I really love how expressive the fashion is in this comic. Before Pereshati gets married, she always has her hair down and dresses in youthful, spring-colored dresses. After she joins the Lapileons, she adjusts her wardrobe to match their austere preferences. Her hair is always up, she wears dark, conservative clothing, and she looks more mature. All the Lapileons dress this way. Her outfits are always stunning. Dodolea's wardrobe also sets her apart. Her gothic lolita-esque style is so different than everyone else's outfits that it makes her even more unsettling. Everyone on Webtoon should take notes on this artist!

On that topic one thing I noticed is that every frame that both Pereshati and Dodolea are in there in opposite colors like the first time we see the fourth princess she's in dark purple while Pereshati's in a light sage. Thought this was interesting because it really shows how completely different the characters are from each other. Pereshati is calm, composed, and a genuinely kind person and the fourth princess is obsessive, crazy, and shows quite alarming psychological behaviors. Another thing is that like what @snailcall mentioned Pereshati starts to match the family colors and outfits which makes Dodolea, who always dresses opposite to what Pereshati does, stand even more as an enemy and outsider.

more seriously, if a westerner tried to write smth like milaowm, there would be only a few layers of separation from the culture: time period, , existence of magic, etc. korean authors have a whole other harder-to-navigate level of separation above that, which also complicates everything below it. and of course the names are written in korean characters, which leads to shit like 'theodore' being translated as 'therdeo' and 'dahlia' as 'dodolea', because there's no 1-to-1 translation of these names in korean and back again lol

I also love that Pereshati doesn't instantly burn every single bridge with her step-mother. She questions herself, especially when her mother starts manipulating her with crocodile tears and protecting her from hot tea with her hand, burning it. Even though she witnessed them gleefully murdering her, she still had doubts. She still wants her mother's love. Her step-mother was so kind, gentle and loving. Surely she can't be that horrible? Surely Pereshati has made a mistake somewhere? Surely her mother still loves her and always did? Surely she didn't kill her just for money? Right?
It's so realistic. Even when children have been abused their whole lives, a lot of them still want a relationship with their parents. They want to believe that they're actually good people. Even if they know logically that's not true and they should stay far away from their abuser, their emotional side wants to cling onto the parent.
Same here with Pereshati. She knows her mother ruthlessly killed her, smiling while doing it. She knows she can't trust her. But that thought clashes with all her childhood memories where her mother was good and loving. She knows she has to cast her mother aside but it's very hard to do that.
And when she finally gets a win over her mother, finally gets revenge... She doesn't smile, laugh or celebrate. She is stone faced until finally crying once the situation is over. She's not happy about any of this. She's hurting and wishes it hadn't come to this. That her mother was the loving facade she was putting up.
It's so good, so realistic, so heart wrenching.

I think another lovely thing about the story is that while Pereshati may be young, she and the other adult characters actually act like adults. Pereshati isn't blushing and flailing like a high school girl all the time - when she interacts with Celphi, she's not JUST nice and encouraging. She actually takes on responsible duties like picking him up and dropping him off places, she creates boundaries in the process of raising him, and discusses decisions and parenting with her husband. She doesn't sneak out behind everyone's back to secretly build a business or ask the information guild stuff, but instead tends to talk big decisions over with her husband.
This makes their interactions delightful, because from the beginning, it's this constant gentle influence from her to tackle life as a team. And he does his best to return that energy, especially in public, and isn't just stubbornly refusing to share with her out of shame or such. He is trying to balance that teamwork with the trust and responsibility his family puts in him.
But they both always do try to approach that issue like actual mature people, and that's really pleasant. There are still moments when that communication really buckles under the pressure of their circumstances, but that depiction of their love slowly growing from the fertile soil of actual teamwork is really wonderful.

    • @lavendermarshmallowplant3229

Another thing about Pereshati's business is that it also makes sense why Pereshati wasn't open with relaying every detail of her business towards Therdeo when it was struggling. By this point, the leads are friendly, but they haven't confessed yet and are still under the assumption that they'll still divorce once the contractual period ends--so Pereshati doesn't want to be too reliant on her status as the Grand Duchess because then she'll deal with the fall out once she loses that title and the privileges that came with it. Apart from that, she also feels a sense of misguided guilt that her husband and family have helped her too much for someone who's only staying temporarily, and she at least wants to maintain independence once she leaves the Lapileons and presumably takes on her duties as a Countess.

