell mount is the L-shaped alluminum bar mod. Works great! In Germany this car is sold from "df models" in yellow, pink and orange. Maybe camouflage too, not sure. I think it is called DF4j xxl. This may be interesting for UK buyers.
Thanks. Just what I was after. I cracked my body in the same places in the first hour i had the car. Hot glue gun worked a treat on the inside to reinforce where the spare wheel sits.
Just bough this arrived today and I standby thought the same as you with the weak points lol gonna sort them out proto haha cheers for an awesome video pal
great video mate. ive been researching entry level crawlers at a budget and this seems to be looking like the winner. what are your thoughts? have you any other recommendations or should i go for this one?
Hiya my RUclips friend, I have the exact same model as you've got and I love how it moves about like you have explained. It's a total shame that the designers of the FTX 4x4 Kenyon RC Crawler, didn't make the rest of the body all metal instead of just each end, it would of made it a heck of a lot stronger than it is. But I'm still loving the 4x4 FTX Kenyon. If you ever find a way of making it stronger please keep me up to date on the issue my RUclips friend, because I'd like to make mine stronger. I've screwed all the parts that I can to keep it firm, but I've found that a few of them just keep turning round and round, which is a bit of a pain really. Maybe using some locking glue on the screws, if that may work at all?
Good video. How about changing the lights to a light bar. I have one on my rig. I too have rolled my Truck multiple times and my light bar is still intact. There are plenty options on eBay
Hey Ricco, I have a 3000 may Ni-Cad and that runs on this for approx 40 mins of slow crawling. To accept liposuction you would need to change the ESC and make it compatible. 👍😀
Great vid and great looking truck I think this is going to be my first crawler. Looking at this objectively would a pair of light ali L shaped beams running front to back not help brace the weak points without any intrusion to the articulation? Could add extra screw holes beyond the original mounting points so the beams cant flex either end and the whole would be a lot stiffer and less likely to loosen
Would Griplock solve the bracket issue? I'm looking to get a crawler for a 4 year old and this is high up on the list. If I can solve it with Griplock I won't have to visit every other week to fix it. Thanks!!
Just got one of these and out of the box that front bracket you were talking was bent downward such that when turning the wheels would always rub on the front bumper. Thankfully after tightening the screws and bending the bracket up a little bit it’s all good now, but it’s definitely one of the weak points in the design.
Cosmetic damage is going to happen if you use them for what they are intended to do, in my opinion. I would think the two hooks maybe just for looks. Great recap on your views of the truck.
Hey JD 👍 great video buddy and thank you for the information as I'm looking to buy myself a true crawler rig for the first time and don't fancy paying the prices like say TRX4 (around £400/£450) so I believe this is a better option .. as for the body -- do you think with a little bit of Jimmy rig tomfoolery I could possibly fit my wpl d12 shell onto this chassis
I assume you have seen 009 adventures fix for these brackes... Really simple with alloy angle. if not check it out. I'm going to follow suit. Great vid dude
I just got one for my son, there is no difference in speed between settings, about 5kph. I put a 35T motor in and it has double the speed, and still got loads of torque. Battery doesn't last long now, but have a 3600ma one in the way.
I have this crawler (see my vids). It's the VRX Racing BF-4J but it's the same vehicle. I stumbled upon a youtube channel called RC Havoc UK and his video called "FTX Kanyon Weak Spots Fixed" and i think his L channel aluminum bars fix seems to make the most sense. I'm currently implementing it on mine. Check it out. I have had an issue with a pumpkin rubbing on a bearing that's a little lop sided. Or the axle shaft is slightly bent but I think that's specific to my crawler only and not an indication of every vehicle. Plus mine has a simple fix. Anyways, hope some of my comments here have helped.
All valid points JD, nearly broke a light myself. Am looking into reinforcing those brackets myself but not sure which material to use yet. As for the bodyshell we use this tape sourced from Screwfix www.screwfix.com/p/diall-cloth-tape-42-mesh-white-50mm-x-50m/6450v super sticky it allows the shell to flex without cracking.
Hey Paul thank you matey very much and thank you for the recommendation of that tape, i never would have thought to use that for the shell, on pay day i will be grabbing some.
Hey Stephen i have filmed loads of videos with it and it depends on hiw you use the truck ultimatley. If memory serves i was looking at no less than 15 mins and no more than 40 if crawling 👍
I've got one of these and I'll never put mine through all that I won't even put it through rugh terrain becouse it ruins a good model allways on smooth tarmac on a dry day
First off FTX cars are not british...they are as chinese as it gets ....anyway ..what are your experience with the axles ?? Same as Wraith?? better?? worse??
I have owned my Kanyon for a year now no probs but i did put 15x15 aluminium angle strips in as i think same one else has to works well as for the wheel on the back i put same thick plastic across the inside had no probs

