Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom. Working on my ~8 acre slice of heaven in Jackson Michigan to be a deer holding, mature buck holding & traveling habitat. I sincerely appreciate your help with the puzzle! Be safe, God bless.
Do you have anything specific about hunting down south? AL, MS, GA…not much farmland in my area. Lots of thick woods and swamps. hardwoods and some planted pines. Hunting larger parcels 50, 100 acres or more. Love the habitat videos. Thanks
Not a place for a tree stand as it will be gone in a week. There is a little of everything there, apple trees, think passable brush, a nice overgrown field. Probably gotta go a little further in for hopes of finding a mature buck, which in these particular Gamelands is few in number as it is heavily hunted in rifle.
Good morning Jeff! I sat last night but didn’t see any deer, most likely due to the wind. However I did see a nice bobcat and lip squeaked him into 6 yards. It made for some awesome video and a cool experience. Good luck tonight!
As usual, Great stuff, Jeff! I sat the other night in the oak stand and had a good 10 that stayed on the outside while some younger bucks strolled right in. Two nights later the same thing and he made his way further south into thicker autumn olives and then beyond me to the evening fields. I need to get out of the oaks and into the thicker cover to get this guy. Sure, he might slip up and stroll in, but unlikely. I'll be adding a stand this afternoon along tha path of travel. Thanks for the insight and refresher. After your visit 9 years ago, I know better, but sometimes we get lazy! Best of luck!!!
I see all these Facebook posts this morning everyone is there am stands in 40 mph wind gusts! I wonder how many bucks will get pushed out this opener weekend?
Got my biggest buck on super windy day at 3:00. Swamp edge in picked beanfield from the ground with longbow. 160" 10pt. He got so close I had to aim down. 100% heart shot @ 10'.
It depends if it's a high windafter a rain for a few days. Get in the tree! Some of the best hunting in my opinion. I've killed allot of nice bucks in windy weather. I missed a giant tonight 35mph winds at 5pm.
Very true Jeff you just never know if there across the street but they’ll be back I believe that too! It’s definitely a fact that deer cross roads and go into deferent pieces so by the time they back in the piece we hunt can be a day a week who knows but they always come back and go into there safe spot in each piece to bed like you said we’re not hunting bamby these bucks know each year we’re the food is and we’re the does are I had a great wind yesterday I seen 5 does 2 mature and three little ones that being said I won’t go back for a couple weeks when I know it’s game on and I only hunt public yes Jeff is right there’s plenty of good public land just need to find it yes it is very pressured here but it’s simple if you see stands that mature buck sees them too and it’s just not ethical to hunt next to somebody yeah a friend but don’t be that guy that walks up to your tree at 7:00 when you been in tree hour before light you see a stand go deeper in woods or just go scout another piece of woods but you will find a honey hole eventually just got to scout scout and scout but there out there another great video can only go up from this channel thank you Jeff hope you have a great day and stay blessed! 🙏
Jeff - looking for some guidance on how to approach one of my properties. It is an extremely high stem count swamp area where a good chunk of it may actually be too thick for what the deer like. It is certainly incredibly difficult to navigate as a human - there are lay down trees and blow downs everywhere that you constantly have to maneuver around and try not to make noise with. It’s about a 60 acre piece. Very wet and routinely gets flooded. Where do you even start with a property like that?
Please explain, the major food source is not a big field or open area, but a concealed food source in cover? Once this food source is found, you go back in layers from that?
As a bow hunter I tell people that archery is unique. Don't do it because it extends your season, do it because you love it! Stealth movement, scent control, camouflage, learn area inside and out. It's addicting if it is in your blood. All of these videos have relevance and for most in archery is just another blind sit waiting for the deer to get closer to the stand. I view it differently and often crossbow hunt during gun season. I try to move in on the deer/hog/turkey. I try to defeat the target game at their game. My favorite kill was a swamp deer I stalked up to 20 yards unnoticed from the ground. It wasn't a huge buck but the thrill and excitement of moving in unnoticed cannot be matched. Same with many hogs I have taken. Hogs are dangerous and that makes it even more fun for me. Tip: If you shoot something take note of where you shot it. Wait minimum of 30 minutes before you go to the spot. Find blood trail, slowly follow it to game.
What about hunting large plots of land without Ag? Most vids I’ve seen are based off ag food (corn/beans), what about just hundreds of acres full of woods and hay fields?
This is correct. The big 10 point I shot on November 8th was showing up on my trail cameras every 4-6 days. I got a picture of him on November 3rd, 5 days later at 6:45am, here he comes, he walked passed my trail camera coming to me and gave me a 15 yard shot. Game over.
There is a buck I’m seeing three to four times an evening on cam, and a few times in the daylight. If he’s showing up that much, can I assume I’m near his bedroom?
