I just watched a couple of your videos and they are easy going, informative, relaxing and absolutely stunning. Used to cruise in those same areas in the ‘80s in a Northern 35! Totally perplexed about the negativity in the comments though. What a world this has become 🤦♂️ Keep up with the great work and sail on through!
Not really. Perhaps it looks more like the big island which is more flat, but not Hawaii's smaller islands. The trees and surrounding landscape in Hawaii still look more tropical compared to Savary's. In this video though, I think it looks more like the bay of islands and milford sound in New Zealand than Hawaii.
In fact, Hawaii and the Salish Sea share a lot of history. Especially Salt Spring Island. There is amazing cultural influence from Hawaii. Much of that area was populated by native Hawaiians going back to the early 1800s. Port Townsend (in the US, but nearby) had a Hawaiian embassy. Lots of Hawaiian colonists in the US moved to BC when Oregon passed racist land ownership laws. Culturally and politically, Hawaii and British Columbia are surprisingly connected. Hawaiians were very active in the west in the early 1800s.
I can't believe the negative comments!! Your YT video is informative and well done and give people that will probably never have the opportunity to see these places an insight to the spectacular area some of us are privileged to live in. Please keep them coming and disregard the negative.
Back in Nov. of 2020 there was a massive landslide that brought down millions of ton of debries into a glacial lake which created a massive 300ft wall of water that emptied into Bute Inlet. Luckily, because of it's isolation, no on one was in the area at the time. There are some news reports that you can find on youtube that show what the valley below the lake looked like after the wall of water hit it, everthing is stripped away, it's just amazing.
Thanks for sharing. Admire your dedication to living on the ocean for so many years. We cruised a 30 ft maxxum in the Gulfs for 7 years but after 3 or 4 years of doing boat-only summer trips the lifestyle grew old on me and the boat maintenance became a burden. Still visit the Gulfs on bicycles every summer, including Hornby.
Beautiful!…I was born and raised on the Sunshine Coast (63-86)…living (retired) in Ontario now. The dream is to return to Powell River one day…just a dream 😴
@@chupacabra1765 My kids and grand kids are here in Ontario… tough choice. Plus my wife used her one Vito when we went back a few years ago to see if it was a viable option for retirement
Hi Shawn and Elizabeth. Glad to see you posting again. Love the BC trips as I live just in Chilliwack BC and we are former “stinkpotters” (43 Hatteras DC) from Toronto. Our boating days are finished and your videos give us a view of where we would like to be. A suggestion for your opening credits: After introducing yourselves and the puppies you should introduce “Freedom” so people know what the vessel is: ie: “MV Freedom - 43’ Nordhavn.” Keep those videos coming and Shawn's corny “dad jokes” too!
@@stevegilcrest8175 Great spot too. Not much protection at anchor unfortunately and no services. At one point there was an airstrip. It’s gone now however.
Hornby Island!!! I grew up in the Comox Valley (my Dad was in the Canadian Air Force, stationed in Comox). Vancouver Island is probably the best part of Canada! As a local to the area, I don't ever remember referring to Hornby as the "Hawaii of Canada"... LOL
Nice video of my boat haha we only beached for an hour or so at the bottom of the tide, easier to unload kids and gear. Usually can keep it upright not often it actually goes full dry but beats ferrying in gear. Was cool to meet you guys after watching many of your trips, safe travels!
I have realized watching Shawn conscientiously maintaining your boat, that I do not have the energy to own such a beautiful boat! Elizabeth, I would be remiss not mentioning how much fun it is to watch you stay fit! Next time you're in a bikini hand the camera to Shawn... As always, fantastic and informative video. Thank you. P.S. Expiration dates are for the weak...
It's not the tourists it's the realtors. Lived on the sunshine coast for 25 years and the last 10 years have seen a massive push from realtors to come and buy pushing real estate and rentals so high locals can't afford it. . Homeless folks living in the forest, traffic increase, not enough doctors, crowded beaches Greedy realtors have spoiled Powell River
Sorry but inflation is everywhere. You don't live in a bubble and Canada is for all Canadian citizens. Why don't the locals study to be doctors if theres a shortage of doctors?? Why don't the locals make income by building the roads and open beaches? Maybe educate yourselves to have a strong sunshine coast government taht can adequately meet the needs of the locals (ie: if the locals fail to go to school and become doctors, bring doctors from eleswhere!) Maybe realize the 1900's community needs to be updated to be able to fulfill the needs of the LOCALS TODAY, instead of blaming everyone else but yourself :) BC is the largest untouched wilderness area on the planet (Even Russia has more infrastructure in its forests LOL) with so much space you could fit 20 counties and enough coastline to be totally alone on the beach, and STILL have 80% of the land as untouched wilderness. People are going to come to the sunshine coast. You can either smarten up and adapt and make it benefit the community, or do nothing and be outnumbered by smarter more successful people that know how to build what they want. Edit: Realize that BC is one of the most resource rich places on the planet, with added potential if you use modern technology, its not in a war zone, theres no decline in population, the government doesn't send troops to opress any communities and already has the worlds BEST infrastructure. If the locals are ignoring all these world class opportunities and living in the forest, they are making some BAD choices for themselves.
@@proxyicarcus It's our government. Do you understand agendas and how they work? If not, I suggest you go look at the current conditions in North Carolina and your equally corrupt officials who are peeing themselves with glee that "their" land is being decimated and vacated by the locals so that they can finally get in there and mine the lithium for all those electric cars they are going to force on us. Sheesh, get a clue already.
Thanks both for posting such a beautiful video, I visited Vancouver island and the Rockies and loved the people, the stunning scenery, the seascapes, it was a trip of a lifetime!!. Tribune Bay is nice, crowded though. We spent a nice night there before going back to Henry Bay (Denman Isl.) where we heard the wind turned and all those boats in Tribune Bay were either loose or watching out for those that were from someone who showed up the next day .... glad we missed that. The wind in the Georgia Strait is always NW or SE.
It's amazing , you can pull up somewhere and there not be any insects then the next second your invaded by millions of the damn things.. lol . Thanks for the video.
I haven't sailed for years, but one of my favourite anchorages was surprisingly close to Vancouver. Find Pasley Island on your chart; sort of NW of Bowen Island - at the entrance to Howe Sound. A quiet little paradise and, IIRC, surprisingly protected given its proximity to the winds coming down Georgia Strait.
