I saw this when it first played at the National Theater in Washington DC in 1961 before going on to Broadway with Anna and Jerry Orbach. Always loved this show and the lovely music. Anna Maria was excellent and totally believable in difficult role as an innocent girl who finally faces reality as she joins the carnival. You believed that she didn't understand the puppets were not real for some time...she was just breathtaking. I played the cast album over and over.
I saw this show, when I was ten years old with Anna Maria in the lead on Broadway. She was enchanting. I wish video existed of her songs with the puppets.
This was my first Broadway show, and I loved it. Ms Alberghetti was brilliant, I was not at all impressed by Jerry Orbach (because I was 8 years old and didn't know what great acting meant), and Kaye Ballard was a delight. It was a matinee, so James Mitchell was absent. I was so in love with Ms Alberghetti (at 8 years old). "Beautiful Candy" is still a favorite song (with my children also), as well as "Love Makes the World Go 'Round". My favorite musical.
This was spectacular! TY for sharing it. I've never really seen many of her performances, but do remember and really like her. God Bless You and stay safe.
Look who should have played Maria in The 1961 West Side Story movie as composer Leonard Berstein wanted. She made Carnaval after she wasnt cast FOR WSS and received a Tony Award for her performance
Knock knock. Who's there? Anna Maria Alberghetti. Anna Maria Alberghetti who? Anna Maria Alberghetti in a taxi, honey, better be ready 'bout half past eight....
Beautiful absolutely beautiful ❤
Anna Maria was brilliant in the absolute application of the word, brilliant.
what a wonderful performance of this lovely song from the great musical Carnival by the beautiful and talented Anna Maria Alberghetti. loved it.
And the under appreciated composer/lyricist Bob Merrill.

Such a beautiful voice
A superlative performance in the perfect role for her.
Bellissima! Voce di angelo.
Always a delight! Anna Maria also made a Sullivan appearance with her sister Carla. I would like to see that one.

Wow. Haven’t thought about her in years….
I wonder if this show had a composer and lyricist? Why do their names appear NOWHERE?
