i would recommend doing some interval speed work as well, so that you can go faster during your long runs, and it helps your normal speed feel like a lower intensity.

On Sept, I went to the Dr and found out I had very high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I’m not fit AT ALL. I made a lifestyle change and signed up for the gym on October 1. My goal was to be able to run a mile non-stop and not slowing down. I started with a walk/run interval. I could barely run for 1 minute without wanting to pass out. As the weeks went on, I would add time by telling myself “just one more minute”.
It’s been 10 weeks since I first started and my last long distance run was this past Friday. I ran for 26 minutes non-stop. My pace was slow but my breathing was in rhythm and my body was relaxed. I probably could’ve made it to 30 minutes. It was probably the first time I experienced a real runners high.
For those having a hard time running longer, when you want to stop, tell yourself “just one more minute”.

Madeline Moore the best tip is Don’t Run hard all the time just do slow longer runs and get as much miles in a week that’s how you’ll improve Just don’t go every run trying to go 100% effort because you’ll either get injured, over trained or Be put off it

@@Desilv I ran pretty regularly from March to August but less regularly when school started. However I’ve still made progress and ran 2 miles a few times in the summer at 9:30-11:30 pace (2 miles is my longest distance). Now I do less running and more strength training, but when I do run on cardio days, I run at least a mile. Since running isn’t my primary form of exercise anymore, I don’t do it as much but am still pleased with my progress.

Run walk is such a great way of getting started... you can get off the couch and just walk then increase the amount you run... walk a half hour and run for a minute or what ever you can. Increase the amount you run and reduce the amount you walk. That’s how I started running ... started walking in August and then ran 22km in November. Take it slow and just move!

    Hi Holly,
I tried what you talked about and I like it. I’m the firefighter paramedic that lost approx 185 pounds. (I’m pretty sure I told you this before) I did that by watching some of your videos about running. I have been running about 5 years and I’m always looking for ways to improve so I watch your videos. Boy what a difference in my life it made. I went from being the big guy at the fire house to the guy that always goes downstairs on duty and works out. At my heaviest my waist size was 60 inches. Today 34 inches. When I was done with all my weight loss I had to have skin removed around my waist. Thanks once again and maybe I will post some pictures before and after what I looked like. Most people did not even recognize me that did not see me on a regular basis. Enjoy your Xmas.

TRE coaches are awesome! For breathing drills I place my hand on my stomach for 20-30 seconds throughout a run to make sure I’m belly breathing. I have sinus issues so the nose breathing is often too difficult. Also added in 30 sec per 1 or 1.5 mile walk breaks for my long runs of 10+ miles and really helps reset form and I find my recovery is much quicker. For reference, I started with 15 second jog by 60 second walk 2 years and 80 pounds ago.

These sounds like summer pretty solid tips & I’m going to try to keep this in mind. I do more so treadmill running due to doing some weight & body weight training as well at my gym. The goal is to one day get back into a real track and try to get a nonstop mile in. Thanks for the tips.

I always run out and backs. This way a 10 mile run is not a big deal because I’m only out 5. There’s only one way to get back and that’s 5miles back. Since I want it to end faster rather than slower I won’t want to walk. :)

Tough Mastermind run away from your starting point for half of your total mileage. This will force you to run your mileage goals. If you choose to run for time the same thing applies.

I ran 8.1 miles today 😎. I’ve been running consistently for almost 2 months. I feel that my heart and lungs can take the distance. The problem is my legs. I get aches and pains, not short of breath.

I used to be so good at running like I was at the top 5 of my class at running the fastest mile. I used to run with this one other girl and she really helped me improve by running with me, sadly she is in another class now so I don't really have her guide anymore. So I switched and I run with my best friend now, but recently I haven't been working out or improving because my mental state isn't well, so I've been just trashing my body. The most recent time I've ran I was good in the first 2-3 laps but I couldn't keep up when it came to the middle of the second lap. My running friend noticed and wanted to help but our PE teacher is really strict and doesn't let us walk, so she had to leave me. I was so disappointed in myself. But here I am the next weekend searching up tips to run and working out like crazy lol.

I have a minor in vocal singing (which includes lots of breathing technique/practice) and find it humorous how she says to use "deep belly breathing" but then proceeds to only expand her rib cage lol.....When breathing from the diaphragm most of the expanding should be done from the belly--not the ribs. A good way to practice this is by laying done flat on the ground and take deep breaths, you'll notice your belly move up and down, this is proper breathing. Infants do it all the time but somehow adults struggle. Proper breathing will definitely benefit us runners.

Holly. I know this is a older video. But I got a question. I stumbled upon this video because I’m struggling with breathing while running. I did the workout in the video today. Ran for 1/4 mile , did 10 air squats and 30 second plank , then walked for one minute than ran another 1/4 mile and repeat. Until I did 3.3 miles. Should I aim to do this workout once a week?? Or more

I joined the soccer team this year and we have practices. Because it’s so much running we have to run a mile or 2. Sometimes we just run 4 laps but I have a lot of trouble with breathing and running for a good amount of time.
