This is such an underrated book. I feel like I didn't absorb it the first time when I got it from the library so it's probably time to read through it again.
This video... Is exactly what I needed. I've been SO reluctant to create recently. I've had that spark, that desire to, but life has kept me busy and so, with everything that's been happening, I've convinced myself that there are "better things to do" when I do have some spare time. This video truly spoke to me, though. It spoke to that spark that I've been keeping bottled up. Let's get creating, everyone. Let's share our spark!
You "exactly need" what you decide.. Things you watch are adapted to your situation and context because YOU make it so. You decide to listen or look at something and feel good about it, or worse. People continue attributing their changes in state of mind to things outside of them. They don't realize their weakness.. He didn't make this for you, he wasn't thinking of you.. he was, in fact, being super general about it! And more importantly, he doesn't know or care about you.. not really. How can he!? Yet you watched it and you decided it improved your mood, even it nothing changed.. did you even notice?
@Big_Dai of course he didn't make this video for me! It would be silly to think otherwise. He doesn't know me or care about me, nor will he ever. However! Watching this did cheer me up, general as it may be. Anyone could take this video and apply it to their lives. It was my choice to watch the video and my choice to feel better, absolutely. I just wanted to share that I felt it improved my mood! It may not matter to anyone but me, but that's OK!
As someone who has been struggling with depression and anxiety for years and my family not supporting my art career, I really needed this! Your videos are always a treat, keep up the amazing work and art Josh!
Been there man, but it gets better trust me. Start with self love and positive mental talk, get your diet right, and throw in some light exercise, and be excited about how great you are..and how cool the future is going to be. I struggled with anxiety and depression for 5 years, and one day I started making small steps to take better care of myself and my mind, meditation, yoga, talking into a mirror saying "you're awesome, and you can do whatever you want to in this life" Small things like that add up over the months, and eventually you realize being depressed or anxious is a waste of the time you could spend being happy and filled with passion. Best of luck to you, there's an awesome person inside waiting to blossom..just takes time and effort!
I'm 40, been drawing and writing since i was 7. Something i came to understand about "Originality" over the years was something close to this. As creators, we're all mostly working with the same ingredients but what makes it original is the theme behind the creation itself. Even if what we create has been created before, we continue its creation because we personally see value behind its continued existence. We don't want that particular style or flavor or message or theme to fade into obscurity, that is what drives culture. Culture is the combined productions we create and the skills we master to maintain those creations.
I needed to hear this! I am 46 and have been a graphic designer for about 20 years. I have always had an interest in doing illustration/cartooning, but I have been a bit hesitant from feeling like I don’t have anything special to offer. This hit me the right way. Thanks!!!
Key takeaways. 1. Execution above all else, is what matters. 2. Distraction is the enemy of creativity. 3. Being unique is overrated. 4. Leverage passions as a drive for motivators. 5. Being relatable is the untapped super power. Thanks for sharing.
You're blessed, man. For real. The part that resonated with me the most was the ``Give up? I've given up a couple of times. Temporarily, always temporarily. 'Cuz I can't help but come back to it.´´ If we're always coming back to It, It can only mean that there's something calling us, there's still something for us there... Anyways, much love, gratitude and respect from Brazil!
I know this video was more meant for artists, but I’m a mathematician (well technically a mathematician in training lol) and this really resonated with me. I love animation and I love to draw. I’ve always wanted to fuse the two passions and tell an animated story that takes place in a non-Euclidean world or make an animated story inspired by algebraic structures and group theory. This video is really inspiring me to learn to animate so I can do that. Also in math there’s a similar sentiment to what you shared. In math there’s always this pressure to find the “most clever” or “most elegant” proof. And when you’re someone like me, someone who has no previous family member who perused a STEM field and someone who’s just trying their best to understand what math is really about, that type of pressure is overwhelming. It makes me think that if I fail find the “most clever” proof then I must not belong in math. But just as you said, so long as the logic works out, it really doesn’t matter if the proof is as clever as possible. At the end of the day a proof is a proof. It gets the job done regardless of if more clever or creative solutions exist. Thank you so much for making this.
