- Here is my review on the 1/2" and 3/8" fractional/SAE swivel impact sockets, I think the fractional sets are a better value because of their size range where the metric sets seem a bit short and they cut off too many sizes
1/2" SAE # I3US-14, 56731
3/8" SAE # I2US-12, 56695
Thank you for being faithful to honest reviews. I hope your channel grows and you get compensated for what you do. Again, thank you.
This is a gem of a channel. Im glad I stumbled upon your content. Subbed.
I always learn something from your reviews Catus. Thank you .
The HF executive has no clue how many tools I bought from them because of your reviews. Pretty much the cheapest made in Taiwan tools out there.
I was thinking the same thing, except not just HF. I'm surprised my wife hasn't blocked this channel on my RUclips account (if such a thing is possible). I buy more tools because of this channel than any other. Project Farm is a close second, and I mostly buy consumable items like glue, grease, and fasteners, because of him. I suspect the main reason they don't send him stuff is because he doesn't have enough subscribers, but the other reason is that they're not sure what he's going to say about anything.
I buy tools I don't even need because of his reviews!
HF is truely becoming a go to for value. I can see them going hard after the truck brands and ultimatly their demise especially with the way the econony is going. I wish they had this quality of tools when i started out in the late 90's.
Snap-On's current crop of ratchet wrenches, are junk based on my personal experience. The old versions, with the teardrop heads were great. I had to retire a couple years back and, since I grenaded several oval head Span Ons, my cheapy H-F ratchet wrenches saved my back loosening 13mm bolt heads and, did NOT strip out their gears. Note I was just just hand strength, NO cheaters nothing yet the H-F proved to be much more durable(!)
@@piercehawke8021I want some of the GLUE you two are huffing lol. HF isn’t even close to SNAP ON, MAC & MATCO. Sorry not sorry. Again where can I get some of that GLUE😂. Bet you work on lawn equipment. Thanks for the laugh…
I stand by what I stater re modern Snap-On ratchet wrenches; no huffing needed. And I too are.of Nordic heritage:)
@@nordicpride9708how much do you owe to the tool trucks
I really enjoy the reviews and unlike other channels out there are not shills , keep the good work
Izik Roitman yup, catus isn’t a shill which makes his reviews fantastic and rare
Idk man he really fanboying duralast
you are the only person in the world calling them fractional
Thanks for the awesome review you've noticed things most RUclips videos lack. I'm getting the icon swivels because damnit I'm not going to spend over $600 for the snap on. This is even because I really want to support USA made stuff because we're losing our manufacturing. If I could find USA for $300 I'd buy it but Icon being at $140 I cannot justify the cost difference because of the lack of daily need for many 1/2' drive swivels.
I have a metric and an SAE set of the NAPA ones. Likely the ones NAPA sold just prior to revealing the Carlyle line. While I appreciate the idea of swivel sockets, I have found that the extra bulk makes them far less useable than I had anticipated.
I have a whole set of vlcheck combination wrenches ,they are the best wrenches i ever had 3/8" to 11/4" i had 3 wrenchs locked together to loosen a 11/4 " bolt on a pipe flange that was in the elements for years in a oil refinery in pa.
I like the fact that you do not take free tool from harbor freight or any other tool company, it give your reviews vallity. Please don't change.
glad to see Harbor Freight continuing to expand their Icon offerings. However, they don't offer open stock of individual sizes. The collar is fairly thick which may affect access in tight engine bays. I think the new Astro pinless Impact swivel socket sets are a much better value at close to half the price of the Icon sets. I wouldn't get too hung up on the metric size options, it's the usable sizes contained that are more important than the number of sockets included that matters. 24 mm is pretty larger for a late model vehicle. thanks for sharing!!!
Mitsubishi differential filler plugs are 24 mm.
I got some snap on 3/8 shallow, very slim from pin welded and ground flush.
Loveem
Even late model Toyotas use 24mm plugs for manual gearboxes and for the transfer case fill and drain plugs. Some people are so annoyed with them that it's common to replace them with 10mm hex plugs which are used in the differentials.
Not sure if it's still helpful, but they offer individual stuff through the parts department, more expensive than the store price (ie 10 dollars a wrench v 8 dollars a wrench in a pack). Ask the store manager for the number and you can do that. Unfortunately you also get charged a shipping fee
Sunex 3/8 metric and sae master set is a great buy for impact sockets at 200 bucks comes with short and deep plus swivels.
