I love seeing the details you put into your hidden doors. Pivot hinges are the only way to go. One often has to pay tuition on the first two or three installs, but when done correctly, they put ones work head and shoulders above the rest. When doing doors like the basement door sometimes I increase the bevel on the edge of the door to about 7°. The jamb needs a bevel to match. The extrs taper helps camouflage the margin when that is the look the designer is calling out. Welcome back, we've been missing you. Thanks for sharing your skill and talent with us.
Hey Spencer.....Another great installation and your millwork challenges came out to perfection. Thanks again for all you share with us. Michael Grandinetti from American Millwork.
i love this, i will say though, in regards to the basement door…i’m from the south and we don’t have basements. If i had the money to build one i would put the thinnest door i could find i’ve seen to many creepy movies to know there’s an extremely heavy door at the top of the steps
Beautiful details Spencer. I ran into Paul at the hardware store the other week and he told me the Chestnut and Arneo houses coming up will be something special. Hope to see videos of the craftsmanship.
Sure will! We've got a lineup of some pretty sweet houses coming up this year. He told me he ran into you. Apparently the headphones gave it away! LOL!
just found your site !! very inspiring video , your first hidden door you seem to have to push with a bit of effort to open , maybe you could use a electronic lock with a lightweight spring to pop it open , I think to many finger prints on the door will be noticeable 😀
Man your work is amazing as always! They need an engineer of equal caliber. That post in the middle of the open space is terrible; why not install a steel beam? Same goes for what looked like a 3 member LVL beam by the staircase; why not install it up within the joist plane so as to increase head room, especially considering the high ceilings everywhere else. In any case, your work looks fabulous. Congrats!
I can’t believe drywall returns are back? Last summer here in Nor Cal I ripped a bunch out and did craftsman trim thru out the entire upper floor ( upper floor added by the GC) . Hu? Maybe they will call me back to rip it out and prep for returns ?
My helper built the step. If you think you're going to get absolute perfection out an employee you will spend your career working alone. All in all I thought he did a great job on the step. I'm not sure what miter you were refering to but the band board miters have biscuits and PL bonding them together.
Adding multiple layers of moulding really complicates a hidden door and makes it look bad IMO. This will have no base detail. The door is cut so that it will pivot slightly higher than the finished flooring. Same for the door with nickel gap. The flooring was actually already installed there and had about 1/8" clearance. The tambour wall room will have carpet. i may have to cut it down more depending on the carpet pile.
Love what you do. How can you call Hidden Door #2 a "hidden door" when you can see that it's a door plainly by the gap at the top? Isn't a hidden door suppose to be ...Hidden?
This video is accidentally very revealing. It shows Spencer as architecture critic. His work is top-rate, no question, but the design of the home itself, as well as the material selection, is highly, highly questionable. (Poplar as a finish wood? I'll believe it when I see it.) Just goes to show that all the money in the world can't buy good taste. But it can buy the labour of great talented craftsmen.
Like the Anderson Door detail going into pockets....Hope they are getting insurance for golf balls hitting the glass regular occurrence at St Andrews in Scotland broken Windows....Not so sure about the design of this house. Seems to lack something
Looks great! I would think that prairie style homes would be more prevalent in your area. The hidden doors are fantastic. I agree, they’ll need to be painted dark so that the shadow lines fade into your design.
I love woodworking and carpentry but my knees tell me otherwise these days. Knee pads are your friend, life catches up good luck and thanks for your content.
I see alot of this style in central Indiana as well. Most of my work is in the Geist reservoir area. I really appreciate your videos, Ive picked up on quite a few tricks from you..and I've been at it for 30 years. Good to see a fellow hoosier killin it, keep up the awesome work. Thank you sir.
Really nice, clean work as usual man! I like how you explained the unseen work that goes along with the Sheetrock wrapped windows and the small casing on the exterior doors. Little things like that are easily overlooked and suck up all your profits…. There is always something to learn!
Always a thumbs up for your videos. I gave this one the thumbs up when I was just 15 sec. into it. I knew it was going to be a good one. It didn't disappoint.
What "INTERESTING " architecture or the.... Craftsmanship is as always fantastic. The pivot hardware really hides vertical seams very well. My biggest concern is all the weight is resting on the bottom hinge, and no middle hinges to keep the door straight...and hold lateral load. Building fence gates to hold up in constant moisture cycles for 15 years,i could write a book of failures lol. Stair treads to nickle is a work of concentration! Welcome back.
With the pivot hardware I love how rock solid it is but I see your point of the door potentially bowing over time. I'm very comfortable with a good quality 6'8" door... 8' gets a little more sketchy. Stay tuned... I'm getting ready to do some hidden doors that are 12' tall. Plan is to use Sugatsune hinges.... Lets just say that it will be interesting...
Welcome back. I hope that your break was refreshing. It always amazes me how you’re able to work jobs and put these helpful videos together. Always worthwhile to learn from your master-level skills. Great solution to the edge of the dropped tray light. Excellent attention to detail (as always), working with the characteristics of the materials & designing it to work. I wish more architects had the understanding of material characteristics before they agree to fancy details seen by the customer on Pinterest. I can’t imagine how you managed to estimate this work. Looks like a lot of extra labor. Looking forward to my weekly learning session now that you’re back.
You do amazing work Spencer. I’ve learned so much from your videos! Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge with us.