im purchasing one very soon and im super excited :) great video pal and your beard game is on point haha
It's a ice truck to have in your arsenal. Definitely love the looks.....Thanks JD!!!
Thank you matey very much :-)
Got me into RC 2 years ago. Done chassis mod and all wheel steer now :D
Great video review, just what I need to convince me to buy I've been looking for a while and didn't really know where to start as a newbie. Great job
Hey James glad it was helpful mate, let me know how you get on 🙂👍
Had the kanyon for month now love it,
Changed the motor to a hpi 35t and the esc to a hobbywing 1060 performs great.
The brackets for the body posts i took out the hex screws drilled through the small plastic inserts and added small metal bolts with nuts to hold them, works really well also planning on adding small support arms for the brackets
Hey Calumm thank you bud, wow that sounds fantastic. I was considering changing the motor out once I've driven it into the ground lol. 🙂👍
@@jdquad only cost me about £20 for the upgrade but well worth it crawls awsome now
I also would be totaly glad to have it! I'm also glad you're doing so well, my dear matie. Send you hughs and best vibes. Greetings!
Thank you very much my friend, really appreciate that. Same to you matey 🙂👍
Today on the basis of this video I built an aluminium bracket on the inside of my canyon to hold the spare wheel that goes across the back and down the sides so hopefully no chance of my back end coming to grief so to speak! Thanks for saving me some money JD!
Excellent stuff matey! Sounds like that will help no end 🙂👍

Likewise Polecat, i recommend this truck 100 times over. The shear size of it as well as the power of the slow crawler gear is just incredible.
A very good discussion and review. I am more into drones at the moment but the more is see of the RC vehicle world, the closer I am coming to acquiring one.

Thanks. Just what I was after. I cracked my body in the same places in the first hour i had the car. Hot glue gun worked a treat on the inside to reinforce where the spare wheel sits.
Hey Jamie glad it helped mate 🙂👍
First thing I do is tape the inside of the body with 4" wide Gorilla® duct tape. Helps prevent the cracking issue.
Excellent video. Thank for sharing such a good, honest opinion!
You convinced me! FTX comet on order ! 😃👍
Excellent Simon, let me know what you think when it arrives :-)
Just bought the ftx hi rock and I have to agree the brand has a really nice feel to it and you don't feel like you have paid over the top for it
Alittle shooglue and fiberglass tape will repair that body quite nicely! 😉 Cheers to you brother!
Thank you John bud, ill give that a go :-)
Just bough this arrived today and I standby thought the same as you with the weak points lol gonna sort them out proto haha cheers for an awesome video pal
Thanks matey, hope you enjoy it 👍
great video. Are those 1.9 or 2.2 wheels? Diameter of tires?
they're 2.2".... go for some split rim alloy 2.2" beadlocks, look nice wrapped in the stock tyre!
great video mate. ive been researching entry level crawlers at a budget and this seems to be looking like the winner. what are your thoughts? have you any other recommendations or should i go for this one?

Great idea Yennamard, I have something similar planned for this 🙂👍
Im new to this...... can this thing run on lipos? Id like to get really long runs without changing the battery. Thanks.
Hey Ricco, I have a 3000 may Ni-Cad and that runs on this for approx 40 mins of slow crawling. To accept liposuction you would need to change the ESC and make it compatible. 👍😀
No you can you have to turn it off and hold the button on the esc until it beeps twice and then it should be in lipo mode
It’s a mega truck.
I’ll post a video on my channel about a couple of great mods to do for under £10
Great vid and great looking truck I think this is going to be my first crawler. Thanks Anthony, yup Marc and I are good friends and have spoken at length about the Kanyon. Thanks bud :-)
Thanks this vid really helped me out
Thanks Devon, glad it helped 🙂👍
That's a beauty
Thank you Bryan :-)
Great video and comment👍
Thank you JL :-)
I've had the ftx kanyon about 6 months love it but needs abit more speed
‘There are…..FOUR lights!!!!!’
Hi mate, I’m thinking of getting one of these. How quick are they when not crawling?
I just got one for my son, there is no difference in speed between settings, about 5kph. I put a 35T motor in and it has double the speed, and still got loads of torque. Battery doesn't last long now, but have a 3600ma one in the way.
Dry wall tape from builders merchants and shoogue will fix body fine as for chassis mounts angle alloy from bq will fix that !!
Thanks bud, ill give it a shot :-)

Hey PropGear how are you matey? Thank you very much indeed :-)
Hi, what is the battery run time with supplied battery?
Hey Stephen i have filmed loads of videos with it and it depends on hiw you use the truck ultimatley. If memory serves i was looking at no less than 15 mins and no more than 40 if crawling 👍
Brought 1 this morning am I goin to regret the purchase...
👍👍
Thank you bud :-)
3D PRINTED BRACKETS BE MADE SOON FOR ME ,YOU AND HOMIE PAUL JD
Awesome.
Thank you very much Heath that is very kind indeed mate :-)
Could you share the file please. Just ordered my ftx and now can’t wait lol
A tube of Shoo goo spread round all internal seams and you would not have a cracked shell buddy.
I've got one of these and I'll never put mine through all that I won't even put it through rugh terrain becouse it ruins a good model allways on smooth tarmac on a dry day
A good fun truck, hope you enjoy it David.
First off FTX cars are not british...they are as chinese as it gets ....anyway ..what are your experience with the axles ?? Same as Wraith?? better?? worse??
