    Sonic SatAM is my favorite show from the Sonic franchise! I watched it a lot in the 90's on Saturday mornings. I even read the Sonic Archie Comics too. This show is why I read those comics, why I love that theme song and why Princess Sally is my favorite Sonic girl character.
    Plus, Jaleel White as Sonic...Way past cool!

    I saw SatAM few years before I discovered AoSTH. And when I did, it took me some time to realize it was a separate show.
    And while both are pretty different from the games, SatAM felt kinda parallel to 2000s Sonic games to some extent

    Sonic The Hedgehog SatAM is continued in the Archie Comic's Sonic The Hedgehog Series.
    I saw the Pilot Episode 1 Summer Friday Night in 1993 before Fall that year, watched it all the way through and was saddened that it was left on a cliff hanger and cancelled due to Power Rangers...

    it was powerful for me and my sister in the early 2010s when we discovered reruns of it while literally fighting over the remote. and it stunned us, and ended the fighting. i had never taken sonic seriously before then, my generation looked down on sonic so i hadn't given it a 2nd glance before this.
    i definatley fell in love with the show, and so did my sister. and we would make time to catch all the episodes we could. although i think it had a bigger impact on me, seeing as i still return to it every once and a while and of course, i actually got into other sonic stuff as a result of the show and she didn't. but SatAM and the semi-related archie comics are still my favourite part of the franchise.
    it disapointed me greatly when i discovered there was a canceled tie-in game.

    SatAm is how many of the fans want the series to progress-darker, more nuanced elements; Robotnik as more of a threat, and overall a great dynamic of characters-especially Sally.

As a 90's kid I watched the Sonic cartoons every weekend on Channel 4 religiously and made sure to record them all on video so I could watch them back later. The Doomsday Project finale was one of my most hyped moments of the show 😁

    I actually saw this when it first aired on ABC back in the nineties right around your age of 8/9, only 1992/1993 when the series was first getting off it's feet and in it's infacy. Jaleel White was the hot thing...he was doing Family Matters AND this show. Just shows what incredible range the dude had. This show was so awesome to me back in the day and I'm glad it left such an incredible mark on many Sonic fans to this day. Ben Hurst left behind a great legacy and the incredible folks over at the Sea3on Project are continuing that. I hope they succeed.

    Fellow Brit here, I remember watching this back then too in 1994 since the first episode as well, and I believe the first time I actually knew about this show before it debut in the UK was from an episode of GamesMaster that gave a preview of the intro. SatAM in general is such a great TV show and it's definitely one of the better pieces of official Sonic media outside of the video games, I mean talk about the complete opposite to AoStH which came out at the same time. It was darker, more serious, better written and animated, and it was actually cool!

    • @HillTopTerebi

    I love this series! Though they’re A LOT of differences in this show though for instance it takes place in a world where Robotnick already won, The series has a darker tone, Sonic’s partner/sidekick of the show replaced Tails with Sally etc. It’s really sad that they had a lot more planned for the series and planned on expanding the heroes & villains of this show and probably have a AMAZING and different story.

    I had the exact same experience with the intro! I expected AoStH. Except, what really locked it in for me, was the Title Card right after where you cut. Killer intro into an epic orchestral fanfare. Made it sound so friggin epic. It set me up for the rest of the episode, which was Sonic Racer; one of the series' best

    I first saw SatAM on CTV, a Bell-owned channel in Canada, the week it premiered in 1993. I was already familiar with Sonic, having played the first two games at a friend's house. I was 5 years old at the time, and the premiere just blew me away! AoSTH had already started its syndication run on YTV, a channel run by Corus Entertainment. Like you, I didn't particularly take to its brand of humor.
    But when SatAM began, I was hooked. I then soon discovered that Archie Comics was already publishing a monthly comic book that had the SatAM cast in it!

    When I was 6 years old(in 99), I remember seeing a little bit of one episode in the morning(I missed the intro) & I was enjoying it. Sadly I couldn’t watch the full episode because it was a school morning. Later my mother and I walked into a block buster and I saw a tape 📼 with a couple of the episodes on it. Then I got home and watched the episodes and MAN I was hooked. I loved the intro, The story, everything! After that I got into the comic books(& games) and I became a Sonic fan lol 😂. I’m 30 now and I have the full series on DVD. The Mobius freedom fighter sonic is my favorite version.

