God I don't know what draws me to this album, it just is so raw in form and it just gives me chills. Every time I try to show someone this album, they dismiss it as terrible singing... I just don't understand why they could think that. It just goes to show that we don't need the best, most edited vocals to make moving, and excellent music.
Cody McDaniel The first time I heard her, I was asking my friend "WTF is this crap.." And after listening to it for a week in her car, I was hooked. I totally understand.
I went to her Seattle show... My sister listens to kinda mainstream alternative rock and is a popular musician herself among her people... She came with me --- she was a little worried I was so excited mwahahahaha... We were in the second row and she was absolutely MESMERIZING to watch. I found my mind wandering and then just going black from the sheer visual nirvana generated by the movements of her fingers and the standing waves generated by her strings and her costume and attractiveness and guitar / everything player and her whole family on stage with her and her voice and married to Andy Sandberg-ness. I cried during several songs for absolutely no reason except that in pure beauty in art there is a quality that makes the heart ache simply because it makes the heart feel as though it has been understood... It was probably the best concert of my life and one of the best moments. My sister was SURPRISED, to say the least.. Next, to BABYMETAL!
Walnut Whales is the self-distributed debut EP by Joanna Newsom. It was released on CD-R in 2002. Though the majority of the tracks were re-recorded, with very slightly altered lyrics, for her debut full length album The Milk-Eyed Mender, three of the songs - "Erin", "Flying a Kite", and "The Fray" - are otherwise unreleased. Being a limited edition release, it is now unavailable outside of file-sharing networks and second-hand exchanges. Track listing[edit] All songs written by Joanna Newsom. "Erin" - 3:38 "Cassiopeia" - 4:00 "Peach, Plum, Pear" - 3:27 "Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie" - 3:52 "Flying a Kite" - 6:34 "The Fray" - 3:22 "En Gallop!" (Spelled without an "!" on The Milk-Eyed Mender) - 6:26 "The Book of Right-On" - 4:40
My understanding from what I've read and heard in her interviews is that calling Walnut Whales and Yarn and Glue "EPs" that were "released" is a bit of an overstatement. She said there was very little forethought into their recording - that it didn't involve much more than pressing the record button on a laptop. She didn't think of them as EPs or even intend to distribute them at first, they were just meant to be personal documents of the songs she'd written. Eventually, when she started playing shows, she made CD copies to give to a few friends and also just to have something to sell at the merch table, and that's when they spread around and eventually got her her first record deal.
Perfect songs to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past ..
Erin lyrics: Erin, Erin, Erin! Errin' across America Do now cheer me on Can you hear the song for you? Quick, now, caramel dip Give it up to the runaway ship Hail, now, hail to the bitch The hairy literary with the nervous, nervous twitch Shy, your light pops out And we stand there astounded And we pound our heads and shout We shout 'alleluia' Well, look what it did to ya Oh, a horrible mess And we're eatin' by the river in the sunday dress Oh, serenade me Eatin' the biscuits and gravy You are missin' from me As you juggle with your uncle in the red, red sea I will wait, or will Knock my knees and talk, you oh so still Oh, Shenandoah We just crossed the wide Missouri You are so... Bonny, shhhhhh, do not worry Quick, now, caramel dip Give it up to the runaway ship Life's so sweet and so low Buried in the water, yeah, buried in the snow So dear, deep and so dark Sleepin' under papers in the central park Twentieth floor balcony houses what is home to me Twentieth floor balcony houses what is home to me Twentieth floor balcony houses what is home to me
I had a chance to say hello to her once, when she was playing at a super small venue in SoHo. But she had just finished a set and her music so completely blew me away I was speechless. Her artistry is just so amazing.
