HARLEY Davidson Intake MAINFOLD & CV Carburetor Ultima IGNITON Install On 1990 883 EVO Sportster

- Did an install of a Harley Davidson intake manifold and Kiehin CV Carburetor on a 1990 883 Harley Davidson EVO Sportster. After the first time of installing the carburetor and intake manifold, I realized that something wasn't right and decided to do the install over again and swap out the ignition system to an Ultima single fire ignition system.

Been there. Bolted the manifold on all tightened up then put the carb on. Everything felt too tight and the flanges weren't quite flush. Fired it up and it popped and sputtered and blew fire out of the front exhaust. Loosened everything up, one manifold flange was in a bind cockeyed. Fit it all up with the carb on loosely then snugged everything up and it worked fine.
@4:18 ...just a word of caution... make sure to use a grease/lube that won't swell or degrade the rubber of the seals. *Dielectric Grease works really well for that application
I use white lithium grease for everything, even put that 💩 on my toast, works the balls.
Good point, I keep o- ring grease around at all times. Most regular will destroy rubber
I have an 89 883. I was born in 89 myself and plan on keeping her alive as long as I am. I had no mechanical experience when I bought it and through my own blunders to accidents that totaled it and nearly me I have kept it alive. Videos like this have immensely helped thank you.
Glad this helps
I wanted 72 Sportster 24 years ago being born in 72.. I ended up with a 73 and like you I had no clue how to work on it even with being mechanically inclined.. cars mostly back then.. My husband teases me all the time about being a U Tube mechanic.. However, videos like these has taught me so much that I may have solved an issue with my husband's 76 ironhead that has plagued his scoot for years just from watching one of Saddle Tramp's videos.. Of course I can't imagine his bike not doing what it does because it's been that way the whole 31 years we've been together that it's almost a trade mark! Still there even after multiple tear downs, including one complete bottom end rebuild! It still does what it did all these years later so I'm excited to see if what I learned will fix his problem and I know it will have mine back on the road this year!
You just saved a lot of viewers a bunch of trouble with showing how to eliminate intake leaks. You can drive yourself nuts trying to tune a carb or timing when you have an intake leak, and you got it nailed here. Good deal also on pointing out that the intake flanges are different front and rear. The Missus has a sweet looking scoot, especially considering it was there in your shop the whole time, just in different corners all at the same time! It sounds sweet, too! :)
I ride a 2003 XLH1200 I bought in 2006. All the years since then rode it, and it was a finicky starter, would run hot on the interstate, so I put an oil cooler on it. It averaged about 48-50 mpg all those years. A couple of years ago, the factory ignition failed on a ride, and I got the Dyna ignition to replace it. The factory electronic ignition looked like it was made in a toy factory, really cheap looking, the Dyna looked built like a tank in comparison. I set up the timing, and set the little light on the Dyna ignition, and the bike fired off with the first starter bump. Riding the last couple of years, my fuel mileage went to 58-62 mpg, I rarely have to use the oil cooler, and it starts, idles and runs better and smoother than it ever had. I'd have never believed setting timing and having a high quality ignition would have made that much difference.
Good deal, man!
Good video Corey, shop looks full, gods blessed you with prosperity and Harleys, lol keep the videos coming👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
People should know. Don’t use copper core plug wires with the Ultima. Carbon core only. Good video.
It's alive, it's alive. The Frankenharley is alive! Sounds good on the road.
Sure does!
Congrats to the_missus, you have a healthy sounding scooter there. Your turn to lead the next ride!!!
Happy spouse , Happy house! That little 883 sounds good, I'd ride it 😂
Corey, that bike sounds great and you look like a "happy camper". Enjoy. Thanks for Sharing! 🙃🙂
The rear cylinder on a Harley is always your #1.
Cory, it's only running so good because Kim's there with it! LOL Don't try and ride it off without her!
Hey Man; that's one sweet sounding scooter. I wanted to let you know, I have a 1989 XL 883 that was converted into a 1200, I put the Ultima ignition in it too I keed the CV Carb, but when I bought the Ultima I got the wiring for the Computer Hook-Up, with this you can change the overall setting of ignition time Curves in both cylinders or one at a time. By doing so it'll gave your bike better cooling and more power. Plus when you hook it up to the computer it'll tell you things like How Many time you've started the bike.
How many times you have over rev the bike, you can set rev limits too. Just a whole lot of Good stuff for your Harley Man. When I took my bike in for a Dyno run, the guy ran it twice, looked at me and said Mr. there is nothing I can do for you, this bike runs Perfect.
Love Ya Bro.
