- This documentary is of the 9 month journey Desert Turtle Racing took to get to the 2016 King of the Hammers ECM Race. Follow along from just and idea to the dramatic finishing of the EveryMan Challenge.
This video was what inspired me to get off my ass and put together a car for KOH. I’ve now raced 2 times in 4600 and am now going back with a 4400 car. Thank you, I’m sure I’m not the only one that was inspired by this video.
Thank you! It would be great to meet you on the lakebed this year.
Congrats guy’s and crew members, goals accomplished and y’all worked your tails off. That Jeep is amazing, and once you dialed in the shocks, there was no stopping it but flats. That’s great to be able to finish that race! 💪🏼👊🏻
What a great story! I have almost the same one. I didn’t exactly tear it apart that day to enter KOH first thing, just started with dirt Riot, Ultra 4’s tiny baby brother. But you motivate me to keep working up. I’ll be out to watch the race in 20, who knows maybe 21 will be my entry year. Congratulations to you guys not only going for your dream but finishing and placing as high as you did. Super strong
Best.
Hammer.
Documentary.
Ever.
Thanks much. We are really proud of the memory.
Great video and well done showing what it takes to go and compete there.I have friends in the ultra 4 906 car and would love to go there some day, hope to meet yall.Great Job
Epic cut, guys, love the story you put together here.
The 35 thumbs down came from the teams they passed on the course haha.
I don’t know these guys at all but the story they just told and showed has me emotional for what they achieved. Good on you fellas! And congratulations!
Nibiru3064 Our guess is that it was John and his crew at Proving Grounds Racing.
What a race, incredible stamina, glad you were able to finish, it's one wild race, people don't really realise how excruciating the race can be, all the best to yous and your loved ones
I loved this story, great people, perfect team. I would really like to participate in this fantastic race. What an adventure!!
Its really awesome seeing Dustin Hoffman involved in offroad racing. hell of a race guys. thanks for sharing.
hahaha... I've heard that before.
I actually heard someone mention "desert turtle racing" when we were out at chocolate thunder. First of all, it was our first year out there, for only 2 days of the week, and the very end of the EMC, and no idea what trail we were even at when we pulled up... and no idea who desert turtle racing was. Then this video pops up on my RUclips as a recommended video, never having searched for it before, what are the odds. Watched the whole video and made me tear up. It's a very grueling race and even just to finish is an honor. What a great video. I can't wait for next year.
That is awesome!!!! We didn't have such a great race in 2017 but we will be back again in 2018. Please stop by and say hi.
Congratulations on 12th place finish in your class.. Thanks for sharing the emotion, I get it and can feel it.. Great Job to everyone involved..
Just... Awesome..!
Instant subscriber you guys killed it, every part of that build, the movie, and the race itself. The first time I saw that race I knew I had to do it.
My fiancee was PISSED when she got home and found my H3 gutted in our two car garage, only one week after the VA put me on Military disability. I wish I could post a pic for ya, it's empty... And now I found your accomplishment, and I am totally impressed guys..!
I don't care what it takes, I'm going to run my H3 through that course.
Thank you for the inspiration.
An outstanding presentation! The win/finish even brought tears to my eyes.
One day we MUST go through a similar experience. We are working towards that direction! Greeeaat film!
Awesome video! There's nothing more satisfying than finishing a race in a car that you built!
WOW! Congrats. Don't tell anyone, but when you guys made it across the finish line... I wept. Good job!

Outstanding job guys! From the drivers, designers/builders, and the support staff - you guys freakin' killed it out there! Seriously motivating stuff! Scott
fantastic story guys love your work and commitment very inspiring!!
Second time watching this .. great movie, so on the rear you basically cut the original chassis frame off behind the cockpit and replaced it with all DOM tubing?
Front and rear were chopped off and tube frame added.

Holy crap, I wasn’t there but dam that was emotional! Amazing journey guys!
Inspired to make it to Everyman, Thumbs UP!
Yall built a very nice rig and to do it in 8 months and finish the EMC is nothing short of amazing. Like alot of others i would love to do this myself but the closest ill ever get is to ride the area when i make my bucketlist trip from GA to MOAB, The Rubicon and alot of other places. Keep up the good work guys. I look forward to seeing more videos from you.

Great Job guys! Going in a couple weeks for 2019 KOH. Addictive....
Now that scx10 is the most rare rc crawler from axial
BG GALVAN so bummed there wasn’t more backstory about the Axial DTR RC. First RC car to complete the EMC!
Great flick guys!
You guys and your team are DAMN inspiring! Job well done! and good luck at KoH2018!