Yeah -- I feel like her albums started out very dreamy and grounded, and by the time Divers came around she was show exploring much more other worldly areas.
In my opinion, It's not that this is any "better" or "worse" than her studio work, it's that I respond to the youth and freedom in her spirit. This isn't going to sell more than a few thousand copies in this form, so I suppose over time her edges have been worn down. I'm maybe over-thinking this. But. It's astounding as-is, easily one of my favorite records just for the complete statement it makes.
No one captivates like Joanna. This seminal work is fantastic and comes across as a demo for her masterwork, Milk Eyed Mender. Apparently she was only singing and composing for a few weeks when these recordings were made. Surprised that Flying a Kite didn't get re-recorded. That song is perhaps the most accessible in the lot and she may have considered it too linear.
The correct name of the third song is "Peach, Plumb, Pear" . The same song was released later with some changes on The Milk-Eyed Mender and the name was changed to "Peach, Plum, Pear"
Björk is outstanding but Joanna is the best. I never thought they were all too similar but there are some songs where they sound quite similar like Cosmia. I think she sounds more like Kate Bush on Have One on Me
I think the version of "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" on this EP is softer, gentler, and much more melancholy and intimate than the version on The Milk-Eyed Mender. I prefer the EP version to the album version, but it's good to have both.
i do think in a way this is better than milk-eyed mender or just simply the recorded form cause these are so animate and airy and free. but yeah this version of peach plum pear is outta control.
just want to say thank you for posting this! what a rare piece of magnificent work, very grateful to be able to experience this in this form! i listen to this so so much since discovering it. and i am continually diving into deeper appreciation for this. it's such a moving, potent body of work.
they should release this, maybe like a limited edition or something. it's rawness makes it simply beautiful and just as worthy of selling as her other albums.. I'd buy it, I think other people would as well.
Jesus, this is so beautiful, i almost prefer the raw nature of these tracks compared to their "Milk Eyed Mender" counterparts. There's a few negative comments from people i feel bad for, imagine not being able to recognise the magnitude and beauty in her music, couldn't be me.
+David Graham oops I'm commenting to the TOTALLY wrong person... I did that the other day to my friends mom thinking it was my ex of many years... that was WELL embarassing - she thought it was hilarious so it worked out OK HI, nonetheless, GEM
farswept I had no fuckin idea.... now errything imma picture when listening to her songs is that douchebag face... i mean he's alright, but it's kinda shocking tho
+farswept :O, Once, somebody said something like: "I read about her and realized who her husband was...", And I was like "why is that relevant?" And then I googled it and understood, well not really. What was the reason she married him, indeed, why. Lol.
She's amazing and I love her new albums but I always come back to this. My husband was working the door at the show she played here, and he stamped my hand. Possibly the first time we met. Her music is always a thread we have. Thank you, Joanna.
Her singing is kinda pitchy during this whole EP, which isn't necessarily a bad thing (it's subjective, ofc). Personally I like the raw youthful timbre of her voice on this album; makes me nostalgic for my own childhood.
anyone know how to get a hold of a legit copy of this? I found one for sale online for $75 but am not sure how to tell if it's legitimate. I would gladly pay that if I can verify it's authenticity. because I believe the original is just burned cds sold at early shows which would be very easy to fake.
hearing joanna sing bitch in en gallop added 20 years onto my lifespan
This version of the song is raw, beautiful, wild crazy perfection.