This is interesting to read because as I've learned more upper level math, I've realized that it's its own art. To the everyday person there's no reason to learn some complex, niche topics seen in math but to the people who love it, you can see the passion flowing through them as they share their ideas and creativity through the medium of math! Good luck on your journey!
That's really cool that you're so passionate about math and can tie it to art in that way! I'm an artist learning coding to do gamedev, and I find this issue a lot too: Coders try to flex by being "clever" and push you to make the most "elegant" and fancy code using the most niche techniques. They use cleverness as some kind of metric of worth, when in reality, it'll be unlikely that others or even themselves will be able to remember what super clever thing they did when they look at it again 5 years later. (Also "nEvEr ComMeNt EvEr YoUr CoDe ShOuLd Be SeLf DoCuMenTing" lol) That crazy little electric rock-in-a-box is still gonna crunch that code down into machine-language so fast that saving two or three cycles with unreadable cleverness isn't gonna matter in the end. (Also some crazy coding-whiz types will legit look down on gamedevs for using an engine. Wat.) This hyper-competitive "I need to be better than everybody else or I'm nothing" sociology needs to die so fast. I am glad there's people like you, passionate and engaging about exploring the source-code of the universe. :)

Josh, thank you so much for this! As an artist especially, I find this to be so helpful. Listening to you talk about the orange tree immediately reminded me of Master Oogway’s teachings about the Peach tree in the first Kungfu Panda movie. I’m being honest with you - There are many people I’ve seen who promote their platform for their own selfish needs, but there are very few people I’ve seen who use their platform as a means to spread happiness and joy among the creators in our community, like you do! It’s amazing how connected we all are in this vast universe but also so beautifully unique at the same time. I really wish I could make it to the Lightbox Expo in Pasadena, but I live all the way in India and well…it’s a really long way from home 😂 I truly wish you the best and I’m so grateful for your talks, your thoughts and the way you express them. Thank you for an enlightenment, I was once lost cause of my obsession to be like some particular artists, I was once has my originality until friend of mine suggested to watch to an artist on RUclips and so on I'm obsessed want to create art like him, it such a reminders for me to go back to my originality, once again thank you very much.
Thank you. Seriously, from the bottom of my heart I think every time you share I get more and more confident and the want to share my work has gotten better. I love creating and I don't care about Ai anymore because I get to FEEL when I create. The process of learning and developing is my joy and nothing makes me happier to see others do the same. I'm currently too young to go to art cons across the country but in a year I won't have to dream about it anymore. I'm gonna do so much all because I love creation 😊❤
Thank you for sharing this thoughts!!! We spend so much time questioning our creatives desires due to what others might think or their perception of our work than we ended up not creating and let our happiness slip form our hands. This should be shown in art schools day 1. After watching a few other videos from you I'd like to say thank you for putting words on the mental side of being an artist. Like you know, sometimes we're way too focused on work itself that we don't take the time to reflect on the process of ideation. Happened to me for the past ten years and I feel I'm growing again now that I'm taking the time to put the pencil down and analyze... work, life, what happened recently, what do I like and don't like etc... Also I've studied art 20 years ago, had a nice career since, but always felt I didn't have a style of my own cause what I was taught is advertising and being able to mimic any style asked from the client. This angle pushes you to master a lot of technique but it suppresses your own voice in the long term. And it's only very recently (I'm 40) that I come to the realization that whatever style I'm doing, whatever topic or theme I'm painting... it's always going to embed a part of me whether I want it or not. My colleagues can recognize my work even if I don't tell them I did this or that piece. It's still a bit of a mystery to me but your explanation here did put an end to this reflection. We are unique by default, period. Anyway thanks again for sharing these very precious knowledge.
I'm incredibly proud of you over how you've grown from looking down on pretty instagram lady art to saying "be you". Because I love drawing ladies! I always have, it was hard being told that i was unoriginal for liking the things I like. I learned that I was okay, but you showing others that they are okay to? Is great.
