  • Although much restored this water-powered carousel (roundabout) at Silverdale Glen dates back to 1911, and is the oldest working example of its type in the British Isles. The waterwheel was re-purposed after the closure of a lead mine at nearby Foxdale. Shift the lever, leap on board, and ride that horse! Filmed 18 June, 2018.

I have magical childhood memories of Silverdale Glen as a child in the 70s. Many a happy holiday there. I loved the carousel.

I can well believe it. It's a magical place, and that carousel is very special...and works without the need for power from fossil fuels too. Brilliant!