There’s plus sized women, women with square jaws, and they have various heights. It’s a lovely touch and they aren’t villainized.
I also just appreciate the touch that there are gender biases and roles in the world, like them not wanting to appoint a woman as the head duke as mentioned by sister in law. However, women do hold positions of power (like the reverend, the sister in law was duke for a short time, the crowned princess who has lovers due to her penchant for pretty men, etc)

When we see snippets on why therdeo is uncomfortable about dodolea or woman in general,we see the flashback that shows us why. Honestly, dodolea is giving me freaky vibes but not to this extent. Its even disturbing how she seems so so obsessed that she even drugged therdeo and almost SA him. Its just so surreal and so scary actually.

one of the things I love most about this webtoon is how they explored Pereshati's relationship with her step-mother. I love how nuanced and real it is. Despite knowing the terrible intentions of her step-mother, she still felt conflicted about her feelings. Yes, she felt anger and rage towards her step-family but it couldn't erase the fact that they were once her family. The webtoon showed flashbacks of Pereshati as a child and her step-mother, treating her as if she's her own child, playing with her, laughing with her. She was once her mother that she loved so much. Pereshati didn't immediately forget everything about her step-family. She still treated them like her own family, after all. I love how the characters feel so human and not just some tropes or caricatures. They didn't make the step-family be a plain cartoonish villain that doesn't have anything on their mind than do bad

10:36 my best assumption is that by the time that year is up, she can either
    a) escape even further out where her step-family can't reach her
    b) pray her step-family will have found other people to use so they leave her alone
    c) ask the lapelions to provide her with protection in case she doesn't believe even the marriage can stop them from killing her
    or
    d) make them believe that she still has the lapelions on her side without staying too long with them (1 year is enough for the family to assume that she still has connections with the family and short enough that she can just try to endure it if she really doesn't like them)
cause let's be real, ex-wife or not, pereshati would still be assumed to have connections to the lapelion family if she stayed there for a long period of time. who's gonna want to kill her if they don't know exactly what happened in her marriage (mainly because all of the lapelions act in near secrecy)

Normally it would be an absolute, complete annoyance for it to take 100 chapters for these two idiots to kiss (lmao) but in this story in particular it's done so well. It's slow burn and it makes sense for a lot of different factors. First, that there is a genuinely extremely interesting mystery in the main story that involves pretty much every member of the Lapelion family that keeps you WELL occupied during those 100 chapters, and second, the fact that Theo is such a cold and distant character who's an absolute brick wall to try to interact with, that it genuinely takes that long for him to slowly remove those bricks one by one and begin to see this strange woman who he agreed to marry for convenience in a completely different light. And it feels worth it to compare the stone cold expressionless scary man he was in the first few chapters, with how vibrant and expressive and human he is in the most recent ones. It feels like you watched him grow this whole time, and you're proud of him.

Something subtle I love about this Webtoon is how Pereshati’s wardrobe changes. She goes from very girlish clothing with soft colours and full, frilly skirts with ribbons in her hair that’s often down to wearing usually darker shades of fabrics and keeping her hair pinned back. No shade to her former style, I think it’s cute (that’s actually another thing I like about ‘In-Laws’: compared to a lot of these types of stories, where the protagonist wears such over the top clothes with so many jewels and frills they look ridiculously gaudy- Peri’s clothes have always been detailed but never ott) but the way her wardrobe matures as she herself matures and becomes a respectable lady and mother over an innocent young woman who just lost her father is some quiet storytelling I really love.
Also she looks absolutely fire in those dark dresses and her pink hair really compliments that.

The moment I knew this was a good comic was because of a panel in season one. I’m pretty sure it’s from on of the earlier episodes. There is just this panel of Therdeo walking down a hallway but it’s dark. Not natural dark, but as if there was this heavy shadow over him. It showed his inner conflict and trouble of what he needs to do and face. I remember being very surprised that such a panel was in the comic. Nothing was said, no sound effects, no inner monologue telling us his thoughts. Just him walking down a hallway. But it said so much, and I knew right then I would love this comic.

I think the foundation of the plot is shaky on purpose since it's a rashly made decision by a Perry that's still in a state of confusion and nobody to confide in.
The marriage was never a solution to her issue but a stop-gap to give her time to plan what to do and learn how to manage her inheritance. She already has doubts when she accidentally died.
I'm guessing the 1 year time frame was long enough for a marriage to a stranger and she didn't think the grand duke would agree to a longer period of time considering the public family history.

  • @youshouldprobablystudy

i think the main reason she wanted a 1 year contract is because she needed urgent protection from her step family and boyfriend and also needed time to grow herself. She said she isn't capable enough to be the head of her household and that's why she needed help from the laplieon to protect her while she studies and learns to be independent and potentially continue her father's business. So after the year had ended, therdeo had already escaped his marriage problem (well, that's according to pereshati..though im not sure if this would actually work cuz they time travelled and many variables came along with it like Doodolea) anyway he was supposed escape the marriage and pereshati would get his protection in return and once she's capable enough she'd start her own business. This has been mentioned throughout the comic in small fragments we just needed to piece it together.