On my 2002 besides the proper steps in installation, there was an issue with a little bend in the flanges Not sure how bad it is - just changed it. But IMS setting to 1\4 turn from a factory still a funniest thing i've met.
You are an inspiration to all! I want to find a bike and learn how to work on it. I’m tired of just riding I want to wrench. Thanks for all the videos! Ride Safe
Thanks, man. Glad to help
Buy a carb’d Harley, it’ll learn ya! Careful, it’s a very addictive and expensive passion as all Harley engines need proprietary tools but pay for themselves after one use. Good luck
Nice job dude 👍😎 I enjoyed your banter as well!! I have a 88 883 with a flowed Bartels HD manifold flange type used for the sportster class racing back in the day and 1200 sportster needle used from 1988-90 blk ceramic Mac pipes. She made 60 HP after I put custom cams in it
Cool beans, man!
@@SaddleTrampTV thanks bro . I just restored a beautiful 71 FLH all original in HiFi green
The Misses does a real nice job , working the camera for you !!! Thank you misses !!!
Sounds awesome truly awesome.. some great hints and tips again..great watch as always
Glad you could benefit!
Enjoyed the video finally got my 1960 BSA to actually get me home for the first time since I bought it so double celebration😁
Awesome!
I can only imagine how good that feels for you, because it's mighty rewarding for me👏
A sense of accomplishment
I never knew about lining up the intake manifold with the carb in place & then snugging the bolts and removing the carb before torqueing the bolts, makes perfect sense. I definitely want to switch to a single fire ignition on my 92 EVO 883 sporty. ride safe...
Nice job, I worked with a lot of cv carbs over my younger years loved them, if there tuned right they work great
Great cards they are
😢 My CV carburetor is 25 years old and work s good enough for me.
I very much agree. So many people write them off as junk. I've had great luck with them with many years and many many miles of trouble free service.
They will also handle alot of engine work with not really anything but jet changes.
Great video. I run an Ultima in my 76' Ironhead..... I really like the Ultima. That bike sounds great, well done, Cory. Hope to see you and the missus at Barber this year.
Good stuff as always, I've been deep in CV land lately too! Always enjoy your videos
Hey, man! Thanks. Looking forward to what's next with the shovel. Keep it up.
Very good information for my Sportster-2001. Always learning something fromk your vids. Muchas gracias Tramp ✌
Sure thing!
So I learned something I didn't know. I didn't realize there was a left and right flange. Thanks for the great information.
Glad to help my friend
You are amazing Cory. Regards to Kim.
yeah hooo, awesome bro makes feal good that everything worked out.🤞crossed😎👍
Yup, before the 96” intake flanges were directional. Just bought a 1993 Fatboy with M&L all aluminum 131”, she’s violent but ignition was replaced with Ultima and it works just as good as any.
96 inch ? Or were you meaning the year 1996 ? Just confused because 96inch engines were a popular evo build. I'm not being a smart ass, just thought your info was interesting and I wanted to understand.
Who or what is m/l ? At one time I had a M/P ( merchant price ) 110inch evo type engine. 131 " is a monster. Is that fatboy a street bike with that mill in there ?
Currently I have a s&s case with a sputhe top end 107" evo, bolted into a 1995 electra glide. It'll rip tires off the rim all day.
@@whatyoumakeofit6635 lol no worries, your bike sounds awesome. 96 inch Twin Cam heads started using intake flanges that are just a little bigger but unlike 2005 and before they are not directional ( Front & Back ). My 1993 131” Fatboy is a race engine but set up like a show bike or custom, it’s the bike in my pic. I do ride it on the street but it’s so violent it’s street manors aren’t the smoothest when trying to hold a steady mid rpm throttle, takes a lot to get used to. 107” is a great build, tried and trued. I just did a full stage 4 107” build for my 2002 Electra Glide Standard this past winter. 10.8:1, t man 590 cams, Mikuni 42, tried the 45 and the 42 had a lot more snap down low and the crank was built from Red Hutchison out of Boynton Beach FL.
M&L was two guys who were known for there builds in the race scene, chopper scene etc. Joe Malloy (M) and his ex partner (L) broke up years back. The entire engine is Aluminum, looks amazing and works for heat but the 131 gets hot either way.
Good content! I have an 89,94,02,03 in my garage. The 4 speed only one still 883.02 is 1200C, the other 2 are hammer 1275. Very fun bikes and easy to work on. Probly gonna do cams on the 1200 soon so it's more similar to the big bore bikes. Hope the old lady enjoys many trouble free miles!
Hey right on, man!
