Fatima, if you water well and cover the seed with polythene as I did, then you probably will not need to water for 3 to 4 weeks, just pop your finger onto the surface of the soil now and then to see if it is damp or dry. Michael, if you kept your seed dry for a year and they germinated, you must have kept them in a very good environment because this is unusual---well done
Thank you!Wonderful advice Clive. Will follow your advice and fingers crossed, i hope to see some sprouts. I love your channel but was wondering if you could include tips and advice for people living in the tropics. Stay blessed!
Hi Ahmad, no, if you cover them now with gritty compost and leave them in a cool/cold place, they should be fine. The critical time is if they have just started to germinate on the surface and they dry out. Good luck Clive
Hi Mr Groves those were some clear and concised instructions. However, i have had 2 failed attempts at germinating violet seeds. Right here in sunny singapore, we do not have winter so i have tried to mimic winter conditions for the seeds by sowing them in damp peat moss in the fridge for 3 weeks, thereafter sowing them out of the fridge with our ambient temperatures which could hit a high of 30degree celcius in the day or lowest 25degree celcius at night. Would very much appreciate your valuable input. May need to give up hope on growing violets here in singapore altogether.
+Josephine Wang Hello Josephine, I think that your problem may be that your seed does not like going from very cold to very hot, they need a gradual progress to a warmer climate, in fact if it was possible to raise the temperature in your fridge slightly after about a month, I think your seed would be best left in the fridge to germinate and importantly always use fresh seed, it is unlikely that a general seed merchant would have fresh enough seed. Fingers crossed for you if you are going to try this one more time. Best Wishes Clive
Just ordered seeds, they will arrive in late February, zone 4, we are in deep and cold winter. Going to attempt to stratify in fridge? 4 to 6 weeks. Can I put them in a baggy with some compost and then into fridge? Outside planting season is mid May with protection or end of May.
hello thankyou so much...exact info I was trying to gather. Im in WI in the US..... this is something ive been thinking of for a long time.... I want to do this for Isabel my darling dog, who was taken by the Lords will on the 10th. I have her in the side yard outside the porch where she would sit on the leash and chew big sticks and enjoy the sun and conversation with me everyday...I have tons of plastic flowers surrounding her grave and want to do this for us:)
thanks for the video, although its now nearly a decade old! What violets have their seeds to be harvest in august, i noticed my wild odorata from the garden / forest have big capsules like now in may?
my cheap Malaysian seeds germinate like firecrackers. but i need to know how long it takes for the seedlings to get big enough to transplant. i think they get noticeable in about two months. i use a flashlight to see if they germinate and they usually do. so is two months to larger leaves correct?
Hi Cathy, yes, it is best to prick them out into a seed tray when they have their first true leaves, so I am guessing that will be sometime in March, which is an ideal time to transplant them being the spring.
How would I grow them in Australia? I tried, and I watched your video about a year ago, and I got no baby violets, I did use fresh violet seeds, and I put them in the fridge as well because it doesn't really get cold enough? Do you have any advice?
I also haven't had any come up in the garden, and I have a lot really, I took some from my grandmothers after she passed away, and they've been growing in the garden, and they have millions of seeds, then I got some different types, a pink one, and the czar, and no baby violets from them either naturally so I did try to collect them in tea bags, and plant them. I have just bought another 15 varieties that have taken forever and pure luck to find someone who has lots of varieties. But I'm really wanting to have a many violets as possible.
Hi Clive, Love your video! I have one question. What is the block you use to tamp the seeds down? Is the tamping surface wood or something else? Thank you!
Hai, I'm very interested in african violets, but I'm wondering, if i can't get any fresh seeds, can i buy online dry seeds, will it works?and how fo u sow the dry seeds tq
Hello Noor, I am afraid African violets are not related to the violets we sell, so I am no expert on these, but I do not think that it will be possible to grow them from seed.---Sorry.

Hi, thanks for the instructions. What about watering the seeds? How often do you need to do it?

Thank you for saying so, appreciated.
Thank you. That was most informative. I appreciate your time and knowledge in making this video.

Excellent video and thank you!
I have needed violet seeds for planting. How can I get it?
That is a long time … I will try them.
Can I order seeds from you?
Could you make a video showing the variation in flower types from a single batch of seeds?
Very clear instructions - thanks very much.

When do you do this .?
Which month is better
I usually sow mine about September Heba, with fresh seed straight from the pod.
I kept seeds over a year 😕
Oof
Gracias por su video, muy ilustrativo
De nada.
Do you still offer the seed for sale? I couldnt find it on your website
What's in your soil mixture?
Hello, I use a general purpose compost but I add an extra 20% fine grit/sand to it to get good drainage.
