  • Tips for Travelers has released the latest list of cruise RUclips channels and well it isn't looking good for La Lido Loca. In this episode I breakdown the list and talk about the mental challenges of being competitive and being a content creator.
Here the link to Gary's article with links to the channels:

Please watch through the whole video. I'm good and I feel like I balance the mental challenges well, but wanted to give some insight on how comparing, being competitive and trying to live as a creative can mess with your mind some! Here is the link to Gary's list with the channel links -

So here’s the deal Tony. Of all the cruise channels out there, how many didn’t make the list? Of those that made the list, you’re #3 in all of RUclips. Of the 175 on Gary’s list…you are in the top 2%. Bottom line is if you are happy, if you BELIEVE in where you’re headed with the channel and if you stay real, you should be able to sleep well at night. You have developed a following because of your genuine style and sense of humor. As I’ve mentioned before I’m an old radio guy and this is how we felt when the ratings came out every 3 months. I lasted 25 years in one place by pretty much just being me. Look, I came across your channel 6 months ago and look forward to every update ‘cause I feel like your someone I’d like to have. beer with. (Not in that creepy stalker kinda way,) Move forward, keep true to you and you will continue to kill it. Oh by the way, on a regular basis I watch you, Don & Emma. I check out some of the others now and then but Not much.

Thanks for discussing and sharing your thoughts. Really interesting.,What’s exciting, as you say, is the number of people making cruise content and the numbers are growing all the time. And more and more are watching and subscribing. What you do is unique and stands out. And all the more subscribed to today are very different to each other - and (as you rightly say) also have to keep experimenting and evolving! And we all have to keep doing that. 18 months ago the 10 must subscribed to were quite different. But doing oneself is key. And you are you and I love your channel and content!

We started watching cruise channels at the beginning of 2020 with Ben and David. Then Don, Tony and Jenny, Emma and Illana. Each channel has its own unique atraction from ship tours, food review, ship news and ship sailaways. Overall we have found Tony to be our number one person for ship news. His presentation , humor and knowledge of the subject he's talking about is unparalleled. Everyday we check out our cruisers, Tony being first to check on. As of today we don't see any room for change in your presentations we love them the way they are. Great job Tony, can't wait for your next posting.

I think Gary has been doing this longer and he covers a larger cruise geographic. He covers the Mediterranean, Asia, river and transatlantic cruises so he has a bigger audience. The more diversified you become and the longer your vlogging the more successful you 'll be. We love all the quirks of your show. Keep it up.

And dont get me wrong, I like Gary and watch his vlogs, but I dont think he speaks to the average cruiser. He likes more of the luxury cruise lines and cabins. And that's where I go if I need to see a review of one of those. But he's said himself (I believe - forgive me if I'm wrong) we're not gonna see him on Carnival. It' s just not the cruise environment he enjoys. One reason I love so many of the other vloggers!

Tony, I am a die-hard cruiser and I love to talk cruising with everyone I know. I occasionally watch content from other creators, like EECC, Don, Emma, etc. But you are my favorite, for sure. Every morning I watch Doug Parker's 2 1/2 minute Cruise Radio piece and, at some point during the day, I watch whatever it is that YOU created. I find you to be very relatable, since we are the same age and are both empty-nesters. Everything you create seems genuine, like the Tony that we are seeing on your channel is the same Tony we would know if we lived next door. Keep doing that thing you do everyday. Me and "my face" look forward to enjoying whatever you and your awesome mind have put together for the day. Thanks for everything you do!

You are our number one go to watch( we even booked our next cruise with team Jenny). Don is second ( even though he is long winded). Matt on very rare occasions. There are a few others I have watched for a specific topic like food reviews or crew reports, but it usually stays with you three on a daily basis. You and Don are the only ones we subscribe to. Thanks for being funny, interesting and to the point on a day in day out work schedule. I think it’s an honour to be on this adventure with so many amazing creators, that’s what makes it fun! I try to think of RUclips like we’re all on a lazy river… sometimes somebody does something cool, or goes faster, or gets stuck behind a tree, we might shout GO TONY WOOHOO or help somebody if they’re stuck but that’s not the point it’s just a fun adventure together. It’s not a race or a competition. 💦🌊