When it comes to drag pipes and carburetors cut the pipes to 34½ inches long with a 45° degree slash cut then install a ¼ inch round steel rod straight up and down just inside the end of the exhaust pipes these are called splitters you're going to notice the difference in the performance enhancement achieved by these subtle changes....Honda motorcycles used long intake runners and splitters to enhance the performance of their machines right from the factory years ago... squeezing every bit of HP they could get...on my Shovelhead FX I have a 3" extended intake piece that S&S sold back in the early 70s Yost power tube sells a 1" and a 2" extender that makes a big difference in the performance....
Sounds so good!👍
Congrats on the fix. Sounds great.
Hey thanks!
What a good looking, and even better sounding bike! Great job on the bike. Really cool bike.
Couldn't agree more!
From Az..love your videos glad you got it going sounds 👍
Thanks, Richard!
Many things have me jealous of you- Two things that make me jealous are your pimp ass van- super killer!!! Always wanted one!!! The other of the two is you can actually get your ol lady to film for you!!!!! Lucky, my woman can’t stand anything i do with RUclips!!!! Lol. Maybe one day, i’ll reach your level of coolness!!! Good video bro!!!
As always thanks for sharing!
Awesome video as always 👌
Awesome job man, bike sounds good.
I love it
I love you videos you are real man and humble.
Just keeping it honest
Nice sounding Sportster! Good job!
Thanks, man!
Great job and another great video 👍👍
Thanks!
Im a actual hd mechanic and if you have questions ask , the joke is qs are free as are 20 bucks but i love your content so ask and I can give you master level knowlegde for nothin but an email
Love it when a plan comes together!!! 😎👍
Me too! Thanks, Nate!
Good video sir! I’ve △⃒⃘Lways dug the intro btw.
Righteous guidance~~
those cv carbs work good on shovelheads too. did a couple back in the early 90's. had to make manifold adaptors to fit them and do a couple of mods on the carb to increase the fuel flow a bit (evos run a bit leaner). good to see redemption on the road. keep lookin' up,
bill
Shoot! Sorry I missed the premiere. No ads will be skipped as reparations.
Lol
Cool video man
I build a bite from a rack it was 93 and apparently it was enough to take shape the intake. And that was always a problem till someone figured it out for me.. I did this I think in 2003 always had a problem with a lean condition and that's what it was the intake was oval-shaped from the oval shaped from the accident
Awesome video, Saddle Tramp!!
Thanks! Glad you can dig it, my friend!
Good going Corey
Thanks!
Sounds great!
Thanks!
Thing sounds awesome 👌 👍
She’s sounding damn good now good job brother
Sounds great
Thanks, Andy!
Nice job youg man....God bless.
Thank you, Tom
Sounds good 😎👍
Got it tuned out nice.sounds really good. 20:00
Hell yeah!!!! Go cause some trouble!!! Good job!!!!
Will do!
Good job !!!!
Thanks!!
Nice
u mite check yr seals HD seals are thicker in the tapered area then the after market ones HAPPY TRAILS
Should use Rubber grease on seals, petrochemical grease like wheel bearing grease will break the seal down over time. rubber grease on the other should preserve the the seals and keep them supple
I also use German torque specs frequently. Just torque to “Gutentite” 😂
😂yeah its always something with my 73 ironhead.. used to be $20 a crack, now its like $100! Hopefully I'll be back in the saddle this year! Need some wind therapy before I throat punch someone!
Did you spray around those seals after you were finished to check for leaks? I had the most difficult time getting my evo intake to seal. Followed procedures exactly. Probably redid that job 4-5x before getting a seal. Was a real pita.
Only if it runs like crap afterwards. Maybe check your flanges to make sure they're not warped.
You gotta love that old HD sound... music to my ears :-) Gas prices in commiefornia are in the $5 a gallon range.
Tell me about it
Multible vehicals are hard to keep up. Find the one you ride the most and sell the rest.
run the cv on my twincam...love it..
Awesome!
I gave my local shop the cv carb and intake I had sitting in a box as I have an s&s. Do you know where Hernando, MS is? I just bought a bolt on chopper front end from a company there for my 96 sporty.
That's just below Southhaven
Thanks for this video Cory, i have the ultima to install on my 87 flhtp. I hope mine goes as good as yours did. I have had it a year, and only rode 200 miles. I have rebuilt many pieces of it. Ignition is the last part for now. LOL old bikes right?
Hope this helps, man. Sure it will.
Jack up the rear, put it in high gear, pull the plugs, thumb or finger over front plug hole and it’ll sound like an air gun when removing your finger while the piston is coming up on TDC. Once it’s at its highest point before comeback down, you’re there.
Need some advice and can’t find too much on diagnosis on YT!