DTR is no longer as of 2019. We finished our first race in 2016 and then chased the finish line for the next few years.
This was AWESOME !
What a great video! I really liked the out takes at the end.
Great video guys!
Pretty Cool Guys!
Nice job guys, love the video!
You gotta have a support on back of your transfer case, it will save your studs.
I would love to see something like this on Netflix there is absolutely nothing for jeep life rig life crawler life
Great video enjoyed it, way to go.
That was great!
Awsome video guys I'm inspired
Great job you dirty turtles! i had thought KOH had gotten to "big" for the common man. guess i as wrong
LOL.... It's Desert Turtle
Im a huge AXIAL fan
those guys are cool
Hell yeah DTR!
Nice job 💪
that steering wheel flex when "prerunning" is a but worrysome
great film!!
Congratulations Awesome wife = awesome life, awesome friends = awesome life. You have both.Congratulations on finishing that brutal race. Will you be tackling this again in 2017 ?
Not sure why 14 people dislike this but morons are everywhere unfortunately, film quality was great storyline in sync nothing to bitch about IMo.
I would have given you my jeep and paid you for the original point you started from and you could have cut it up LOL.
Thanks. We competed but failed to finish the race in 2018. We'll be back.
amazing
i wish i could do cool stuff like that, sucks being poor:(
48 min are jessi combs . Nice touch rip.
RIP indeed. Jesse was an amazing person.
i could have swore i heard him say something about keeping the "cost" down, didnt see any evidence of that happening.
T M It certainly appears that way but it wasn’t. Over half our costs were covered through sponsorships from people we have relationships with in the industry that we have known and supported for years. We took a 2005 TJ, with a tired 5.3l and trans from an 02 Silverado added a used 14 bolt, a used Dana 60, traded a lift and tools for much of the fabrication and worked nights and weekends to get it built.
I have a AXIAL scx 10 jeep rubicon
epic!!
They keep talking about a car, but they're working on a Jeep...
that was awsm
good music
What size tires were they? What did it cost to build? Awesome that you both finished! Great video!
Vince Fairleigh The EMC modified class restricts tire size to 37's. As for cost I know it was more than anticipated and still counting !
RockBottom Jeep you guys are inspiring! This is what I want to do eventually.
I’m curious what Axial supplied?
The details of the sponsorship cannot be disclosed haha. But they had a pretty big part in getting us into the race.
ectosports I wish they would sponsor a serious RC race there sometime during the week there in KOJ JV.
@@chrisstrobel3439 maybe this year. Watch for detials coming.
ectosports Ahh cool! Actually I think they should do the whole 165 mile, etc. course in Ultra 4 RC’s, that would require the fitness of ultra elite endurance runners and athletes .. which would pretty much rule out anybody I’ve ever known in the 1:1 crawling world 😬 Would make for quite the show as you tune in week after week to see their progress 😬 lol. Anyway assuming Biden doesn’t shut down America next year for Covid .. I look forward to going to 2021 KOH as a 1:1 spectator, and RC enthusiast, and wish you the best 👍
Right at 32:50 mins, looks like someone lost their screwdriver.
Shade Tree what ?
Kruz Kedreck look on the ground under the jeep.
Hi
Jessi Combs @ 48:16 RIP
Sooo. How much$$$?
so since you have like advanced adapters stuff on your rig they just give you the parts if your racing?
xd gangster69 It depends. At our level, they’re not going to just give us anything we want but some sponsors are happy to throw a few parts your way when you’re competing and displaying their name on your rig.
no tenian llanta de repuesto, no sabian como cambiarla, o que chow
kenny fabrication looks like it should be called shoe string budget fab. wow talk about zero tool or equipment.
What was your power plant cam and gears?
The Catalyst It was stock 5.3l from a 2002 Silverado with a 4L60 trans. Magnaflow did our exhaust which is why it sounds so great. Gears were 5.38’s if I remember correctly. Honestly, it had barely enough power and I was amazed the motor lasted the race. The Turtle tipped the scales at over 5k lbs. Shes a pig. The reason we finished was because we had to go slow and run our own race.
John Grounds good people.
John is a good friend. When he relocated to CA from FL, his first trail run in CA was with us. He broke a front axle shaft on the gatekeeper of the John Bull trail in Big Bear, CA and still ran the entire trail without so much as a tug. Pretty sure that's when he caught the rock crawling bug. We all had a good time with lots of friendly competition between us.
What engine are they running?
Vortec 5.3l V8
good deal
How did you guys do this year?
Unfortunately they battled mechanical issues all race. Started with two flat tires in the first three miles. ended the race at mile 88 with steering issues. They will get them next year!
better carry 2 spares if it legal
Gary johns The Turtle is with a new owner and team. They modified it to carry two spares this year. 😉
Probably just me, but annoying pet peeve of mine, whenever they say "car" instead of 'jeep' or 'rig'.
Pro teams call them cars as well.
Be eS totally correct it is not a car or truck it is a JEEP
Yup annoyed the crap out of me...lol
I have been practicing to call it a rig because it is far from a car. Or I just call it the Turtle.
Man....it makes me cringe too. You're not alone.
You should of just sold the trail rig and bought a cheep base model tj. You wasted a rubicon and used nothing from old rig. Build and learn I guess
It was not much of a Rubicon to begin with. The original axles were already upgraded 44's but we knew the rig needed 60's. So the old axles were sold.
semi modded jeep could beat this build no problem
ITS A JEEP!!!! So annoying.....
excellent work! compliments !