    I watched AoStH and Sonic Underground as a kid, but one day my dad swaped on SatAM Sonic and I was mind blown.
    About a year ago (12 at this point) I started to look up what I could watch it on. I forgot what it was, but I started watching and it was epic.
    On a separate note; I would watch Sonic X as a kid, but I would specifically look up Shadow Vs. Sonic or Knuckles Vs. Sonic.

  • @SorcererLance
    @SorcererLance 4 месяца назад

    I still vividly remember the buildup to this show back in the day as a kid in the US... The earliest comic issues of Archie Sonic hyped it up with each issue in the page where they shared fan letters and I remember as a kid wondering what Sonic's voice was gonna sound like... I didn't expect Steve Urkel, but I quickly got used to it as we got not only SatAM on Saturdays, but also AoStH on weekdays... which had a nasty habit of airing when I was in school so I had to set the timer on my VCR to watch it when I got home.
    I won't deny that SatAM isn't without its flaws, but it was my first experience to a semi-serious, dark kind of storytelling in a cartoon where there were actual stakes and a villain that had already won before the show even began... and I was never into superheroes back then.
    It still remains my favorite incarnation of Sonic, despite it being nothing what Sega of Japan envisioned... as Sonic Forces later taking the very same premise and botching it... felt like an insult to us older fans :|

    So, fun fact: America got Adventures and SatAM at the same time! Apparently SatAM was originally planned to be the only sonic cartoon running (hehe) in the US, but there was some drama with some networks. Something about exclusivity deals and tone, I don't remember the whole thing, but the end result was two Sonic cartoons running side by side. On one channel, was the comedy-oriented Adventures for younger kids. And on the other, was the more story driven SatAM for older kids. Was this confusing for Sonic fans in America? I have no idea, I was born in 2000 and had no idea what a Sonic was until 2008 XD!
    I think my first exposure to SatAM was on a DVD I rented from a local Redbox, and I absolutely loved it! Don't have much more to say about it other than that I remember rewatching that DVD over and over as a kid, until I found it on Netflix and proceeded to binge watch the entire show. Oh, and imagine my surprise when I discovered the Archie comics and saw all the SatAM characters alongside all of the modern characters! Blew my little 10 year old mind! XD

    • @katagon
      @katagon 2 года назад

      @BlankBlares Actually, no. Adventures didn't really have much of an effect on SatAM season 3. You can thank the Archie comic writer Ken Penders for season 3 not getting made. But that's a whole other rabbit hole with its own twists and turns. I don't want to get too into it because, as far as I know, we don't have much proof that Ken was the cause beyond just one man's word against his, but if you'd like to look into it yourself, and don't mind diving into the insanity that is the Ken Penders drama, there are plenty of RUclips videos on the subject. Be warned though, this drama is Adventures level insanity

      The saturday market and weekday market were very much influenced by who they sold the ad packages to, which is part of why you had a saturday show and a weekday show. The weekday show means bigger ad revenue, while the weekly sat show is aimed more at international syndication (which it got). And several countries over the long run did play both shows, on different networks.

    I’m of a very similar age, and my own experience nearly mirrors what you describe in the video. With maybe the slight exception that I didn’t actually like SATAM on initial viewing of the episode with Cat.
    That changed the following week when they expanded the world a little, and then I was hooked.
    Just like you, I was a Sonic fan who tolerated “Adventures” because I was that much of a Sonic fan. SATAM came out of absolutely nowhere and I even remember some SATAM repeats being packed with the Adventures intro sequence. They seemed to always run them together as a continuous season.
    Fun to hear others who also read «STC» experienced SATAM back then in Channel 4