  • @TessuDraws
    @TessuDraws 3 месяца назад +4

I'm so happy you made a video about this comic. I paused this after you told Therdeo kills her a second time ON PURPOSE and went to binge read the comic myself and I agree with you on all the praise. The silent story telling especially caught my eye, it was so masterfully done! As a comic artist, it really made me study the panels and hope to make something similar in the future, to speak more with the art rather than the words.
I'm also happy that Therdeo took time to warm up the Pereshati. There's so many manhwas where the male lead is supposedly a cold hearted, murderous war hero but then they fall for the mc almost instantly. Here, Theo actually stays cold and distant for a long time and even after it's clear he's starting to catch feelings, he STILL keeps distant to Perry because he doesn't know how to socialise. He grew up isolated from society because of the curse, he's only been surrounded by his family who are just as cold and distant as he is. So I'm glad that actually reflects in his actions. Finally there's an actual reason for why the characters have poor communication from time to time and it doesn't just get fixed with one incident. He keeps being distant and quiet. He gets a little closer to her, then withdraws again, leaving Perry confused about their relationship. It makes sense!!
    God I love this comic!

The author found a way to make the romance work really, really well. Because unlike a ton of manhuas the romance moments between the characters aren't just cute fan service. Many times they happen when the pair is having serious conversations about the main plot. Or personal issues they're dealing with, and confiding in the other about them. And the writer uses the romantic tension between Therdeo and Pereshati to intensify the drama of the main mystery of the story even further. Because the romantic attraction he has for her now causes him to hide things from her and not communicate in order to keep her happy in a little bubble of ignorance, causing her to become frustrated with this (and him) and seek the answers he's not telling her on her own.
In my opinion, this writer and artist is an absolute genius for how they made the romance between these two both feel so realistic, awkward and sweet, and serve an actual purpose.

I just re-read it (up to chapter 100) and every development; every story beat felt completely earned. All the relationships (platonic and romantic) feel so real and genuine. Plus, this webtoon even has the main character reflect on the privilege she has as a high member of society, reflect on failures and when it's okay to ask for help, and she even holds onto anger and resentment toward people for more than a chapter. If you haven't read it, it is currently my golden standard for webtoons right now. They take the rule of "Show don't Tell" so well and know how much information to give and when.

To do with the marriage contract- I think the reason why it was only for 1 years was for 2 major reasons
    A. When the contract starts she's shown to be scared of the duke and well yes she could ask someone she doesn't what to ask her normal social circle for fear of her step-family finding out and being judged for doing that since she's dating Schiff
    B. I think her plan to protect herself was to set up system and force them out of the main family house and eventually dampen there influence within the family she didn't at the start of the comic want to go scorched earth on them she just wanted to stay alive and keep her inheritance. She could with hard work ( as we see her doing) stop them from Targeting her inheritance or her life by virtue of no longer being in active contact with them

Also for the decision of marriage for a year, I believe it was stated in some chapters that perry married theo so she can stay away from her family and learn to manage the countdom, she also wanted to form connections that will help her after the year, she believed if she learnt to manage the countdom herself she wouldn't have to depend on her step family anymore. Which makes this even more sad cuz this implies in her past life she really depended a lot on her family and had planned to learn about handling the countdom together with them

There is nothing wrong to use one or two tropes in your story, but every time I see or hear about a romantic webtoon/novel that was written online, there are awlays the same things and most of them are things I define as "fanfiction tropes", which are not bad but need to be more elaborated for orginal material since we don't know stuff about the world/character unlike in a fanfiction.

I think why it ends up handling the romance and plot so well is that the author in their post season 1 notes, says the romance isn't the first priority of the story but the family dynamics. They wanted each character to have a goal, even the crown princess gets one. The romance isn't also smooth sailing after they confess too. Their pasts and lives still end up conflicting.

It feels like you watched him grow this whole time, and you're proud of him.

I know this is uber uber late, but to answer your question as to why Pereshati wanted just one year of marriage- it's because she just wanted to buy herself more time and to keep herself away from her family who would likely try to kill her in that period. Given his violent reputation at the time, it is extremely unlikely Pereshati WANTED to stay married to him in the long term.
EDIT: Oh, also it's just as likely because she knows the duke isn't too interested in marriage either, and keeping it up for just a year would sound like a better deal than keeping the timing indefinite. If you remember, there was a moment where the Duke asked if she was willing to extend the contract-likely so he'd have more time to run tests on her- and she (internally) very adamantly refused.