Can you do a comparison with the gearwrench ones the 1/2 size on Amazon is 111 for 15pc
My experience. HF is good, but not great. I bought a set and they have a sloppy fit. Some of the bolts on Toyota air intake were getting rounded. 12mm. I upgraded to the Snap On 212IPFM and it's a world a difference. They grip the bolt better, no slipping and no play. I'm not sure if my HF set was broached or not, but they didn't fit right. If you can get the snap on do it. Again the HF was good, but not great. Good review. I was hoping for a better experience.
Hey what is your hand finger skin condition called? I have it too but just on one of my index finger. Doctor didn't really help. Gave me multiple cream. Flakes different time of weeks. I was considering metric for my home mechanic work. Wasn't sure yet
I got a sae and metric set of these myself. Seem pretty decent for the money, though I haven’t used them long enough to see how they hold up.
Two years later, may I ask how they're doing for you this time around?
Some of the more common sizes have witness marks and signs of use but none have broken. I’d still recommend.
Interesting fact about ww2 , good video! 👍🏼
I have the 15piece 1/2in drive gearwrench metric set sizes (10mm-24mm) and they're awesome for +/- $100
I really want to recommend the AKM TOOL Impact Swivel Sockets 3/8". It comes with 20 pieces, along with adapters and extension bars. The cost performance is excellent.
Running impacts are important on an impact gun because they are softer and won’t crack like your chromes. Easier on your impact anvil. If you use a chrome in an impact over head you will have chrome flakes landing in your eyes
I agree HF sockets set always seems to be missing important sizes so I don't buy their sockets.
I can tell you use brake cleaner to clean you hands! You are my hero!
Thanks 👍
I started going to harbor freight more often for tools I need as a lube technician but looking to get more tools for side mechanic work
Had great results with Sunex an GP impacts. Harbor Freight pricing has become a bit too expensive.
You can still buy all their cheap stuff. This didn’t replace anything.
0m no
A set of icon deep 1/2 metric is 47 dollars.. that’s cheap.
Yeah SUNEX is WAAAAAAY better. No comparison
Do you happen to know of any other impact swivels like the Snappy's that doesn't have the collar on the drive portion, but still uses the pin? I much prefer the pin design swivels but I don't really like that clunky collar, some brands are huge, while others are more narrow.
I love the videos, I can't tell you the number of tools I have bought after seeing the interesting things you find out there.
I know Mac Tools used to make pin Drive swivels were they have no collar
I bought the sae set had it for 3 weeks & broke the 1 1/8 & took it back for warranty which was quick & easy but I've had sunex & broke it to in same way but so far the capri brand is unbreakable & have not worn the sunex would always bind up then eventually break but capri so far after 7 months still no binding
I have always liked Icon. Another brand I really like too and is a little cheaper is Tekton.
No swivels tho
These have a super coupon this weekend. For Memorial day.
I bought this icon 3/8 swivel metric set, and have a few dewalt 3/8 impact wrenches, and the icon swivel sockets wouldn’t stay on the anvil. Ended up returning them, even though I’ve had great luck with my other icon purchases. Any one else have this problem? One of my impact wrenches was brand new, same 12v xtreme one in the video.
probably the gun. they fit perfect on my snap-on and mac guns...they’re still a cheap socket, they don’t fit as well as my real swivels off the truck but still aren’t horrible.
You can get 1/2 sae set from grey pneumatic for $150
I haven't looked at HF sockets lately as I don't need any. But while generally HF represents decent value for those who need that, the most annoying thing is the skips and/or shorts in HF's various sets, not just Icon.
I use a university swivel adapter because I feel like I generally need a deep socket
I agree with you on the swivel thing.
I like the idea of the swivel socket, but I have enough tools (including impact rated sockets) that I just can't justify investing in another whole set.
Not trying to hate. But my 1/2” setup starts at 15mm. Why would you need that much torque for anything smaller. Now my 3/8” sockets stop at 19mm so it overlaps. But anything smaller than 15mm in 1/2” is overkill.
im torn between getting the icon or the sunex brand swivel sockets.
I'm leaning toward Icon because it's easier to walk into a HF store and swap out; and a swivel seems like an easy to break socket.
This sold out soon as they hit the shelves at my store. I hope they get them icon double box end ratcheting wrenches in an the knipex clone Doyle water pump pliers in at my store asap
Better off buying the real tools
just got the Dewalt 3/8 Metric impact swivel socket set at Home Depot. For $26.59 ships to my door I think it is invincible
Are these pinless design like the old Matco and new GearWrench sets?