It's been the same with everyone I've played her albums for.
Murphy Caldwell I have the same problem guys. No one seems to get it.

jacob jones yeah! no one gets it! oh well! more for us!
i hear ya i got the same problem her music is so moving love it
This is beyond a masterpiece. It's so raw and full of pure love and human emotion. Moving.
Raw like how I beat my chocolate hogg leg 😅
I can't believe that I have only discovered this lovely lady in the past week. Now, I can't stop listening to her! This is art, beautiful art!
+Brian Hall Thanks Dude! :)
+Brian Hall Ah, well as I'm in the UK I won't be able to make it! :) Thanks for the info though.
+Brian Hall I will go to see her when she is in the UK again. My wife is also a big fan so we will make a night of it! :) :) :)
This is my first time hearing the first work from Joanna Newsom how have been missing this all my liiiife
Hands down the best version of En gallop.

Just discovered her music today, going to listen to all her work. Very Unique
I had a chance to say hello to her once, when she was playing at a super small venue in SoHo. But she had just finished a set and her music so completely blew me away I was speechless. Her artistry is just so amazing.
it sounds dreamy, yet grounded and very real

what a gem
Cool, I'm sobbing.
Genius on so many levels.
recorded when she was only 20! Crazy the things people are capable of...

hey -- cool fact.
@Catleya Sherbow and then "pear" can also be heard/read as "pare" or "pair" (i just realized, 14 years after first hearing it)
@penstemon why does plumb indicate a relationship, specifically a crush?
Kind of a Bjork voice, childlike, but with sophisticated musicianship. Sweet and personal melodies with a lot of really good harmonies.
+infrantasi yes every artsy girl in music is definitely basically a mixture of bjork and kate bush :^)
+Justin Wisner I'm not a fan of Bjork, and only 'discovered' Joanna Newsom today. But I too thought of Bjork at times when hearing Joanna's voice.
She is extremely superior to Björk
Björk is outstanding but Joanna is the best. I never thought they were all too similar but there are some songs where they sound quite similar like Cosmia. I think she sounds more like Kate Bush on Have One on Me
yall use the weirdest adjectives to describe women musicians. her voice is high bc she is a soprano, not child-like and compring her to bjork is cheap
I think the version of "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" on this EP is softer, gentler, and much more melancholy and intimate than the version on The Milk-Eyed Mender. I prefer the EP version to the album version, but it's good to have both.
Totally agree
it's so good
This version of Peach Plum Pear is so good, so crazy raw and beautiful. 9:15 to the end is my favourite part.
i do think in a way this is better than milk-eyed mender or just simply the recorded form cause these are so animate and airy and free. but yeah this version of peach plum pear is outta control.
The Fray is great! The whole thing is amazing.

thank you. I've been looking for this version of 'clam, crab, cockle, cowrie' and didn't realize it was from this album.
JN is my most fav singer and this is my most fav EP/album by her! thank you for uploading baxtism
This version of peach plum pear sounds like what I imagine joannas work sounds like to people who don't like her singing.
피치플럼페어 젤좋은...ㅠㅠ 이 앨범이 날것스러운 느낌 가득하고 유니크하고 서투른 듯 솔직해서 좋아요.
Brings me back to 2010 when I began blazing. She made those days a long trek through a magical forest
Only the realest gs blaze it up to walnut whales
She sounded in pain when singing Peach Plum Pear :o
The definitive version of Clam Crab Cockle Cowry
That is what got me to this page.

This is better than her third album. I'm going full hipster.
gibberconfirm gonna have to disagree with you there haha
yes and Ys !! :D
most of these songs are on Milk Eyed Mender tho...
Have one on me is better than all her other albums imo (although Ys is a very close match for me)
Ys is her magnum opus, nothing is better than that.
This is also great, tho.
reminds me of the female version of Daniel Johnson. Very unique music.
Love me some Daniel Johnston
Rest in peace Daniel
Dare I venture to say that this is superior to The Milk Eyed Mender?
It makes me vaguely nauseous it's 10 years old but that's probably my ego.
gibberconfirm understandable.
Hayden Barrow This one is rawer in my opinion, Milk Eyed Mender had a lot more added elements instrument wise and such. They're both beautiful though.
I feel like Milk Eyed Mender is Walnut Whales with a lil' bit a label dough behind it.
Peach plum pear makes me vaguely nauseous but maybe I’m allergic to fruits.
I am still a child.
am i wrong to compare to Daniel Johnston ?
i think im the next one of this for this next coming era of music haha
Also, it was recorded in Austin, Daniel's town, when Joanna lived here.
@@dazeofheaven They are my 2 favorite, in a realm of their own
An actual good comparison for this. Hate when people compare to bjork. Barely any similarities apart from a “weird” singing voice
She's so cute on "peach plum pear." Sounds like she got her little heart broke.

#2019
WHY is this called EP - surely this is a little more than just EXTENDED PLAY?????
The Ramones did albums that were shorter than this EP.
The Ramones did whole albums shorter than her longer songs.
man this keyboard or whatever she is playing sounds 100x better than the harpsichord on Milk-Eyed Mender
+Darren Satchawan She plays harp XD. THE FREAKING GIANT ONE!! :)))
lol fair enough, but that is def not the sound of a harp. should have pointed out I was talking about Peach, Plum, Pear
Ahh, I see. I don't really know, but I like the sound. It makes the song sounds more antique and nostalgic in a way XD
Def more intimate, recorded in her bedroom sound. Cool stuff. Whoever mixed that harpsichord or w/e on the album, terrible job.
I know ! I'm not sure either. Maybe a distorted wurlitzer ?
This exists on the edge of sublime and unlistenable
i thought lisa simpson played the sax
he he!
You can hear frogs in the background.
timestamp?
I'm sorry, I'm new to this but the singing sounds out of tune, is it though? Just trying to understand
The singing is in-tune for the most part.
