Sabarmati Riverfront is a waterfront being developed along the banks of Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad, India. Proposed in the 1960s, the construction began in 2005. Since 2012, the waterfront is gradually opened to public as and when facilities are constructed and various facilities are actively under construction. The major objectives of project are environment improvement, social infrastructure and sustainable development.The Sabarmati river is a monsoon-fed river which has a total catchment area of 21,674 square kilometres (8,368 sq mi). The Dharoi Dam constructed in 1976 upstream of Ahmedabad controls water and protects from flooding while Vasna Barrage constructed in 1976 downstream retains water in the river along the city banks and diverts it through Fatehwadi canal for irrigation. The Narmada Canal, which crosses Sabarmati a few kilometres upstream from the city, is part of a larger canal network of Sardar Sarovar Dam. The canal can feed excess water to the river and maintains the level of water in the river which is retained through Vasna Barrage.

The first proposal for developing the riverfront was presented in 1961 by the prominent citizens of the city. French architect Bernard Kohn proposed an ecological valley in Sabarmati basin stretched from Dharoi Dam to Gulf of Cambay in the 1960s.[3] In 1964, he proposed an Integrated Planning and Development of Sabarmati Riverfront by reclaiming 30 hectares (74 acres) of land. The project was considered feasible in 1966 by the Government of Gujarat. Later he distanced himself from the project citing the difference between his proposal and the project being implemented.[4] In 1976, the Riverfront Development Group proposed an incremental approach for the construction. In 1992, the National River Conservation Plan proposed construction of sewers and pumping stations to reduce water pollution.[5][6]
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) set up the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL), a special purpose vehicle, in May 1997 funded by the Government of India with a seed capital of ₹1 crore (US$130,000) for the riverfront development. Environmental Planning Collaborative (EPC) led by Bimal Patel prepared the feasibility report in 1998. Initially the proposal was to construct the riverfront to cover a stretch of 10.4 kilometres (6.5 mi) stretch from Subhash bridge to Vasna barrage and to reclaim 162 hectares (400 acres) of the riverbed. In 2003, the project extended to cover an 11.25 kilometres (6.99 mi) stretch and reclamation of 202.79 hectares (501.1 acres) and was put on fast track. The project estimated to cost ₹1,200 crore (US$150 million) which was to be recovered by selling of a part of reclaimed land for commercial and residential purpose.[3][7] Bimal Patel-led HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad was roped in as the main architect of the project.[1] The project encountered several delays due to concerns regarding water level, flooding, rehabilitation of displaced slum dwellers and the opposition from the activists involved with slum rehabilitation.[8][9]

I mean i have been to many different cities of india but there is nothing like SURAT…wealth distribution is perfect. There might not be very ultra reach people here but there isn’t too poor people here. Infrastructure is constant. Crime rate is low (this might be the reason why it is not in the limelight). TAPI river is an asset & tons of aesthetic flyovers & bridges over TAPI. Humongous TAPI RIVERFRONT development aspect & people have so much purchasing power. Economic facilities can be avail humongously in riverfront model.

Almost every city has water bodies like lakes and rivers. But Ahmedabad has set example to the country that how it's made. Kankaria lake and sabarmati riverfront are one of their kind.
Is Sabarmati really Clean ? Do you know that the water that you see in that river is actually Narmada Water being wasted for some unwanted show of the City. Also ask all these so called Dharti Putras to cross Ahmedabad and take a bath in the Clean Sabarmati. I bet non will dare do it. Sabarmati till date is one of the most polluted rivers in the world.

Recent Updates: River Front will be expanded to Gandhinagar's GIFT city. Total stretch of the river front will be around 50+ Kilometre. It was Already Asia's longest River front but it will be expanded even more. Further, it is very well maintained, people do cycling down the aisles touching to River. Flower show, air shows, drone show, Kite Festivals, normal hanging out and roaming around,.. There's no another place like Sabarmati River Front. Plus surrounding is so clean that you will definitely wonder how do they manage this damn long stretch.. There are also several Ghats 9! River especially Chhat Ghat where our brothers and Sisters from UP & Bihar gathers every Year to celebrate Chhat festival. They have special arrangements so they can do their pooja without letting the River or Ghat spoil plus one special boat was in duty in River to collect all garbage or anything that goes out of the premises of pooja place. This River Front is gem for sure.
Bhai I’m from Mumbai and seeing the state of Mithi nadi and Dahisar nadi brings tears to my eyes. My mom was brought up in Dahisar and she told me that Dahisar nadi used to be clean when she was a child, so much so that they used to bathe in it. Today it’s basically an open sewer.

