  • In Baltimore, where gun violence claims the lives of hundreds each year, what is missing from so many young men is a solid foundation. The youth workers behind a program called Roca (Spanish for rock) aim to provide that grounding, by teaching alternative ways to handling the stresses of life in a challenging environment. As one Roca participant, a former drug dealer, tells "Sunday Morning" senior contributor Ted Koppel, "I came a long way, from nothing to something now."

It's about hope..and changing our thoughts that lead to violence..because an angry person without out a gun us still an angry person! The efforts being made here by these men IS WHAT IT IS GOING TO TAKE TO END ALL THE VIOLENCE! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Exactly… “changing minds” to be resilient, virtuous, and of good character is the solution to the root cause of violence, destruction and poverty. Changing or removing constitutional protections on the human right to tools of self defense is a red herring… down a very dangerous path!

As long as you are aware and know specific areas to go to, you will be fine. It probably would be better to travel with a local. It’s like going anywhere, try not to stand out and just blend in, walk confidently. Don’t think fearfully. Canton, Fells, Fed Hill, Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Locust Point, areas near large parks are all generally very safe.

If your statistics are correct, the curriculum should be improved. Most teachers are certainly not there to make a lot of money and do care about the children.

"guns" are not the problem. The mindset of these young men is the problem. I've been black all my life. I had a strong father figure, uncles, older cousins, who taught me how to resolve conflict without resorting to using a weapon. If you could magically wisk away every firearm on the planet, but not fix the mindset problem, they'd still use the most deadly tool around to resolve conflicts.

Initially I was gonna start off this comment by asking, how is it that so many immigrants, documented and undocumented come to this country with little or nothing and make use of the privilege to be here and just be able to work? But thats not the right question, those immigrants like myself had a solid foundation instilled by parents that cared about our well being. Those spankings and rebukes #discipline I got from my mother and father were not acts of abuse, but instilling basic fundamentals of right and wrong and consequences for your actions. Other methods of discipline are applied through different families, so its not one size fits all approach. But the key to making better people is that your parents need to be in your life. Now, honestly, that guy with 5 kids, I wish him all the best, but I hope this is not history repeating itself. Its sad though, through the eyes of an immigrant how so much opportunities are thrown away.

They need to reform our criminal justice system in the jails to hold these kids accountable when they're young make sure they don't get out until they have their life together jail needs to be more than a punishment these boys need a direction in life and shown how to make it happen and they don't get out until they do people should want to hire people that come out of the system that's the way we need to make it change for the better

"Lack of resources, opportunities"? Really? Always someone else's fault, and not the perpetrators. Perhaps a lack of supervision from parents, lack of discipline from parents, a lack of "wanting" to make something of themselves.

Can't legislate any of that. Do you want to mandate parents supervise their kids despite having 1 or 2 jobs? Would you like to mandate how parents discipline their children to your own liking? Or would you like to fund non-regressive social programs to actually address the issue instead of moralizing about it?

How about Home Life? How about Father's? How about Parenting? How about Soft-On-Crime policies that keep streets dangerous?

Agreed. Poor does not equal violent. It's the culture that has been built that leads to violence. At least someone is trying to put things in the right direction.

How are you going to mandate or change any of those issues? Your way is regressive and has 0 actual scientific evidence to back up any of your strategies. You want to punish not rehabilitate. You want to moralize not actually do anything helpful and kind. I don't want my time to be wasted by a c- high school graduate looking to exercise their limited power to frisk me because of my race. Because how else do cops identify these so-called criminals other than the way they've always used?

Perhaps you missed the point of ROCA? They are trying to address the issues of Home Life, Fathers and Parenting. Those pillars of the community need to be restored, and they're starting with this group. Ideally the graduates will teach their children, who will teach their children, and pretty soon the mindset of the entire community has been restored to what is should have been all along.
