I love seeing the details you put into your hidden doors. Pivot hinges are the only way to go. One often has to pay tuition on the first two or three installs, but when done correctly, they put ones work head and shoulders above the rest. When doing doors like the basement door sometimes I increase the bevel on the edge of the door to about 7°. The jamb needs a bevel to match. just found your site !! very inspiring video , your first hidden door you seem to have to push with a bit of effort to open , maybe you could use a electronic lock with a lightweight spring to pop it open , I think to many finger prints on the door will be noticeable 😀
Man your work is amazing as always! They need an engineer of equal caliber. That post in the middle of the open space is terrible; why not install a steel beam? Same goes for what looked like a 3 member LVL beam by the staircase; why not install it up within the joist plane so as to increase head room, especially considering the high ceilings everywhere else. In any case, your work looks fabulous. Congrats!
I can’t believe drywall returns are back? Last summer here in Nor Cal I ripped a bunch out and did craftsman trim thru out the entire upper floor ( upper floor added by the GC) . Hu? Maybe they will call me back to rip it out and prep for returns ?
My helper built the step. If you think you're going to get absolute perfection out an employee you will spend your career working alone. All in all I thought he did a great job on the step. I'm not sure what miter you were refering to but the band board miters have biscuits and PL bonding them together.
Adding multiple layers of moulding really complicates a hidden door and makes it look bad IMO. This will have no base detail. The door is cut so that it will pivot slightly higher than the finished flooring. Same for the door with nickel gap. The flooring was actually already installed there and had about 1/8" clearance. The tambour wall room will have carpet. i may have to cut it down more depending on the carpet pile.
Love what you do. How can you call Hidden Door #2 a "hidden door" when you can see that it's a door plainly by the gap at the top? Isn't a hidden door suppose to be ...Hidden?
This video is accidentally very revealing. It shows Spencer as architecture critic. His work is top-rate, no question, but the design of the home itself, as well as the material selection, is highly, highly questionable. (Poplar as a finish wood? I'll believe it when I see it.) Just goes to show that all the money in the world can't buy good taste. But it can buy the labour of great talented craftsmen.
Like the Anderson Door detail going into pockets....Hope they are getting insurance for golf balls hitting the glass regular occurrence at St Andrews in Scotland broken Windows....Not so sure about the design of this house. Seems to lack something
Looks great! I would think that prairie style homes would be more prevalent in your area. The hidden doors are fantastic. I agree, they’ll need to be painted dark so that the shadow lines fade into your design.
I love woodworking and carpentry but my knees tell me otherwise these days. Knee pads are your friend, life catches up good luck and thanks for your content.

What "INTERESTING " architecture or the.... Craftsmanship is as always fantastic. The pivot hardware really hides vertical seams very well. My biggest concern is all the weight is resting on the bottom hinge,and no middle hinges to keep the door straight...and hold lateral load. Building fence gates to hold up in constant moisture cycles for 15 years,i could write a book of failures lol. Stair treads to nickle is a work of concentration! Welcome back.
With the pivot hardware I love how rock solid it is but I see your point of the door potentially bowing over time. I'm very comfortable with a good quality 6'8" door... 8' gets a little more sketchy. Stay tuned... I'm getting ready to do some hidden doors that are 12' tall. Plan is to use Sugatsune hinges.... Lets just say that it will be interesting...

Great solution to the edge of the dropped tray light. Excellent attention to detail (as always), working with the characteristics of the materials & designing it to work. I wish more architects had the understanding of material characteristics before they agree to fancy details seen by the customer on Pinterest. I can’t imagine how you managed to estimate this work. That stealth door will need contant tweaking for about a year. The push latch system is 'flimsy' there are much more positive systems out there.

Wheres the base on the tambour door? I am curious about the base details on an outswing door. Almost no one shows this.

It gets harder and harder to bid as the jobs seam to keep getting more and more complex.
