That's the VW quality we need in the ID3/ID4 : nicer seats, better dashboard. Only the sliders for volume and temperature should be replaced by genuine buttons and then VW is back...
You are absolutely right. I just tried the ID3 and i was shocked by the poor quality of the interior for a 40k€ car. With options in the configuration i chose i was close to 50k€. For this price i want a nice interior, not something that reminds me of east Germany in the eighties.
As a day van alternative to the T6.1, I think it works. I don't see why VW aren't offering 'Beach' or even California variants considering they did something like that for their smallest van that was essentially a car too. Any family that test drives both the T7 and T6.1 back to back will choose the more comfortable vehicle. Not everyone wants a diesel commercial van as their family car and the slight compromise in interior space is worth it. I can't wait for the ID Buzz.
It's great that the rear passenger seats are on the same rail as the one in front of it, makes it so much easier to remove the rear seats by sliding them all the way forward.
This looks so cool and the interior also very well thought out. The dual tone color combo looks surprisingly neat, wonder why VW didn't offer this on other passenger cars, would be nice option for buyers ...
Not all passenger cars have such a pronounce and straight horizontal line. (Some WV cars offer a black roof, but that doesn't really count.) There is a T-Roc with a red roof on a white car. But I think the California T6 does the two tone a lot better than this new T7.
It is lost a lot advantages t5-t6 has , ground clearance ,cabin&cargo space, integrated safety belts into seats, sunshades on side windows, etc. T7 is more like Sharan replacement auto, or expensive alternative to PSA traveller-zafira life-space tourer vans.
Amazing, shape reminds me of the old ‘Mazda Bongo / Ford Freda’ from about 20 years ago that I use to import from Japan. Even the electric sliding door, sunroof, internal drop down tables all mounted on a 2.5L diesel Ford Ranger engine. And it cost less than €10k fully imported and had an electric pop-up roof and fridge / cooker in the back 👌🏽
Thank you for your review, as always really well made. I'm extremely disappointed with T7. I want to replace my Renault Grand Espace IV as it hasn't got much luggage space. It has however 7 sliding seats with integrated seatbelts. This T7 has a similar approach but totally messed up by excluding integrated seatbelts. I took my family (5 kids) and tried to settle in T6.1. It was awesome. Kids loved it. When I sit behind the wheel (I'm 189cm tall), then I adjust the 2nd row seat to the same hight person and then I move the 3rd row bench forward to make myself comfortable I'm left with quite big trunk. Kids don't need that much space so the trunk could be even bigger. And all that in the 4.90cm long car. Way bigger than in the 4 cm shorter (4.86cm) Espace. I was really surprised how well thought T6.1 was. I've been waiting with decision to go with T6.1 until T7 comes out. The only thing that makes me want T7 is plugin hybrid which I might be find useful on day to day basis and more space between front seats. That's it. The new table is useless for the 3rd row as it can't be open due to the seats in the 2nd row. If they could be set in the backwards position it would make sense. But due to the seatbelts in the pillar it's impossible to drive like this. The trunk size is disappointing. What's good in sliding seats in the 3rd row if the seatbelts are in the pillar? How will a 6-10 year old kid reach the seatbelt if the seats are moved forward? No AWD? The other car I have is Subaru XV and I don't want the family car to be FWD. I want to go skiing with peace of mind it's not me whose gonna block the road due to snow or slippery conditions. I want to park on grass in the camp site and not have to pray it doesn't rain and I might get stuck there with 5 kids :-).
the confusion is from using the famous name multivan, this is not the replacement for what you think, the bigger multivans (8 seat versions, commercial versions, california, etc) will still be built in a bigger new different platform than this, its just that the T is branching to many platforms and uses, the full electric version will also be built in a different platform from the others. although it needs to be said you re talking about this new version without trying the long version 🙂( remember that this version alone has two lengths, a short and a longer one). here they re just the famous name multivan for the new replacement of the sharan.
Flat floor offers so much flexibility for the seating configuration. I actually love this change. Plus Third row seats are more comfortable now because the seats are higher from floor - same as second row.
Very nice review Thomas, well done on getting hold of these T7 models so early on. It will be interesting to see the California conversions of this vehicle and whether Californias remain as commercial or retail. For now I will carry on enjoying my lovely Cali Coast T6.1 !
@@alfrredd people blame Volkswagen too fast, skoda didn t even want to make suvs until Volkswagen forced them and its now their biggest seller, and MAN is making commercial vans. its with Volkswagen that we also have insane Lamborghini suv s
Just a note: 1990 onward General Motors U-body MPV's / minivans: Pontiac Trans Sport / Chevrolet Lumina APV / Oldsmobile Silhouette. Same five individual removable seats. Three in the middle row, two in the third row. Any could be folded to form a table. For instance; the center one of the second row.
