this always annoyed me, along with the fact netflix has both naruto sub and dub, but for the longest time it was incomplete- has almost all of the movies including the shippuden ones, but excluding The Last, and the shippuden series itself for some reason - and Hulu has all of naruto and naruto shippuden, but not all of the dub for shippuden - they had to be high when they licensed the series, and there’s probably more weird inconsistencies on other services

the company Kaze was the biggest licensor here in Germany, they even had their own streaming service called Anime on Demand. Now Crunchyroll bought Kaze and shut down AOD and there are a lot of shows still missing on Crunchyroll that used to be on AOD.

    Two corrections:
Viz used to be owned exclusively by Shogakukan, but in the early 2000s, they switched to being owned by a holding company that includes Shogakukan and Shueisha. They are not (or at least weren't when I kept track) exclusively owned by Shueisha.
Also the streaming services will own the license for streaming, but they don't necessarily sub-license to the ones who make the hard media (BD/DVD/etc) versions of the show. A company that makes hard media can license directly from the Japanese production committee. The only question is will they license the translation from the streaming company or just have it retranslated?

Just adding more information for Asia region licensing:
Licensing in Asia (outside Japan and Middle East) are usually bought by single company that doesn't even have streaming service, like IMMG, Ani-One, Aniplus, or Muse Communication.
They often sublicensing their IP to several streaming service, that's why a single anime often available for five different streaming services.
English Asia release often to be the most close 1:1 translation, while local languages (like Indonesian, Chinese, or Thai) might have slighly have more freedom in their translation to match local culture.
English Asia being 1:1 translation is because there's no way to cater to single cultural reference, as area served can have thousands of cultures, ethnics, religions, and contradicting rule of laws. So they play safe and release things without censorship at all.
Company like Muse Communication and Ani-One even have RUclips channel to streaming anime either for free to paid-subscription only, which not every committee production doesn't always want to have certain anime to be streamed on RUclips.
There are unique case where Muse Asia license Tokyo Revengers and the committee production demands the swastika to be censored. Muse Asia argue that swastika has neutral (or even positive) meaning in SEA, Taiwan, and South Asia, so the censorship is not needed.
Shogakukan have Shogakukan Asia (based in Singapore) which license their own title (and some other publisher) in English for English Asia release.

why dont animation studios ask for a royalty instead of a straight contract. that way the anime gets made on a budget, but if the studio does a great job and make it look good, they can also reap the rewards by getting more money to pay the artists. that way we get good quality with no compromises.
