What are these on the trees?

We are here at Stony Creek and many times I have looked up in the trees and I see these man made objects that are attached to the sides , and there are a lot of them, and I have always wondered, what are these? Does anybody know about these? I'm so curious

Could be that there was cabling in the trees, and those blocks protects the trees against damage
