Coming To America - Ensemble Staging

- “This scene is from Coming to America, a comedy by Eddie Murphy of the African Prince Akim of the fictitious country of Zamunda, Here we see the late Ralph Bellamy, and Don Ameche, interacting with Akim (Eddie Murphy) and Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) interacting with the actors, through a window of a restaurant. The scene is particularly funny as Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy were in the earlier film Trading Places in which another character by Eddie Murphy ruined them and Akim’s “pocket change” here restored them."

You really have to wonder if audiences who saw this back in 1988 understood that Coming to America and Trading Places took place in the same cinematic universe.
That's nearly 2 x 20 years in the can ago.
Yes they did. I saw this in the eighties as a child and straight away saw the connection. It was brilliant.
Saw this in the theaters on opening night with a packed house and this scene had everyone applauding and going nuts.
we all did it was funny
Yup, In the audience you heard people whispering, “trading places”
Probably one of the top 5 greatest movie cameos of all time
Top 5 Easter eggs
The audience cheared loudly at this part...brilliant cameo
One of the most creative scenes in movie history, you have to had followed Eddie's career to understand the connection. No one liners, no obvious shows, just subtle.
😎
Randolph said they were back......still waiting for Trading Places 2
@@kubikiribasara3499 me too, although they could be dead by now! And Winthorpe isn't young anymore himself! This was in '92? But then again, there's nothing wrong with changing the characters.
@KuBiKiRi BaSaRa 😬 they both died shortly after this film, it says Ralph Bellamy, died in '91! Which must mean this movie came out in '90.
Man I'm old!
Truly a meteoric rise. He was already a star when “Trading Places” came out, but almost exactly five years later, when “Coming to America” was released, he ruled the world.
I'd suggest they use that money to buy some pork belly commodities, as pork bellies are used to make bacon - which you might find in a bacon and lettuce and tomato sandwich.
😐
Ha ha ha
Maybe give the frozen orange juice a miss this time...
I hear Blue Oyster likes Blue Star
And there goes the 4th wall.
Fun fact: People still call 123 South Broad Street as the “Duke & Duke” building in Philadelphia
I do like the fact that Mortimer could've left Randolph as soon as he got the money. Instead he informed his brother of great news that benefits the both of them
I think that, what it was, is that Mortimer Duke cursed his own Brother, when their Empire came crashing down, in the Movie "Trading Places". Randolph Duke, although still with his Brother, still hadn't forgiven him for that. But:They were still together, so.....
Suddenly, they found themselves with a chance to re-start their lives.
Hopefully, they used that Money wisely. This could've been...
Their last chance!
@@ronaldshank7589 Hey, I'm a bit late on this but if you watch "Coming *2* America" that sequel can answer your question.
@@ronaldshank7589i think they could of started back up a small trading penny stocks companies a realistic income of $10 million dollars a year and after taxes split everything evenly
Probably the best movie in-joke in the history of cinema.
Crossover too now I understood why my parents made me watch Trading Places first on purpose. In the theaters they told me they got a standing ovation
You have to see "Trading Places" to understand this joke .
I hadn't seen the movie when I first saw Coming to America, and still thought it was funny. Just saw it as two homeless guys being over the moon about getting a lot of money.
Now that I've actually seen Trading Places, that just makes it even better. lol
@@raspymorten yehey !!!
Would have top it off if Randolph and mortimer went to akeem and tipped him "ONE DOLLAR"
Yup I guess they learn their lesson 😂😂
The Dukes are back, funny Trading Places reference
"Mortimer...we're back."
"Yeah!"
Two of the best cameos I’ve ever seen in a movie. Made me feel warm and fuzzy. 👍❤️
😂 i love eddie murphy for thinking of doing this!
Same director on both films too….John Landis
I wonder was this his idea or that of the director 😂
This movie is perfect! I wouldn’t add or delete anything. A true masterpiece!
They really did learn their lesson and got back on their feet, if you watch Coming to America 2 they paid homage to them on the job interview scene with Hakeem son
Oh! 😲 I really want to see coming to America 2 now.
I think the deeper message behind this (accidental or not) is everyone's life is intertwined.
@popoff21: They got back on their feet yes, but whether they learned their lesson...who can say.
I'd love to see how Winthrop and Valentine reacted to them coming back to Wall Street.
Well... They were wealthy again... So they probably did learn their Lesson.
I knew it! I remember seeing this and I'm like, "Where have I seen these guys before?"
Totally unexpected and probably the best cameo I've seen. Whoever came up with this idea is a genius.
Great nod to and homage. Class act Eddie.
Only people who have watched trading place can understand this scene
I saw this in the theater. Everyone in there cheered and/or laughed when we realized that it's the Duke Brothers
While Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) and Louis Winthorpe (Dan Ackroyd) bankrupted the Dukes, Prince Akeem Joffer from Zamunda (also Eddie Murphy) brought the Dukes back on top.
