A lot of the time, the crew is more valuable and expensive than the tank itself. The tank alone is a hunk of metal with a gun, and the crew make it actually- work. The crew also require training, lots and lots of hard training, to operate the tank expertly, which takes time and money. Which is why we use blowout panels.
I have a bad news for your proud american ass: M1 has ammo below the turret without the blowout panel and guess what? Its located exactly in the place where the Russian autoloader is. That makes the M1 less survivable since Russian tanks have lower profiles and are harder to hit😂

Only at artillery dropped right above the door panel to the ammunition bay will blow an M1 with a turret cook off. If not the chances are almost nil due to the strong Chobham 2 armor and the nature of APFSDS sabot to be more of a penetrator that causes internal spalling. If the barrel did not load HE, chances are damage to crew are localised with at most 1 or 2 KIA in worse case scenarios
It wont have the same effect if the round pen the storage compartment and the hull, fire will seep out the entry hole of the storage compartment into the crew