    (TLDR at the end)
i JUST commented on the Hello Baby video how, on like, 34 seconds or so into the video, there's a small segment of webtoons that have been recommended to you, and I paused and commented about each one.
And I said how I've been avoiding "My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me" because the synopsis sounded SUPER bland. (The name of the comic is also super generic, so it doesnt rlly help it either).
But you just convinced me to read it, thank you for not telling the whole plot as well! As I was watching, I was getting invested, and was wondering if I should stop watching to not get spoilers
I'm trying to write my own comic, and everything you said is what I've been trying to study to do on my own comic, especially giving screen-time to every character and making them feel human, like normal people who exist in the world, without overexplaining things (As I tend to rant like in this comment, sorry)
I've read comics all my life, but i only started reading webcomics a few months ago, so I've struggled with figuring out what is considered good or not amongst the most popular "types" of comics (isekai, revenge, villainess is the mc, etc.), and how the writing and pacing works, so I'm really thankful to channels like this one, that review, give critcs, advice, etc. Before the Baby Tyrant video, I had never noticed how many onomatopoeias are used randomly on these comics. (Also probably because so many stories are so similar it feels like brainrot, so I've got to the point I'm just basically skimming through many comics)
Out of the webtoons I've read so far, I'd say my favorite "romance" ones are 'Surviving Romance', 'The Makeup Remover', maybe 'No Outtakes' but that was one of the first ones i read ever, so I dont remember much of it now. I guess it's because they're more unique than all the other "set in europe-like country on the 19th century" or something like that, so they stand out more. If I had to pick a comic like that though, I guess I'd recommend 'The Remarried Empress', but I struggle on telling apart what's good or not on these genres that are overdone.
    TLDR:
I've been avoiding My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me because the synopsis and the title were super generic, but this video changed my mind, and I'm gonna give it a chance and try to use it as reference for my own comic I've been planning out.
I'm somewhat new to webcomics, so I struggle telling what's well-made and what isn't, so channels like this are both entertaining and helpful for me. I really enjoyed 'Surviving Romance', 'The Makeup Remover', and 'No Outtakes', and if I had to pick one of those "europe-like, 19th century" comics, I'd pick 'The Remarried Empress', but I do have a harder time picking out what's good especially in overdone "genres" like isekai, villainesses, revenge and karma.

yes, i didn't know how much i needed someone talking about how wonderful this webtoon is, it´s without a doubt one of my favorites, from the art style to the adaptation of the story, is simply a masterpiece and something that i find incredibly well done is the way in which the feelings of the main characters are transmitted throughout the story, without forcing anything like it took us over 100 chapters for them to finally talk about the feelings they have for each other AND IT FEELS BELIEVABLE because you witnessed everything that had to happen for them to reach that point and conclusions and I love the story for it. Honestly I would love to see in the future another video of you talking about more things that you liked and enjoy about the story, spoilers included and all. Greetings from Mexico and sorry for any error c:

Also, I would love to know your thoughts on Eleceed. I feel that it's quality has dipped a fair bit, but was strong in the beginning. I'd love to know your thoughts!

I am so incredibly excited that my love for this comic seems to be echoed with a huge passion. It’s honestly so brilliant and I can’t wait to hear another person gush about it! I adore Pereshati as a lead so much, she’s composed, responsible, and brilliant to the bone and yet quietly and consistently wins over every single (sane) Lapileon she meets by just pure compassion and her steadfast reliability as a person. I love how Theo is a man with a clearly damaged past who while NOT cruel to her, is emotionally indifferent to her when they enter their contract, and yet slowly but surely Perry continues to silently wear down his walls with just her presence and support. The way he looks at her is something that I cannot get over, and the artist has such a mastery of silent expression. I have never seen a webcomic with better emotional telegraphing in such a genuinely beautiful way. I can’t get enough of it and I hope all of these characters overcome their own challenges as we continue

Her family can't kill her unless she marries the dude , because if she dies without husband or kids , her inheritance goes to her uncle, and also she wasn't looking for revenge, she was gonna let them live in her estate but she wanted to make a business in this year that would support her living elsewhere .

A little review i cant forget in regards to this manwha is the fact the family has so much love to give, but cant really show it due to the curse. They dont need the mc to show them how.
But that doesn't diminish the importance of the mc either. Rather, they're both giving each other love and healing together.
I love it when stories give equal opportunities for every character to grow. This manwha is really a rare gem ❤

I read the comic because of this video, so thank you for introducing it to me. I'd seen in on webtoons before but the whole time reversing marriage revenge thing is a genre I've long since grown bored with so I just ignored it. But no, this one is actually really good! I really appreciate the lack of leading dialogue in thoughts. For example, when Pereshati returns home to hear that all the servants are on leave, there was no, "The last time that happened was when [spoilers]." There was just the understanding that the servants all being on leave was a bad thing. I that was so refreshing to me

I really enjoyed this vid!!! Looks like I have a good manhwa to read☺️
Also PLEASE read ‘Kill the villainess’ it’s honestly one of my favorites due to the fact that it doesn’t follow the usual formula regarding the trope of being reincarnated into the villainess of a game/novel.