Randoph : I'm still not talking to you ! ( Mortimer You're brother isn't well We better call him a ambulance ) Fuck Him! turn those machines back on!
...and Randolph never forgot that very callous, hateful remark, that had been directed straight at him, when he was at his lowest, having a Heart Attack, and facing what could've been his possible death! He found out, in that moment, that his own Brother, even if only for a moment, thought only about himself!
Something like that is hard to forgive, and forget. It does a lot of damage!
Un Prince à New York = Le moment où Eddie Murphy est devenu une vraie Légende du cinéma ! A KING !!!!!!!!!!!
Great scene having the Duke Brothers get back in business again!
At least they were smart enough not to get revenge on Winthorpe and Valentine
@@pottytheparrot310 Since the movie Trading Places in 1983
I like that Randolph and Mortimer said thank you
Eddie Murphy into the murphyverse, Eddie Murphy and the murphyverse of madmurphyness, everyeddiething everymurphywere all at Eddie Murphy once!
I had seen Trading Places way before this movie hit theaters. I don't know why I didn't catch the joke when I saw it in the theater, but I caught it when I rented this movie.
lol...loved those two movies, when hollywood was great in the 80s
“Let’s have launch” 💥
I died at that moment when I first watched the movie 😂😂😂😂😂
Little does she know, it was Akeem who took all that money from Randolph and Mortimer. 😳
Excuse me?
Please explain that...
@@ronaldshank7589 Akeem's former name was Valentine 🤑
The real cinemátic universe
The Duke Brothers are back in business..
Thanks Prince Akeem ❤
I saw this movie first, so this scene went right over my head. Then once I saw Trading Spaces, this scene made a lot more sense.
Best scene ever ❤
It's a shame a Trading Places 2 never happened, this was the best tease for it.
0:35 - wide background shot of the World Trade Centre, where the trading floor scene in Trading Places is set. (Murphy and Ackroyd are shown arriving there in a taxi.)
It's a cross over to Trading Places. Same Director.
I still can't believe those two are still alive! They were old then!
Poor Dukes. They might been bad, but nobody deservs to live like that. :(
Nobody should you're right but I think in this case they did deserve it because of of what they did to widthorpe they dragged him to hell they didn't care if he had died in the street they used him just for a dollar bet.
@@User2100 Maybe, I am torn.
I understand your position, but take note of their greed and selfishness. They needed to be humbled.
@@srami004 I don't disagree on that they needed to be humbled. I am torn on the result of them having to live on the street.
I like to think they’ll have learned from the experience and be better this time around.
1:07-1:10 now, I realize that it’s the Duke brothers from trading places.
They even made cameo in latest coming 2 America movie too.
I was surprised to see them rich again but now it explain everything.
Akeem: Elemental
Lisa: Other Countries
Duke Brothers: Disney and Pixar
“Look!” ❤
Now very experienced and skilled traders like the Duke brothers will in time turn that few thousand dollars into a few million dollars in a couple of years easily..👍😙👍
Gotta figure even in 80's dollars there was probably six figures in that package
@@Heretic1981 oooh ya. I do agree.
Well they better hurry, Father Time is on their asses
In the sequel, his nephew confirmed they did indeed become millionares again
Dear god, no no no no no 😭
The cinematic universe we need.
Hopefully they aren't as bad as before. I always liked this scene Eddie Murphy is the man
Mortimer, we're back!
Of course they still owe 360 million from trading places
The Duke houses paintings and land might of covered it?
@@jamesdurnford1221 Cause in the sequel it seems Duke And Duke lives on
That was covered by the asset seizure. Any shortfall has long since been written off.
Ohhhhhhh snap! The Duke Brothers are back!
When I first saw this scene i was like are Trading Places and Coming to America connected in some kind of way.
It's the bee's knees.
Why is Randolph the one giving Mortimer the silent treatment? Wasn’t he the one who came up with the one dollar bet and lost them all their money to Winthorpe and Valentine?
Think of the last scene in Trading Places
* Randolph falls to the floor clutching his chest *
Exchange Comissioner: "Mortimer, your brother doesn't seem well, we should get him a doctor."
Mortimer Duke: "FUCK HIM!!"
Randolph’s probably had to deal with years of Mortimer complaining and being short with him for what he did
Near the end of "Trading Places",when Randolph was having a heart attack,Mortimar ignored, and used the F Word him.
Must of had brilliant minds to know what to do with that money. Most people would blow it
I just realized that the old guy who plays Randolph Duke is also Mr. Morris in Pretty Woman. Man's career was built on playing rich dudes who (almost) lose their companies.
Turn those machines back on
" Half of it is from me"
AFTER 6 LONG YEARS MORTIMER AND RANDOLPH ARE BACK DUKE& DUKE BACK ON TOP
wait a second , arent this the same characters that lost all of their money in wall street in another movie ? 0:50
I still find it unsettling that the Duke brothers got blessed with that money after the way they talked about Valentine and tried to ruin Winthorpe’s life over a dollar. But an awesome cameo and crossover nonetheless.