So the general rule seems to be- set up near bedding at dawn and food plots at dusk. I don't understand why a decent bedding area can't be camped at dusk, to bag a deer when deer would be LEAVING the bedding area. Is it because deer will often bed down close enough to the edge of the cover to see out, and will see you set up mid-late afternoon? What if the bedding area is fairly expansive?
Maybe you’ve already done this but can you do a deer/buck bedding video specifically for hill country? So many times in Winona county I see guy spook deer bedded hill side before they even step foot in the timber. It can get really tricky in my opinion.
Hi Primer...I have an entire Hills and Thermals Playlist with 21 videos I've created: ruclips.net/p/PLmV8IlexgmhdBUnMATu39a5uumtm8PlnP&si=M0mUZDILMnrqkx6j I also sell a hills and thermals web class that goes into great detail 😊
Do you have any tips on how to hunt in mid day, I’m a single mom and only have between 10am and 2pm while kids are at school to hunt and still trying to get my first deer. I’m also hunting public land and trying to figure out how I can get one. Also do calls work at this time of year and do scents work too or should I wait.
Dureing this time of the year that can be tough. 10-2 is the best time for november rut season. U would have to hunt very close to bedding maybe next to water source, and browse.
Definitely hunt hidden small food sources next to thick bedding areas. Hidden apple orchards or trees, oak flats, small food plots, etc. It's best if you have a non bedding area to approach from and blow your scent into...but those locations can be quite productive mid day, this time of the year...
It really depends on what state you are in and what public land. Public land deer get in thick when pressure is on but archery only areas provide less pressure because IMO archery hunters are for the most part very stealth and those that aren't can push a deer to you mid day as that is when most relocate for evening hunt. Don't over hunt one area and have a few food and water holes with stands that are quietly accessed or ground blinds. Most importantly enjoy nature while the kids are in school. It is God's greatest and most neglected serenity. I have worked through many life issues and never saw a deer from a deer stand.
Jeff and Dylan!! Give us some love down south (Bama), I know we have Great Dane size deer but we love it just as much! We ( well maybe I do) need some help. Seasoned rifle deer hunter giving bow hunting a try. I’m lost. No family or friends that enjoy the outdoors. Trying to manage 40 acres passed down from last family member. Do you have rates for consultation? Thanks for any tips anyone can offer. -JB
When your neighbors put in a few cows and their stuff is close to your stand(about 50 yards) and spooks deer away for a week or so and then they come back but only nocturnal, how long do you think it will take for them to come back in daylight? If they do at all?’
I would say it depends where u are at I've noticed deer adapt very fast I'm some areas especially populated areas. Propbaly take a while if u are out in no man's land.
I’m in rural Kentucky, I only have 40 acres, neighbor turned cows out in a field that borders my land, deer just moved out. They came to corn pile during night, but didn’t frequent my property again until he moved the cows.
@@kylen1922 I’m in small town but in the country and lots of cows around so I’m thinking they were just weary of the activity going on when they were cutting a few trees down to make way for the fence and now that they’re done with that I hope the deer will come back because there are other cows around here and they don’t seem to mind them. I’m hoping they will come back out to play lol
@@Hammerback0 dang it man I hate that. I hope these deer will come on back since there are quite a few cows around this area and the neighbors haven’t been back in the woods since the fence was put up a couple weeks ago so I’ve got my fingers crossed.
Where did it spook them too? And do you have access? Move the stand or get a ground blind and go to them. The fence line will make a great channeling corridor in the future. I have killed many deer on fence lines. The cows are no issue. They won't mingle but don't mind them. Who knows the work may have squeezed the deer closer to you.
Man the beauty of the patterns. Here in the Central Florida I love the challenge of the Green Swamp. Im currently going to try the mock scrape I learned from your video. Put up two last week. Archery opens October 27. I wont be out there until Nov 2. Got the cams on them and curious. I used vine as you do. After this video Im rethinking an area I found a cooridor yesterday in between three merging bayheads. It is only about 100 yards wide with spikes pf about 50 yards leading out from a middle which is the 100 yards. Out goes to open palmetto and and sparse pine. Im now thinking that the middle is a bedding area and not just movement corridor. So think i will sit on the three spikes coming out from the middle. I was hog hunting and went through it. Question- think its too late to establish a mock scrape on the lines coming out of each? Or should I wait and put them out in the spring? Archery starts 27 Oct then goes all the way through 29 January. Next is trukey season in the spring.
What if the bedding area is off your property and you don’t know where it is/aren’t able to find it? I’m hunting 40 acres and 30 of it is soybeans, I have a stand hung on the edge of the beans. I’ve only sat twice and killed my first deer with a bow a few weeks ago. It was just a doe but I have a decent 8 on camera I’d like to get but he only shows up after dark. I did see him on my first sit but it was 5min before the end of shooting time and he never gave me a shot I felt comfortable taking. Just not real sure how to go about catching him in the daylight