    Unfortunately I missed out on the cool Sonic stuff back in the day. I was a Nintendo nerd. A big Mario fan (was even somewhat bullied for it) and anything that challenged my beloved Nintendo I was obviously against.
    That's not to say I did not find Sonic intriguing. I remember fondly staying at my friend's house on the weekends and watching him play Sonic 3&k while snacking on nutty buddy bars and drinking diet soda (mmm delicious pure aspartame to fuel my 'sperged little brain!) And the aesthetics of that game really inspired me in my artwork and other things.
    I did not really get much into Sonic fully until the late 90s. I was living in Florida at the time, the year was 98 (I think) and I stumbled across the website Team Artail and discovered the wonders of Sonic fanart, comics and.... yeah... Sonic OC's. I started collecting the then current Archie Sonic comics And from there on I began to sperg really hard over the blue blur. I even bought my first Sega system, betraying my beloved Nintendo their still amazing Nintendo 64 console at the time. I wanted to play Sonic Adventure because it looked damn amzing so there sat the new Dreamcast next to my dusty Nintendo consoles (I still have it :D)!
    Still, I did not get to watch the SatAM series until my post college days (early to mid 2000s). Living in my own apartment, having my own internet. I found a website that had a download for the entire SatAM series and I lay on my couch between long work hours and marathoner each episode religiously.
    My fanboyism eventually died down and I found the Sonic fandom a little too cringe for my liking. Gone were the glory days of the old internet, Team Artail and the ever so exciting roleplay forums that got me into some creative storytelling. I was beginning to feel modern sonic was overated, and a little overkill at times with teen edginess, plotholes and terrible voice acting (Sonic Adventure just did not age well also I should add here) amid other things that gradually turned me away fully the franchise.
    Today I still find the older Sonic comics fascinating. I discovered Sonic the Comic back around 2010 and I've read all the issues after torrenting them to a portable hard drive. I still really do like Sonic even the more current iterations with Sonic Mania and some of the other games that I was able to get on my Switch.
    I'll stop here for now. that's pretty much my story with the blue blur. :)

    SatAM was my introduction to Sonic the Hedgehog. I only saw some bits of one episode back when it was current, but that was enough to hook me and become a fan. I tried to get my hands on as much Sonic stuff as possible. Never got the video games until I got Sonic Advance on the GBA years later (I wasn't a fan of the Sonic Adventure redesign then. Still technically not a fan, but it's somewhat grown on me now so I don't mind it). Still a fan to this day and I've even finally binged all of SatAM ages ago.

  • @Trance88

    I first saw Sonic SatAM back in the fall/winter of 1995 on the USA network. I was already watching AoStH on UPN at the time and I felt SatAM was just a little "too dark" as I was used to watching things like Rugrats, Doug, Rocko's Modern Life. As of the early 2000's, Sonic SatAm is my bread and butter interpretation of Sonic The Hedgehog, along with the Archie published, Sonic the hedgehog comic book series. The comic is largely set in the same universe as SatAM throughout its entire run, and in my opinion, was the spiritual continuation of SatAM, continuously evolving. It was devastating for me to see the Archie Sonic series end in 2017 as that meant the end of anything officially licensed by Sega tied to the SatAM universe. No more Sally, Rotor, Antoine, or Bunnie Rabbot, Muttski, or Uncle Chuck.

    • @HillTopTerebi
      @HillTopTerebi  2 года назад

      It would be great if the SatAM cast could make an appearance in Sonic Prime, but I don't know if they're going to go down the route of going to old cartoons etc. It would be awesome if they did, but from the concept art it looks like new, original multiverses Sonic will be visiting. (Just thinking outloud of ways Sally etc. could return. Probably a licensing nightmare though!)

    Three years ago, I was in contact with what I initially believed to be the voice of Sally Acorn on Facebook, but found out very quickly that it was a scam artist when they asked me to buy a very specific gift card for them. Worse than that, this person didn’t even get Kath Soucie’s age or date of birth correct when I quizzed them about it.

    I distinctly remember the first episode i saw was that episode where sonic blows up Robotnik's mining facility with those weird tentacle-burrowing machines - i even did a video on it for the shows 30th birthday!

    Although I was never born when the show first aired, I had dvd's of all of the seasons of sonic satam. To me, this show was wayyyyy past coool. But looking back at it now, I remember back then when I was younger I always asking myself "Is the Adventures of Sonic the hedgehog, Sonic Satam, and Sonic Underground all connected as some part of one grand universe" Because the artstyles from those 3 are so similar, I treated them as one continuity of sorts. But Of course they're not. Also I was looking foward to the reveal character of that mysterious figure with glowing red eyes in the finale. Where they by any chance going to introduce metal sonic?

    1:03 I watched AOSTH and I actually the hilarious slapstick humor. I don’t hate it as much as everyone else but yeah it’s still a little too goofy for Sonic the Hedgehog. I still prefer SatAm Sonic as it’s much darker and serious but still fits with Sonic’s personality and character.

    Satam has a spectacular setup with a sadistic Robotnik and it’s very serious and the characters are great as well as the atmosphere. It’s very immersive but, it doesn’t have enough action and it doesn’t push the story as much as it should have. I hope the fan made season 3 is much better and I hope it’s very successful. For me, the biggest mistake when it comes to Sonic Franchise is its tone. There is no need to be dark to be serious, especially if your plot is already ridiculous, all will ends up on a bad edgy product.