I think it's about time to have a full electrc van/bus. We bought the Chrysler Pacifica electric hybrid because we wanted an electric car and needed a van for my mother who needs a wheelchair and a portable lift with takes up a lot of room. It's the only van that is electric hybrid which gets great mileage. Can't wait to see how this bus looks when it is completed. Love the idea of the different seating configurations and the moving console with the table looks great. Hope those features are in the final production of the bus. Our next car will be an all electric car. Would love to get the VW Bus.
A lot of cheap plastics throughout, and no damping on the storage bins, but the modularity of the captain's chairs appears to be a very useful item. Do any of the sun roofs open for ventilation? I really don't see the purpose of deleting the sun shade, especially here in California where it can turn the van into an over really fast. This van is going to need a powerful A/C with all that glass. The console trays in the rear are a clever idea. I hope they have USB ports. Finally, the trays on the rear seat, however, need to fold down not pull up.
I'd say 90-95% a sound NO WAY! US haven't got the now midsize T-vans since the T-4 or Eurovan (at that time they were imported from Germany and they started > U$40K).
The more I think about it the more sense it makes to split the model into a large practical MPV and a commercial vehicle. In the UK at least most T5/T6 Caravelle/Multivans were used as taxis. And I guess the commercial version will also be available as a nice passenger van too?
Great review Thomas, so apart from this passenger MPV, are VW going to offer two versions on the commercial platform for the California one hybrid/diesel with Ford and one electric only (ID buzz).
Great seating options, very reminiscent of my 2007 Renault Espace, also with a full length panoramic roof. Nice though. Just £40,000+ more than I paid for my old Renault. If I had the cash, I'd certainly be interested in an upgrade.
Hello Thomas, is it possible to put 3 seats in the second row an 2 in the third row? My question is regarding traveling with 5 and having enough room for luggage. I have a Sharan and was thinking about selling it for this one, but two seats in the second row, doesn't suit me... Regards!
Current Sharan you can fold all seats in the back to get your bike in. Then unfold to get back to 7 seats. Easy. New set up is a bit going backwards and less flexible. Like old Renault Espace. What if you want to take your bikes on a long journey but still have need for 7 seats at journeys end? Easy in current Sharan. But you are stuffed in T7 as you have had to leave seats at home.
I understand that they use the MQB platform now. But it makes the car so unattractive with it's huge frontal overhang. It doesn't really look like a bus anymore but a huge van with a long nose. I would still go for the T6.1
@@mart_en for camping and lifestyle this will be better because it is more versatile with the MQB platform. The advantage of the old one is the heavy duty suspension, underbody protection, upgraded electric generator, higher ground clearance. This car is just for carrying as many people in comfort on the highway but it's not as robust as the commercial platform. Everything has pros and cons.
Er sieht sehr schick aus, irgendwie sehe ich darin die Studie des Microbus von 2001. Ab wann ist er denn zu konfigurieren ? Das Glasdach gefällt mir sehr gut, lässt sich das öffnen ?
Best of even the German reviews. Thanks. Looks like you can have 8 single seats..... even if not officially allowed to. Dubious idea with the fixed seat belts in the c and d pillars. Should only need them in each seat, but they are missing in the outside seats. I will measure the inside of my t6.... The advantage of the t6 is that it is huge inside and short on the outside... same lenght outside as a small estate car
Hi there. I have a Transporter T6 without any option apart from an automatic gearbox and this is exactly what i was wondering. Do you have the exact same space in the back if you get rid of the extra seats.
Hi Thomas, great review as always. Is it confirmed the T7 will not come as California/camper edition and continue on the commercial 6.1 platform? I was so hoping for a PHEV California.
It seems to be a good replacement for my Sharan soon. I only hope that VW will keep this nice dashboard and won't replace it by the owful one from ID series.
Great video. Thank you. I am guessing you could turn this into an 8 seater, if you swapped out the table, and added an extra seat? In the back you would have two rows of three seats.

@Adrian Beiderbecke lollllll i dont think so
Since it's based on passenger car platform, it's more of a successor to Sharan than to Multivan.
Should be available in one single colour as well. With or without metal strip in between.
Exactly 🙂

This is another quality and fantastic review!
Looks cool. I prefer the outside of the T6.1 especially the ground clearance.
That's gotta be the nicest van ever!
I could definitely see it as a great CamperVan as well 👍
The biggest thing it’s missing, I think, is the ability to stow the seat inside the vehicle like the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Pacifica
