I lived at the Goodwill bins for the first ten or 15 years of my ebay career. And let me tell you it was like the wild west back then. When I first started going to the bins it was only .39 cents a pound! And the Goodwill hadn't caught on to ebay yet so the good stuff went straight into the bins. In fact the Goodwill bins in my town used to be a regular Goodwill store, the oldest one in town, so people were just used to donating there anyway. And none of the stuff went to other Goodwill stores it just went straight into the bins. Back then the bins were permanently fixed. This was years before the blue carts that they roll out that are already full of stuff. Back then they used giant cardboard boxes that they rolled out with pallet jacks, and the employee just crawled into the box and started throwing the stuff into the bins. The best part of it all was they didn't make us wait. We just started grabbing stuff as they threw it out. It was wild, people pushing and shoving and reaching over your shoulders. Man it was crazy and the picking was awesome! No problem back then to roll out of the store with over $500.00 worth of ebay stuff that you only paid ten or twenty bucks for. Every single day!

Hey Kevin, I'm a big fan and I love your content. I just have a different take on it. I come from East Africa and growing up I wore clothes that were made in the region. In the late '80s and '90s this completely shifted to 2nd hand clothing, a majority of eat from the United States. It is a double-edged sword - for the most part it killed the local fashion industry. The only thing that is locally made and locally sold are uniforms and even that is now being imported from China. At this point it's too late to reverse the effects because it is no longer profitable or sensible to start a clothing company in the region unless it's extremely niche. It is what it is but it was sad to see an entire industry be swallowed up by second hand clothing from another country flooding in. Even though I don't agree with how Indonesia is going about it, I can certainly understand. It's a weird and scary thing to watch and go through. The positive effects are that people are largely able to afford good quality clothes which was not the case before second-hand clothes flooded in.

      Remember Tom’s Shoes?
His donations single handedly ended the cobbling industry in all of Africa.
It also acted the same for shoes like the 2nd hand industry did to retailers in Africa.
I think Indonesia is doing a HUGE disservice to themselves as well as the world.
Literally…the MOST polluted river in the ENTIRE WORLD is the river where all our clothes get dyed.
The way companies are combating this, is to just not use Indonesia at all.
Indonesia used to dye clothes for the everyone in the entire world…now people are going to other places and even willing to pay more to NOT egregiously trash a river.

Reselling can be good side hustle, but the current supply process has some problems and Indonesia may be in part addressing a garbage problem and the clothing industry may be using the issue to their advantage.
A few months ago, I watched a documentary about the problem with used (second hand) clothing going to Africa and Asia. The supply chain is chocked by clothing discarded by foreign charities that they cannot use. Most of what ends up in the supply chain is junk (stained soiled or ripped) and cannot be resold. If anything sneaks through, the better items are stripped out by large job lot creators who resell the better items and sell junk lots to smaller scale resellers who are stuck with garbage. In the end this leaves mountains of clothing trash for local communities to deal with.

I hear you but the big picture suggests that free markets do a far better job of choosing winners and losers than the government regulators. I realize there are limits to this argument but it should be our default way of thinking in eras of dispute.

      @garlandragland Год назад

I definitely see your point when it comes to companies donating clothes. That kills local industry. Tom's Shoes is the gold standard example of this. That said, as far as second hand goods being sold goes, I think the free market works best.

The biggest factor within the world’s landfill situation…is clothing.
85% of the worlds clothing ends up at a dump site somewhere.
I think this law more has to do with importing “trash” than clothing.
Similar to the electronic waste issue.
All the 1st world countries sell off our rubbish to other countries to worry about and dispose of negligently.
    This would end that.
We need to manage our own waste, and stop pawning it off onto other countries.

That's a major problem in Africa. I watched a documentary on it and it was crazy. These importers have shipping containers full of clothes imported then auction them off by dumping a pile on the floor in the market place and resellers have to fight over the pile. It's crazy. The importer said the quality was getting worse and I feel a lot is because of "fast fashion" that makes cheap clothes that don't last. We then donate them to Goodwill and they end up in places like Africa and India.