When I was in Hubli studying engineering in 2002, and I used to say I'm from Ahmedabad. They used to think Ahmednagar, Hyderabad, Moradabad, etc. As if it had no existence. Then when I came back in 2006, times had changed and my city had started gaining recognition. I'm a regular visitor of this since it's starting days of development..... So thanks for all the memories. 👍

Apart from Sabarmati, 3 more are proposed, Aji riverfront development in Rajkot, Tapi riverfront development in Surat and Vishwamitri riverfront development in Vadodara. Vishwamitri one is stuck as of now, other 2 are going on.. If completed all 4 big cities of Gujarat will have Riverfronts ie Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot.

That may never happen, Pune authorities are world's laziest and curropt people
Major issue will be flood management and waste water management in Pune. Topography of Pune makes it more challenging and costly. It will require creating more waste water treatment plants, widening river, creating spill canals and possibly re-aligning both rivers. It will require too much resources. So, I'll not be surprised if they just scrap the riverfront project. They should focus firstly on creating waste water treatment plant and additional small canals to carry water away from rivers. Treated water should be diverted away from rivers within city limits to meet the river outside city limits. Only after that the whole project will be a success.

Ganga cleaning needs more attention. If you compare it with 2005 vs 2022, it has improved, but i expected more.
I think tributaries leading to Ganga needs cleaning, else ganga will never get cleaned.

Tbh Ganga is too big river to just control with river front projects. To clean Ganga we need cooperation between all the states through which Ganga and it's tributaries travel. Now that is a big issue in India, most state even with same party in government don't co-operate that much well. And forget about co-operation if there are different parties in states.

It is like see link of mumbai where a saprate roads are constructed which leads to major traffic solutions.. 1 hr 20 min drive is now just 20 min.... and that too without the traffic..
Vrishabhavathi river in bengaluru has become a toxic dumpyard and is infamously known as kengeri mori(kengeri sewer). Government must redevelop and reclaim this.

you missed two important points. In 2001 because of large-scale destruction as a result of the earthquake, there were debris dumbed by the riverbed which was also cleaned up. Secondly, the riverfront has 2 roads on each side east and west which helps in travelling from one part of the city to the other very fast.

I am from ahmedabad east and i want to thank modi led bjp gov since last 27 years which made all Amdavadis proud of their city. This is the actual Gujarat model. today Ahmedabad has replaced Kolkata in terms of importance in India. It is India's first world heritage city, and actually developing in all sense.

All projects need money and support from people. There is a small entrance fee to enter key attractions at sabarmati riverfront. This has helped maintain the sites and also galvanized support among citizens.

Credit goes to then CM Modi for his transparent and fast execution style. During the early development years there was a flood and a major loss was reported, machinery and parts of the riverfront were also washed away. Everyone thought the project had sunk but the CM office was determined to finish it on time so they did. Riverfront already has multiple facilities already including spaces available for large gatherings like exhibitions, concerts, weddings etc. Even common people can book the venue at affordable rates. At night thousands of people gather at the riverfront and on weekends numbers can rise up to Lakh(Yes that many people). There are parallel roads on both sides of the riverfront from start to end which cuts the travel time by a few minutes as you can bypass multiple signals using them. Riverfront is an aspiration for every city to rejuvenate the lifeline of the city, the river.
Every city, every river in india deserve river front or Atleast clean river shore.. Don't restrict this to only metros..
And yes today we are capable to fulfill this demand, and for cleaning river in small towns not need hella money..

Sabarmati river also facing issue of eutrophication in some season due to water stagnation at Vasna barrage (dam). Because of this dam sabarmati river always looking fulfilled all seasons. Apart of this issue otherwise Sabarmati riverfront is amazing infrastructure program.

A key takeaway from this video is that we already know what to do so that our rivers are clean and river ecosystems thrive. Just don't throw sewage and trash in the river, and the river will clean itself. Like who would have guessed 🤪. It's the lack of will that has plagued us for decades. Also, I found it interesting that this project took around 30 years- it's proof that things take time and we need to be patient with development.

Small green island should be made in this wide river and more green and recreation spaces with activities like boating and fishing should be built. People should be interacting with urban spaces, otherwise it’s just water and concrete. Something what LA is doing to revive to its natural flow of its river, bringing back flora and fauna and also elevating the lives of people in the city.
And I feel sad for kolkata riverfront
Same potential is in Hyderabad’s Musi River. I urge Mr. KTR to start the similar project in our Hyderabad