No they are classic
@@CatusMaximus can I ask, would pinless be a deal breaker and why?
My next and final socket set,
As acting chief financial officer,
The Icon tool's that are( only $99.99+ and more,) is a safer quality choice for the pro's.
Buy only the 99.99 and up icons tools only. .
And whatever you icon tool thats not $99.99, just buy it off the napa Carlyle tool wall, at napa.
Now that's a tool box right there.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
A BIG problem with Harbor Freight sockets and wrenches is that if you lose one,
YOU CANNOT BUY INDIVIDUAL REPLACEMENTS, THAT SUCKS !
Did harbor freight send you these?
I mentioned in the video I have never received anything from Harbor Freight except for an email criticizing one of my videos
@@CatusMaximus I must of skipped over that part, appreciate your integrity.
The question is is hf going to cheapen pittsburgh in order to sway people to buy icon
If you need something grab it now. The quality goes downhill in general. I bought some SAE Craftsman wrenches, Kobalt socket set, Vise Grips good 15 years ago. All these tools were made in the USA. Tools sold at Walmart are going downhill and Lowes or Home Depot follows that trend. I think that the Pittsburgh brand will be made in China/India entirely.
@@gnawrot Speaking of Vise Grip...Malco bought the Paterson Vise Grip plant in DeWitt. They are releasing their USA made "Eagle Grip" locking pliers in the upcoming months. Very excited
IMHO you should have listed all the sizes of the sockets on your listing
both fractional and metric, otherwise a great review.
I just got this icon set in metric, I've used it a couple of times and don't like it, the reason is, the they don't maintain the angle position completely during rotation, they have a " jump" . Not all the sockets but most of them did, I was removing my exhaust muffler had the socket on an angle and when I press the trigger on my impact gun the dam thing went out of round so bad it literally jumps of the nut this was with the 14mm one, I notice 19mm doesn't do this it keeps turning smooth even on an angle, and we'll the other brand sockets in the shop don't have this problem at all they all run firm on an angle but are 4 times the price
I ended returning them u.u I was excited for them what a shame
With more and more tool companies putting out with comparable tools to Snap on, Mac, Matco how are they going to survive. Possibly another big 3 auto maker happening here.
I never understood the need for a swivel socket when you can just use a universal joint socket with your regular sockets.
Main reason is these are CV joint style and tmdo not bind like regular swivel
Also the overall length is shorter on the swivel sockets vs socket + u joint in my experience. And it’s a lot less floppy when your deep in.
Less binding but I get where you’re coming from
Lol try and remove the outer head bolts on a 5.3 ls engine in a trailblazer with out a 15m swivel.. without taking the headers completely out.
Good info everyone...thanks.
Not had any luck with icon. I'm a repair shop owner and wanted to see what all the buzz was. I'll stick with gp, gearwrench and some snapon. I've broke 2 wrenches and 3 sockets had been beaten pretty bad.
How is waiting for the coupon annoying? I’m surprised you shop at harbor Freight and don’t know about the site. HFQPDB.com type in the item number and see if there is a coupon, also the percent coupons are on there too.
Blzurd use this 20% Coupon number for icon -18452353 I don’t know if you can use it in other state
Everything Icon is 20% off
@@gabrielmerza6904 I work at harbor freight. I get everything for 20% off ontop of coupons
Home Depot has x core pinless for 59.99
Icon chrome finish is trash I bought a set to test out and the finish is already coming off 3 weeks old....
can you remove kug nuts with these lol?
Hf is turning there game up but they charge a lot for tax
I prefer ASTRO PINLESS UNIVERSAL IMPACT SOCKETS. 3/8" $60
ASTRO MAKES MATCO
Do you have leprosy?
Let us know how those work for you after a month of daily use or a couple months of normal use. Those won’t last.
Sunex blows them out of the water
How can you call this a review if those sockets look like they've never been used.
vicv 1 same way you can review a movie after watching it one time.
Watch this video over and over then make a review video of a review video
Pretty straight forward review of fitment and size. Personally, I'd like to see more videos of that nature on socket brands. If you want to watch some just demo the sockets all day, I'm sure a mechanic will eventually put up a video.
@@Mark-sn6kh reviewing a film and reviewing a socket set or other tool are two very different things.
Icon sockets are not my first pick for a professional or even weekend use set. You are way better off spending more for better more complete sets or less for more value weekend use sets.
Who tf needs a 7mm impact?
You have a fungal infection on your hands
Molybdenum. Please pronounce it properly
