I think the meaning of "Sakimori " is to be the first to fight and die for the homeland. coast guard is not it will be Marines、 Thatt i think ”Will the mountains die?” This question may express the despair that something that seems eternal may come to an end.
I'm pleasantly surprised that you responded to this song! Even though the lyrics are sad, it's been my favorite song since I heard it as a child. This song was written and composed by Sada based on an ode written by an unknown Sakimori soldier, which was published in the oldest collection of Japanese odes compiled around the 8th century. Sakimori means Defenders. They were people who were separated from their families from eastern Japan, conscripted, and sent to the front line of the war in northern Kyushu, which was the westernmost part of Japan at the time, without knowing whether they would be able to protect their country or return alive. A producer who asked Sada to compose music for a Russo-Japanese War movie entrusted him with the theme, and Sada chose this ode and created a song that expresses universal human sadness that transcends time. A Ukrainian female singer who was no longer able to live in her hometown due to the Chernobyl nuclear accident has also covered this song, so if you're interested, give it a listen. (Natalia Guzyi, "Sakimori's Song")
Thank you for picking up this song. I am Japanese. Let me explain a little. "Sakimori" was coast defending soldiers 1000 years before in Japan, because of preparing the invasion by China dynasty at that time. But here, it is describing the Japanese solder during Japan-Rusia war during 1904-1905. At that time, it was so difficult to get Lüshun, because of well-designed defending preparation by Russian army. At that time, only way to win it for Japanese soldier was just "charging by sacrificing the lives". Of course, all charging Japanese soldiers knew about that they will die soon. But they did, and resulted what they thought.. Singer Masashi Sada is singing the feeling the mind of Japanese soldiers, who were about to go charting to Russian position, which had a lot of excellent machine guns at that time. Back to beginning, most of "Sakimoti" could not come back to home again, so they left some lyrics, which described the love for their family that they could not meet again. Singer Sada connected the feeling of 1000 years before "Sakimori", and Japanese soldier in Japan-Russia war, because both of solders were sharing same sad feeling beyond the time difference..
Mr.Sada composes sad songs that make you feel dark. However, the concert talk is interesting. Customers like his talk. When he starts singing, the customer goes to the bathroom. A CD containing just his talk is on sale. The world is wide, but he is the only singer like him.
I hate that this old clip with the half baked translation, some of it is just plain awful, has become the official translation for so many reacting on RUclips. Better to Google search for lyrics in Japanese and look for other English translations. The first word "sakimori" is an ancient Japanese and Chinese (incidentally) word referring to an outpost defender, not a soldier in battle. Yes this song was written for the movie but it's more about the transience of human life rather than about war nor anti-war.

👍Very nice music !Thank you 😎❤️🔥💘😘
thank you very much‼️

Thank you for the info. Greetings from Denmark

denmark told me japanese old good song i only knew the name. thank you and good for everybody.
This song is the ending theme song for a movie about the 1904 Japan-Russia War.