Something I've always found both fascinating as well as amazing, is the fact that you can give two different writers the same prompt, tell them to write an essay using that prompt, and they will without fail create something vastly different from one another. Everyone has uniqueness to the point that nobody on this earth can ever be copied. Our minds are what makes us unique, and i love seeing those differences play out within the creations of artists. A great example of this is all the essays written within the SCP universe; different writing styles, and approaches to any given topic. Thx for putting this video out there, I'm sure there are many who need to hear it.
That was incredible. Thank you for that, I’ve been needing to hear that for a long time. I often don’t create characters, stories, etc. because I’m worried about it seeming too similar to something I’m inspired by, rather than just creating and accepting that there will be similarities. I’m gonna just start creating more solely because it makes me excited and not worry about it being similar to something else or having to be 100% original. Thank you, so much!

Thanks for this sir. Stay you.
Human beings are actually way more alike than people care to realize.
Namaste 🙏
PS : That Indian traditional attire (called kurta) really suits you 👌
Thank you for an enlightenment, I was once lost cause of my obsession to be like some particular artists, I was once has my originality until friend of mine suggested to watch to an artist on RUclips and so on I'm obsessed want to create art like him, it such a reminders for me to go back to my originality,
once again thank you very much.
Thank you for putting this out there. I needed to hear this.
Thank you very much I needed this
I'm gonna do so much all because I love creation 😊❤
vehemently agree!!!
Thank you for sharing this thoughts!!! We spend so much time questioning our creatives desires due to what others might think or their perception of our work than we ended up not creating and let our happiness slip form our hands. More people need to hear this, I myself needed to hear this, so again thank you for this beautiful message 🙏💖
We're just "one" within the "all".
But only when those "ones" gather together, can an "all" exist.
Right on time Josh, when the need for encouragement to stay the course. You espoused it so eloquently. Thanks you. Ms. K....
Thank you.
We are all creative oranges 🍊 🙌🏻✨
This is one of the most beautiful, motivational videos I've ever seen. 🙌 thank you so much for your time and all your amazing content!
Such a soothing voice and an extraordinary explanation, simple, but to the point! Thank you!!
Thanks for the inspirational boost Josh! Looking forward to meeting you!
@ergojosh, thank you for your encouraging words. Exactly what I needed to get rid of the rest of my obstacles. Thank you 🙏🏼
I absolutely love the message. ☺️
I low how this metaphor was completely unhinged AND it made complete sense AND I really feel so much better after hearing this from you. I wish I was not on another continent and could actually meet you at that expo! Thanky ou for using your platform the best way possible: the way you want to ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
I just feel like I’m never gonna get better rip
Look deep into that. Feel it. What would it be like? The worst case scenario. Then come back to the present moment. Every master has to come to terms with that at some point, you are on your way!
@@ergojosh i guess it was because of the lack of progress i had back when i was doing it casually. hopefully these coming years of education will guide me to become as good as you
Thank you for that... juicy analogy. Very on point!
Halfway into the video an I needed this :) thank you!
Thank you
This should be shown in art schools day 1.
Is great.
Thank you! I have been very judgmental to myself for the last months and this is just what i needed to hear.
Like the truths from buddhism, this grounds me with the idea of Anatta, that we are all connected to each other in some ways
"Ours is the wisdom to weave dream into reality, ours is the power to _create_ ."
that's why i love publishing under copy left, specially share alike, i want a world were everything is for everyone
This was such a great video. Thank you very much.
Thank you
Thank you so much 😊 for giving me some excellent encouragement to keep moving forward to improve
you have such a calm soothing voice i love listening to your videos
Something I've always found both fascinating as well as amazing, is the fact that you can give two different writers the same prompt, tell them to write an essay using that prompt, and they will without fail create something vastly different from one another. Everyone has uniqueness to the point that nobody on this earth can ever be copied. Our minds are what makes us unique, and i love seeing those differences play out within the creations of artists. A great example of this is all the essays written within the SCP universe; different writing styles, and approaches to any given topic. Thx for putting this video out there, I'm sure there are many who need to hear it.
Thank you Josh. I understood your message.
What amazing metaphors to help people get through imposter syndrome!
Thank you so much for sharing this
Love the message !!! 🩵