I have a 2003 Fatboy and the bike has run fantastic until now, the bike sat for two years so I took the carb off and cleaned everything really really well and drained the fuel tank, thoroughly cleaned it inside and put her back together.
A few tries w fresh fuel and bam the bike roared to life again!
Until I took her out on the road, if I accelerate slowly she comes right up to speed, if I roll on the accelerator it starts coughing and popping back thru the carb!
Took the carb back off and all was clean, checked and doubled checked all jets and nothing so much as spec of dirt anywhere!
Put it back together and readjust the air screw and same thing!!!!!
Any ideas?
And I’ll add, once again before the bike sitting it ran fantastic and nothing has changed on the bike parts wise!!
Sounds like intake seals. They're known for leaking over time because of age or sitting.
@@SaddleTrampTV ok thanks for the reply, ill order a set and a rebuild kit and give it a try! Bike should never have sat this long, that won’t be happening again! Thanks again for the reply… love the channel
Sorry, I just hopped the most recent video you uploaded where did you get that gas tank for the tramp? or what did it come off of?
I bought it off of a guy on Craigslist. It looks to be an aftermarket fatbob tank meant for sportsters.
Yep I certainly wouldn't pass down and I shovel like that if I was closer
Her bike is fixed, time to get back to your bikes 😊
Lol
Great vedio man👍👍.i have a quick question. i am converting a 2017 883 iron to a carburetor system .could you recommend a intake manifold for a cv carb that would fit to the efi heads on this bike..thanks so much👍👍👍
I would think an intake from off of a 2003 and earlier. But I have no experience with anything newer. Plus, I'm sure you'll have to do more than that. The entire wiring along with ignition is meant for your existing efi. Plus, the cam cover has changed in the mid 2000s where you can't install an aftermarket ignition anymore behind the timing cover. It may be a lost cause, but I'm not the final authority.
@@SaddleTrampTV hey thanks for the quick reply. I hated the fuel injection .so I stripped the bike down and rewired it chopper style bare minimum.its ignition is made by thunder heart it's a stand alone type..I have a carb on bike now but the intake isn't sealing properly. I'll keep hunting for a manifold but thanks for your quick reply have a great day👍👍👍👍👍🥳🥳
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎
Ha Cory . Go to harbor freight and buy yourself a set of long ball end allen socket set . No need to remove the carb as you can reach and tighten the manifold flange fastners ...
I was using a ball end allen. It helped to a point, but the carb was still in the way of a good torque.
what curve are you running? cant see it, maybe its the damn phone. Im Running curve 2 on my 86 883 sportster with a cv carb! runs lovely, i just visited denmark with it and it ran like a dream.. had carb farts before doing cv + dynatek conversion.. greetings from germany!
Just the single fire with no voes.
@@SaddleTrampTV i also dont run voes.. But cant u pick the igniton curve on the igniton Switches?
@@Sicknezz You have to program the curves yourself with a computer. I don't have the means to do that. And it runs fine just as it is.
@@SaddleTrampTV i Think it has 4 curves build into it. U can change them with switch 2 and 3..
"I was just trying to finish this video"
...Good excuse. 🤭
PS the Missus is as stunning as ever.
She is indeed
Not that I'm a pro but I was taught to use lithium grease better and less corrosive also on gaskets unless sealer is needed don't know maybe doesn't matter
excuse me, do you need a new special coil for this electronic ignition?
If you're going to run single fire, yes. But no, if your're going to run it as a dual fire.
thank you! have a nice day
Bolt torque? If the engine doesn't rattle it loose, the bolt is tight enough. 😊
Busted by the Mrs.. ummm ohhh oooo.
Probably better to get busted by the Fuzz than the Mrs.
Lol
Yep,,,, put a gallon of "Non Ethanol" Lawn mower gas in the tank ! Then went down to a station and filled the tank with Corn Whiskey gas!!!
Old Bikes were made for leaded Gasoline or need the heads done to burn Corn Whiskey non lead or visit the local general aviation Airport.....
Are you afraid to reply to the to the FUEL PROBLEM of older Motorcycles? That required leaded Fuel?....Just pretend we can go to the local gas station and fill our tank? With Whiskey Corn Liquor....And ride off? Get real BRO.....By the way to solve a Sportsters carb problem is to install a Mickuni
I don't think he loved my comment but I do love SCOTTERS He's my age and probably a Vet....Hope to see and shake your hand SIR
U can do it
I hate to bring this up..... its a shortster. Evo are really cheap now so buy um up
First?
Better watch out cause big Joe Bidden will ban all Harley Davidson bikes and until they are electric battery v twins.
He’ll be dust before then, thank Christ!
Joe who?