I actually have 3 goodwill bins within an 1.5 hrs, only one of them within an hour of southwest michigan. It has been a life saver having these for sourcing in these winter months. Thrift stores have been ok but the cost of gas to travel them and only maybe finding something. Usually one item at the bins will pay for the whole shopping trip. That is even after everyone has picked over them because i dont like the initial lineup. They can get rough. Clothes are a pain so i usually stick to hard goods and plush. It is almost always worth the trip when you dont have better sourcing.

I have a Goodwill Bins about 15 min away. I work full time so am only able to go on weekends. We pay $1.25lb but it is usually very busy especially after noon and am only getting one or two treasures if I am lucky. Lots of $20-$30 items. My treasure last week was a Build A Bear large Psyduck that I sold for $125 on FB Marketplace. I am in Edmonton Alberta Canada. I find it hard selling on EBay out of Canada as the shipping is so expensive compared to the USA. Just started watching your videos and am really enjoying them so had to subscribe😊

Interesting take on 2nd hand goods being exported to other countries... problems both ways it seems. It's to me been an issue
of so many countries with low wages sending clothing and goods here to sell and higher cost, but still under US made items....
Plus Never 100 % knew why it kept growing rapidly other than greed !! 🤔😬 Thanks for the info.

She just loves you - maybe you if you read this you could shout out "Carol" lol She always says she can't craft or thrift etc I joke since then and tell her its AC Worthy (Auntie Carol) worthy - meaning she can do it =) LOL - I love your content! I love your history tidbits! I only have a few teachers that stood out the test of time for me and if I had you as a teacher you definitely would have been one of them =) Thank you for your continued knowledge! Much Appreciated =) PS I was trying to keep this short - but I had her thrifting one day a week and in no time climbing around in a horrifying attic at an estate sale LOL

It saved my store thrifting and brought all my purchases down to $2 per item the first time I went about 6 weeks ago. I went back 2 weeks ago on a Monday...and the inventory was trash. Hit and miss in my area. Northern NY. I've also been to the one in CT. If you have flea market or antique booth... it would definitely be more worth the 3 hour trip.

I have a Goodwill Outlet Store (The Bins) within an hour from me. Located in Tallahassee, Florida. My sister-in-law and I go together. She is the reseller. I am always on the look out for items for her to resale, while picking up items for myself, and my family. Our bins store varies. Some days we go and find all types of good items, other days, they do not rotate the bins as often and nothing much is found. It's fun to go, unless you run into some of the rude people, who are grabbing things. Try it Kevin, just keep in mind you will need a few hours to half of the day because they rotate the bins and you need to be there for that. Get Cary and Dawn to take you when you go to Vegas this year.

Kevin is one hundred percent right. Not only the interests of the big companies, this is also about the interests of the governments to get income through taxes - are at stake.
In Sweden and within the rest of the EU, there are constant restrictions on the second-hand market. The latest regulation came in January 2023, which means that on the larger platforms such as eBay and Tradera and so on, each individual seller can sell a maximum of 20 times and a maximum of SEK 20,000 (EUR 2,000) per year. Otherwise, this must be registered with the Tax Office of the respective country.

I'm not a reseller but enjoy thrifting. I hate shopping for new clothes so just wear the same old stuff I've had for years. Then every once in a while I'll get a new piece of clothing and some of it is labeled Made in Indonesia. On another note......I'm an artist and just went to an estate sale of a well known local artist. I was able to get lots of vintage art supplies and drawing and watercolor paper. I'm set now for probably a year. I wonder if the 3 big online art supply stores will care......don't tell them...tee hee. The prices at the art stores have soared along with shipping costs.

I hate it when companies claim the item you're selling is counterfeit knowing full well that is not! Nike is one of those companies that often claim sellers are selling counterfeit. So many came in that eBay had to do a authenticity guarantee! Soon every company will want to be on a Vero list!