You're 3rd in a RUclips space with over 150 competitors. Not too shabby! You should be very proud of yourself. Of the two channels that are above you, I honestly have never heard of Number 1. I do watch Matt's Royal Caribbean Blog, mostly because we've cruised almost exclusively on Royal, so we like the content. But honestly (here's the virtual hug!) I watch your show every day. I think you're funny as hell, and find myself laughing out loud as I watch. To me, your best videos are when you seem to be over-caffinated (not that I'm recommending that you do that 😀) and bouncing off the virtual walls. Keep plugging away! It seems like you have another K subscribers every time I check. You'll be at 18M before you know it. It'll be you, PewDiePie, Mark Rober, and Mr. Beast!

Hey Tony. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this topic. You, along with Emma, Don, Gary and many others are content creators that I look up to. You've established yourself as one of the most influential cruise influencers and vloggers on the planet and that is inspiring to other content creators such as myself. I think though, you hit the nail on the head when you said that you're the most successful and satisfied you've ever been - I reckon that feeling is really the *ultimate goal*.
I've been working at this for a few years and see I'm at number 75 on Gary's list - I haven't made the top 50 and I'm good with that. I share Don's sentiments, and although I keep track of what others are doing, I really focus on continuing my own journey in content creation. I think mostly about my audience and what they want to see, and what I want to share with them. That seems to work for me, it keeps me zoned into my viewers and I value the loyalty and real relationships that I've been able to build with my audience. It really means the world to me, to think that people are interested in what I have to say, and what I have to share, about one of my favourite things in the world - cruising.
I would one day love to get to your level of success within this niche of content creation. I don't think the videos I create are less-than, or better-than the videos I see others produce, but I'm proud to call them mine.
I appreciate that you, as someone who to me is on top of their game, also has moments of introspection about your place in all of it - it helps me to know that, actually. So thank you for sharing and keep on keeping on!

I watch a few others but these four and of course you, offer great commentary, humor and cruising inspiration. When you and Jenny moved to Florida to pursue this career and the pandemic hit, you pivoted your channel and bought viewers great cruise news. I am excited to see what you do in the future as the seascape changes.

At the end of the day, all of you bring something to the table and something unique to your channels. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing what's on your mind about these lists. I'm a naturally competitive person so if I were to my peers all listed out in order, then it would give me the competitive itch, too

I watch a few people on this list, but when something happens in the cruise space and I see it pop up in my news feed, I always think to myself "I wait and see Tony's take on this". Case in point, I was kinda bummed about Carnivals Bluetooth speaker change because I listen to soft music in our cabin. Tony did an expose of the changes in a parody. I loved it. He lightheartedly made it obvious that life is change and often others ruin things for the rest of us.

I even have one your postcards from the Bahamas. You've come a long way. The pandemic and cruise shutdown must've initially looked like the end of your channel, but instead it grew because you provided the latest news on when cruising was coming back, all the new rules, and providing information on cancelled cruises. Your channel is great. Keep experimenting.

I didn’t realize that there were so many creators. I’ve watched a number of the content creators over the last few years, and while I have seen the videos of most the creators in the top ten and have pared it down to about four that I subscribe to. It’s important to realize that it is not just the content that is important but the experience as well. You are an entertainer as well as a provider of information and I think that people want to be entertained as well as informed and you provide a good balance of both. I think trying to improve everyday is an admirable goal and being a long term subscriber I see the growth and improvement all the time. There are four vloggers I will not miss a video from. I am a Patreon for three. Who and why……Gary because for the most part he covers travel on the ships I sail on. Oceania being my main go to and I also really like him. You because you are so informative on a daily basis, entertaining and I really love you and Jenny. Ben and David….. I adore both of them and their content plus Bens photographic ability is amazing. I also try to never miss anything that Morgan from Morgan’s Very UnOfficial Travel guide puts out. Once again, I love him and he is personable informative and actually answers posts from followers who have questions.
I know that is more than a full time job for content creators but I do believe it adds a personal touch that is lacking with many vloggers.
I pray that Jenny and her sister are doing OK. Loss is so terribly difficult and sudden loss even more so ❤️

I think that after COVID many people realized that they really wanted to travel, so the industry has increased a lot with “new travelers”. As a new travel you look for content that maybe it’s not so fun, but has a lot of information. Last year I took my first cruise, that’s how I started to follow you, but I continue to do so for fun, because love your videos, even though I am not planning a cruise soon. But what got me here was your first videos, because I didn’t know anything about cruising and they have a lot of info.