Just finished a hidden door /bookcase.🏝️🇨🇦
Great advice on the bevel to increase margin!
I'd be interested to see your steps taken to install a hidden door using the Rixon pivot hardware. Your reveals are so crisp.
Homeowner has deep deep pockets. Awesome work.
Your attention to detail is amazing!
I love watching your craftsmanship work

You hit it out of the park with the hidden doors!
Awesome job Spencer...thanks for showing it!
Beautiful home !! It's a little too modern for my tastes, but nice space !!
Always a good day when you post a new video Spencer.

I hope that exterior siding is dent resistant...not to mention those ginormous sliding doors. Amazing work inside as usual!
Hi 👋
Hope those big sliders aren't a couple hundred yards down range from the tee box!
Great stuff man, that modern work is difficult.
Amazing work, thanks for sharing.
Amazing work. Every time I’m doing something I think “how would Spencer do this?”
Outstanding.i am building my own modern home. This really helps. Thank you.
Hi 👋
Nice job Spencer. I was wondering when the videos would be released on the Pine Valley house. I am hoping to see it when it is completed.

Let's go big Dogg! 👏👏👏👏👏
Welcome back!
Fantastic attention to detail as always Spencer. Now, go hit a couple bucket of balls.
Hey 👋
What brackets did you use for that fireplace?
14:10… why not scarf that top joint to hide the gap? I’m 6’6” and I’d definitely see that…but sweet work
Phil Well
Been missing u. Glad ur back.
LOL whats the under/over on how long it takes to slice a golf ball into this house
Don Poctor 😮
Love your work. Don’t love the slat wall design
Great work on the hidden doors. I've used Rixson pivot hinges. Big price tag, but impressive quality
question froma complete novice, if you were to stagger the top boards so you don't have a straight line would that hide the door better?
AK
That stealth door will need contant tweaking for about a year. The push latch system is 'flimsy' there are much more positive systems out there.
I hope you'll be able to film a tour when it's finished- This place is going to look incredible! You do beautiful work!
Lots of hidden doors, bit suss
1:46 “kinda silly”. you said it.
Higgins
Beautiful !!!
Are the hidden doors solid?
Didn't realize you were up in Fort Wayne... you ever do any work in the Greater Indy area?
Nope, thats a bit too far for me.
What hinges did you use on the hidden door? Sugatsune?? J❤
Is that roof EPDM or TPO? Off your trade but curious.
🔥😌🔥
great video, be honest you lost your shirt on big touch latch door?
Actually that detail was probably my best line item on the whole house. It went well.
sure wish I had money
What happened at the house with the curved stair case.👍🏝️🇨🇦
It has been completed long ago. I never got back in to do a video walkthrough.
Surprised you let that open miter go on the entry step. Otherwise top notch as usual.
My helper built the step. If you think you're going to get absolute perfection out an employee you will spend your career working alone. All in all I thought he did a great job on the step. I wonder how you price somthing like this😮
Wheres the base on the tambour door? I am curious about the base details on an outswing door. Almost no one shows this.

@@InsiderCarpentry so that gap on the bottom of the floor will remain?

Concealed door...whatever floats your boat.
About 4m 49s you started talking like everyone had helmets on

Sorry not a fan of the business building look outside
Sorry 😢
no one asked
That’s why there’s so many different styles of houses

@18:33 I'm guessing there's a pool. A betting pool of "when's the glass going to break from an errant shot?!?" :)
Looks great! I would think that prairie style homes would be more prevalent in your area.

It’s the Californians moving all over and corrupting the country

Confused why you couldn’t nail the casing on the exterior door jambs?
Excellent work, as usual Spencer! Love your details
fantastic details. We all of been missing your posts but I am sure we know why the delay. good stuff. Was that Paul dashing around?

It gets harder and harder to bid as the jobs seam to keep getting more and more complex.
I love what you do. I would rather see you do them and not a walkthru when they are done
I make a living trimming not making videos so sometimes I just can't get videos done.
