- Poor Rhonda! I’m sure she agreed to take part in this show just for a bit of fun and games with her family - little did she realise that for her appearance on Family Challenge she was going to be the target for some very harsh treatment! And that she was going to get a public humiliation that she will never forget!
There’s a part of me that feels bad laughing at a grown woman's humiliation like this, but honestly, this scene is pretty hilarious. :D. The setup involved a game that is a sort of pass the parcel routine, with the loser getting a slime balloon over the head. The very attractive Rhonda clearly doesn't want to get messy, and she tries to cheat and get a young girl contestant to face the punishment instead of her. However, the eagle eyed presenter is having none of this, and when she is found out, she is deliciously presented with a double forfeit of two gunge balloons over the head. It seems that she was perfectly willing to take her punishment after an enjoyable, and not entirely false, display of reluctance, as she giggles, flirts and play acts along. But that attitude will not last ....
I don't think she was expecting those two balloons to do so much mess to her, and she clearly doesn't enjoy being the subject of everyone’s amusement, as the gunge drips slowly down her gorgeous face.
This reluctance makes it all the more of a delight to see the cruelty continue though, as the sadistic presenter doesn't think she has been punished enough; and, clearly jumping at any opportunity to further humiliate this wonderful target in front of her husband, children, and the entire nation, his perverse will dictates that she has to endure ANOTHER two gunge balloons. The fun really begins now, and it is a pleasure to watch how her face and reactions change when she realises that her gunge ordeal is not over! The first onslaught distressed her so much, that she can't hide her dismay at the prospect of being on the receiving end of another. By now she is too upset to continue the act of playing along; and the smiles of just a few second before have completely disappeared - as have any hopes she may have harboured that her husband would step in to stop her suffering; unfortunately for her though, he, like everybody else, is too busy laughing at her, and enjoying her predicament to the full, so there is no escape for her and she is left to her messy fate.
Her quivering lips beg for mercy, but she is fortunately shown none, and gets her entirely well-deserved just desserts, as the balloons are burst over her head again, ensuring she gets a second dose of punishment. The gunge DESTROYS her, and covers her entire face and hair, as an ecstatic crowd laughs and cheers at her state. True to the presenter’s word, poor Rhonda's lips are not red anymore, but are a lovely mix of gungey yellow and green, just like the rest of her face and hair! She is a complete mess, and looks absolutely gorgeous; and what makes it even better is that she can't hide how completely humiliated she has been by the whole experience. She stands with her hands on both hips, as the presenter shows no qualms about standing right in front of her face to admire the damage and gloat about her distress. She struggles to hold back her tears as she tries, unsuccessfully, to wipe the gunge from her face. The incident has been so traumatic for her that she even threatens the author of her misfortune with something as she leaves the stage; but the laughing of the audience, the other contestants, and the cute referee who escorts her out of camera shot completely drowns the threat out as she walks away shaking her head with embarrassment. Beautiful :D.

"Poor Rhonda" was a neighbor of a close friend of mine at the time that this show aired in the mid-1990s. She was indeed "completely humiliated" by this television appearance, and in fact never recovered from the cheap slapstick assault passing as "entertainment" that she suffered in front of her husband, children, a studio audience of hundred and a television audience of hundreds of thousands. My friend tells me that Rhonda endured a dozen additional indignities in the final months of her life, and became a sort of unwilling neighborhood "stooge" around town--everyone she knew had tuned in to catch her "Family Challenge" appearance and seemed to want to add to her embarrassment. Her own mailman smashed a large bakery cake in her face as a "special delivery" prank; a local grocery store concocted a fake "millionth customer" award, then dumped five gallons of molasses and chocolate over her head; a local PTA chairman smashed a banana cream pie in her face in front of hundreds of parents and school officials during an awards banquet; and on a number of occasions teenagers in her neighborhood pelted her with eggs, shoved her into muddy pits, and on one occasion pulled a pillow case filled to the brim with shaving cream over her head, then shoved her onto a city bus packed with laughing people. Rhonda's own husband--who, as this clip reveals, was and remains to this day a sadistic monster--laughed at and even encouraged these humiliations...then eventually separated from his wife because, as my friend says he told me, he claimed to have "lost all respect for her." Finally, on March 2nd, 1996, unable to be a "good sport" any longer, Rhonda took her own life with an overdose of sleeping pills. Ironically, this happened three months to the day before the suicide of "Family Challenge" host Roy Combs--was he suffering from some degree of guilt over what he'd caused these families to suffer? For those of you who think that plucking a person out of a studio audience and then slathering them with goo is a good laugh, PLEASE remember that these are REAL PEOPLE with REAL FEELINGS!
