I’m looking forward to the next part of this adventure. You know, I remember the day you got that cool looking HB like it was yesterday. How fast the days go!!!!
Hey Kris, These vibrating sanding machines are awesome for more delicate work. If you want to sand faster a random orbital sander is way faster in my experience. I got mine (Bosch something)for about 50€ at obi and I am pretty pleased with it. I sanded my tabletop way more often than I intended to.. I messed up the finish twice sooo.. 😅
Good job. I understand what you mean about the humbuckers and also agree that the guitar sounds great with the coil split in. Sometimes when the humbuckers get to hot and gets this extremely high output, they tend to sound sterile or clinic in a way. Losing personality. I think it is no coincidence the originals are designed as they are. But we are all different so it is always a good thing every time a guitarist finds his dream tone.
Thank you for boost my confident with HB guitars. I decided to purchase HB Fusion-T HH HT EB OCT. I love features of Fusion series, but I am a little bit sad because they go with H-H instead of S-S config for a Tele. Right away, I will swap stock pups with Bill Lawrence L-90 pair. For my ultimate DREAM Tele, I will buy a premium kit from Warmoth and build S-S config Tele for my classic sounding dream Tele. I listened to your DIY Tele with tremolo arm, it sounds awesome. It encourages me a lot.
Kris. When hand sanding I use Nitrile mechanics disposable gloves. Like super strong surgical gloves they are like a second skin. It’s Important it’s Nitrile NOT Latex. Latex is bad for you. Great video- cheers 😀👍👍
Great video. That neck looks really nice. I bought an SE PRS I'm wearing the frets out, it's only been two years and they are groovy man. I'm thinking about get something like that and modding it. Great content.
It's looking awesome , at the begining i was not that sure the wood finish would be that great. I expect you to oil it without any colour and let it matt finish.
Nice! I have the same guitar and love it! Put some Seymour Duncan’s in it, changed the electronics and some overal TLC and now it punches even more above its weight! I really enjoy watching these projects
Great video, I find all your builds inspiring and engaging to watch (even though I'm still working up the courage to change the nut on my guitar, let alone go crazy with a sander on it 🤣)!
Ohh Wow!! That's quite reassuring: I have the same Harley Benton, and same experience with the original pickups: love the split sounds, but not so much the humbucker sounds. And interestingly enough, I ordered the same replacement pickups: Fishman Fluence Classics! :-D I got them delivered a couple of weeks ago, but haven't had the time to install them yet... I was hoping to do that this weekend, but maybe I'll just wait until part 2 (and 3?) of the video is out, to see if the change is worth it, and maybe get a couple of good ideas ;) (no body sanding for mine, though!). Looking forward to next ones!
That looks insane! I got myself the very same guitar and love it, though I have already make some tweaks: I swapped the electronics with CTS and switchcraft, I replaced the pickups with polish custom shop, hand built Hathor Juicer and BGV (these are KILLER!). That is now my No. 1 axe, can't take my hands off it. Good luck with Your project, cheers!

Poly is so ridiculously sturdy, there is absolutely ZERO scratches or anything on the front. If it was nitro I would’ve covered it up of course. Guitar Tweakz 4 life! 😝
I love the sound of my Harley Benton Sc custom Fr in the middle position with the coils split, oooh what a gloriously fat snappy sound. Do what you want with the back and sides just Don’t hurt that beautiful sparkle top!!!!
Great video! For the sides you can use a power drill, that wood looks amazing i wouldn't put any color on it, the oil will make the flame pop up really nice.
Yeah, those split sounds are insane, really thinking about getting this just for those tones (can hardly otherwise justify to buy superstrat #55 LOL). Totally agree, oil back n sides are mandatory! Really interested if this method works to remove the poly, on flat sides yes, but on the curves, and on the inside of the horns... ouch, maybe dremel time but really hard not to mess up the curves with a small barrel considering the force needed. Heat gun doesn't go well with thick poly either, maybe a chemical solution? if I go for it I might just lightly sand the gloss to make it matte, although I would love oil, with indeed a subtle stain. Oh, and love how your work bench is actually a... bench... weeeell, Grandma's bench ;P
Yep, do it! Its fun and a relaxing sen exercise if you take your time and train your patience (like Mr. Miaggi would suggest)😉💜🤘. I build and modded several guitars and I can only say its very rewarding to gain your skills and experiences🖖
the split coil sounds great on your setup!! on mine i really like the humbucker sound, though it was a bit on the dark side but i´m able to make her scream!! but the split coil sound were not usable at all on my setup, but yours do sounds great!
Kris: great stuff as always! I'm no expert like you but must ask: why didn't you protect the front side of the guitar during all that sanding? To my layman's eyes, all that dust on the work surface could not be good for the finish on the top, right? Even though it is the same thick polyurethane. Or you didn't protect the front because you will polish the entire axe anyway? Cheers and looking forward to part II!
Hey, poly is so crazy sturdy, there’s literally zero scratches on the top after all that work. I was ready to polish it if necessary but there’s no reason for it. It’s maybe hard to believe, but that’s how hard polyurethane is. Cheers
How does the wilkinson bridge hold up for tuning? I own the fusion-ii telecaster version without a tremelo but would like an st version of the fusion-ii for David Gilmour style playing.
Hi Kris, Very cool video! I have an old roundback guitar wich I'm planing to repaint. Never done that before so I have a few questions: How can I tell which kind of laquer is on and does it matter for the new lacquer? Do I have to remove all of the old paint or can in put the new paint over the old one? Thanks a lot Max
What would you recommend to make metal parts matte? I've tried KUDO matt coating (acrylic spray), but feels like it won't last long because of bad adhesion. Maybe I should somehow prepare parts before painting (sanding or some chemicals)? Wanna make my HB JB-75 bass look a bit modern and not to collect fingertips so easily.
The finish on the backside seemed to be very tough. How many pieces of sandpaper did you have to use? Really looking forward to see the outcome of this project. I just finished my first eclectronic and pickup swap with my cheap LP studio (2008) and I am still messing with the pickup height to find the sweetspot.
Hi Kris, please, i would like to ask you, if had an opportunity to compare this model to other types uf fusion II. This type has 22 frets and covered humbuckers and almost every other has 24 frets and uncovered (i previously owned this type and now im waiting for silver sparkle one) So, is there any.major difference in tone and etc.?

I can share my personal experience: you can tape off the sections of the neck that you don‘t want to sand at the headstock and the neck joint. Use multiple layers and make a nice curve. Then you sand, and I would suggest to start rough, 50-100grit. Poly is super tough and you will need to change the sanding paper a lot. Then go up to 400 wet sanding, use a tiny amount of wax if you want and done. If you want to re-finish the neck that is a different story and a lot more work. I would recommend an oil finish with one penetrating oil and one oil that hardens the surface. Apply the oil with the sanding paper, let dry for 10 minutes, then firmly rub in the gunk with a cloth. Then wait for 24 hours until applying the next layer.
Nice Vid Kris! I have a personal problem with 60 cycle hum. Would you please tell me, do you use a Noise Gate when playing Single Coil Pickups? Thank you, cheers from Salem, Ohio US!

You can't funk without knocking it out of position 😎
Remove sparkle too, please
Maybe one day. Not now though. I like the contrast between the roasted natural neck and the silver finish. 🤷♂️