Gary is probably my favorite of the lot. Classy, unassuming, brilliant, personable. Excellent information on money saving tips. Honest reviews. Excellent selection of cruises and ships.
Travel With Us is excellent in choice of ships and cruises. Love their humor.
Both Gary and Richard have very soothing voices.
Don? What can I say? He’s freaking Don!!! Had the pleasure of sailing with him a few months ago. Just as wonderful in person as he is on these phone and computer thingamajigs.
Tony, I lost count of how many times you used the words “I” “me” “mine” etc. on this one. I realize ego is necessary as a presenter, but dude, seriously…focus more on cruising and not Tonying (I could say the same for Jay at Shiplife).
I’m sure many are disagreeing with the above. Cool. I look for cruise info and quality opinions. Over-the-top personality draws away from that.
Finally, (full disclosure), I’m jealous / envious of all of you. Cruising almost continually and making a living at it must be wonderful. My 0-4 cruises a year is the best I can manage.
    Safe travels. Be well.

I've watched several of these once or twice, but the ones I watch fairly regularly are you, Don, Ilana (Life well cruised), Lucy (Cruising as Crew), and sometimes Gary and Emma. Reality, I watched a lot of Gary's stuff, but he hasn't had anything really new and interesting lately. He's very factual and has some good insights on things like how to choose a line or why something may be good for some people but not others. Also, he has experience on lines that I haven't cruised. I'm not loyal to Royal...those were interesting when that person cruised other lines, but even then, he was unhappy because he wasn't getting the perks that he gets on Royal. He's top 10 because he specializes in Royal and there are a zillion Royal ships and passengers. Lucy has a lot of insights on Virgin as that's where she works most recently; she has a lot of good info about cruising in general. She also has fun facts about crew, both on Virgin and on her previous lines. Emma is sweet, but a little young and a very different point of view than I have. Ilana has good things to say about packing and cruising in general, but also too much merching (buy my cruise guide, look at all my Amazon links). To answer your specific questions, I've watched 8 of the top 10, and 16 of the total list. I like your level of intelligence, the fact that you provide current info (cruise news), and that you aren't selling...although we know that Jenny B is an agent. You show your merch, but you don't push it. You have a good blend of "the ship I'm on now" as well as "what's happening in cruising in general," and we know that you put something up almost every day so we look for you. Shiplife turned me off when I found that he has 3 different channels and he was writing continuously about quitting his job with Virgin before he ever got on a ship, then taking a cruise on them and griping about his lost luggage and that the cruise line didn't do enough for him. He came across like a spoiled kid, and couldn't seem to understand that the problem was that the porters never got his bag onto the ship..so it really wasn't the fault of the cruise line. And I was laughing because why do you need to check luggage for a 4 night cruise. This played out in a series of about 10 videos. Bed and David are funny but not a regular watch for me as they did too much of the "our room tour on," "Our first day on..." and it wasn't different enough for me to learn anything. I watched Don regularly for a while, but I quit when there was too much covid drama, then "am I moving" drama and "how my flights got messed up" drama. I wasn't learning anything from his adventures (a good learning point would have been something like "what you can do if your flights are messed up" or "what the airline legally owes you if...")
If I had to summarize why I watch someone, I need to learn something I want to know...either about cruising in general, a particular ship or line, or up to date news in cruising, and the more intelligently it can be presented, the better. Learning a little about the presenter is fine, particularly as it relates to cruising. But for me, the focus needs to be on the cruising, not the person.
I looked at a lot of videos when we were getting ready to start cruising again after the pandemic and the cancer, but I feel like I've basically "caught up" with them now. I've also watched a lot on the line and specific ship we had chosen for 2022, but I feel like I'm ready for our next cruise. Specific cruise line related, people would need to give me something other than a room tour, a ship tour, or a food/entertainment tour. I'd look for something different--a different port, a ship I'm interested in changed their entertainment, etc. I don't need/want the 100th "here is my embarkation day on....." Maybe some of this will be helpful when you are deciding what people want....if not, sorry for so many words.