Randolph: Were back
Now where the hell is Clarence Beeks?
People ask "Where the hell is Clarence Beeks?" and "Who the hell is Clarence Beeks?", but not "How the hell is Clarence Beeks?" Judging from how we last saw him, he's going through the tortures of the damned.
He's probably in the jungle getting boned by an ape
With any luck, "enjoying" some Hot Monkey Love
Thank you Lord. Thank you Robby ;)
Nice 🎉
It was only right for Eddie Murphy to get them back on their feet. They messed around in trading places but, Eddie has a heart.
I think they learned their lesson.
Way back years ago, I was once asked about the best cameos for a comedy and dramatic film. My answers were the above scene-obviously-and James Caan's appearance at the end of the second Godfather.
RIP
Don Ameche, and Ralph Bellamy
They Bought Bitcoin at .005
Mortimer looks so much older a few years later. Randolph looks about the same age
he gets rent money
My head canon: Trading Places and Coming to America are in the same timeline
0:42 LOL! Boy oh Boy... Money. Money. Money. I'm 56, I finally know how to really manage it and all I'm going to do is get older.
It was like Eddie felt bad for what he did to the Duke brothers in Trading Places. He gave them some money.
The prince restored the dukes status
I saw coming to America 1st before trading places, couldn't figure out what was the scene was about, until now.
The werewolf a few John Landis films ago clearly murdered the wrong homeless people 😂
Is this the birth of the EMCU? The Eddie Murphy Cinematic Universe
You can do that when your a prince and a Rothschild
Guess getting that money got the racism out of the Duke Brothers too lol
I'm the prize
❤
I just found out just a few weeks ago that the two bums on here are the same two from the movie trading places lol
Original is much better than the sequel.
I can not find one flaw in C2A 1!
Okay I don't know if this is Mandela effect or what but I distinctly remember Randolph saying "Mortimer we're back in business!" Instead of just saying we're back.
I'd bet you a dollar that it's always been, "Mortimer, we're back!" 😉
Me too! I even searched for this with “Mortimer”
soi funny man
Duke et duke are back
I don’t know what happen to the 2nd part but it was ok
1:04 when payday hits
Hopefully, they learned their lesson.
I they didn't learn too much. They'd probably not be nearly as funny.
Pay back time.
Good Friend He was..He could have kept the money to himself
They were brothers.
I don't think giving those two money is a good idea 😬
they'll just waist it all on pork bellies
I hope they don't invest in orange juice futures.
Let's have lunch
I say that all the time.
Look at that Es Car Go!
What is this movie before or after trading places?
Obviously after..
Hopefully they were nicer to people now, their nephew certainly wasn’t in the sequel😂
NY governor😂😂😂
Who is Randolph and Mortimer
Honestly, i always thought that The Dukes started off in the poor house and Akim’s “pocket change” here restored them only in Trading Places put them back in the poor house.
You must have seen this 1st right? I thought Billy (Eddie's name in trading places) became Akeem and wanted to do right, mind you I was only 5, so hadn't grasped the concept of acting. Only later did I understand that Billy and Akeem are 2 entirely separate characters.
@@Tee-Dot-Tv I get it but, to be honest, I think the duke brothers still deserve to be in the poor house after what they did to Winthorpe and Valentine over a $1 bet. I wonder how many other loyal, hardworking employees they similarly ruined besides Winthorpe?
@Vitold Wisniewski oh definitely, they were old men, 70, 80? They had at least done it, or something similar, in the past.
I'm a very GOD fearing man, and know this wasn't their first time. Actually, didn't they say "the usual $1 is what I owe you?" Or something like that? In the bathroom.
@@Tee-Dot-Tv Maybe but still In my personal opinion, if the Dukes had simply mentioned the bet, Valentine would have let bygones be bygones and let them off while helping Winthorpe get his fortune back.
He probably would have been like, “Let’s leave them be, they’re old men, and, while you didn’t like what happened to you, you got to see what went on in my life and you can appreciate what you had more genuinely.” Or something along those lines. This likely would have calmed Winthorpe enough to recognize that he was right.
But the moment they used that racial slur for Valentine and refused to take back Winthrope, all bets were off and Valentine decided to help Winthrope take them down.
@Vitold Wisniewski yeah, but then we wouldn't have a movie 😅! One thing my brother said to me is "they want them to do that" almost everything on screen or in front of an audience has been rehearsed and made up.
I used to shit myself (figuratively) when I watched horror films, but after he said that I was like its all a farce! Don't get me wrong I still enjoy the work they do, but I always remember it's scripted and rehearsed.
So I'm sure that option came up, but we wouldn't have the outstanding movie trading places.
I wish I knew the name of the music in 0:34
