this is an fantastic video... it absolutely explains the answer to the questions ive had regarding ROLLING YOUR OWN carbon fiber handles.. why you are professional.
Good comment about sanding into the carbon skins versus sanding into the kevlar or glass types. Along with Andy Dear, I am the inventor of these grips and am always happy to see how well they have caught on since we made the first ones in 2005.
Evolve Custom Rods - how to make the grip have a real nice looking transition from grip to blank? Do you add a small winding check on the front of the fore grip? You don’t have to worry about the side that butts up against the reel seat, but should I do something to the exposed side of the grip that faces the guides?
@@magicmike9518 if you just taper the carbon fiber down it will work. I usually just cover it with thread to get a smooth transition. Winding checks work as well, I have used them on several rods.
Outstanding video… thank you! Question: I want to hollow out a cavity in a CSX Carbon fiber fore grip. Cavity would be a triangle 3/8” wide by 1” long. I’d like to attach the rattle from a Western Diamondback rattlesnake in the cavity then embed in epoxy up to flush with the grip. I plan to apply epoxy to the grips before cutting into it. I’d appreciate any pointers, suggestions, cautions etc.. Thanks for your help. Brian
I don't really understand, if you want to put snakeskin on the underside of carbon, you will not see it. If you want to put it on the outside, just build up the epoxy so it is level with no pockets. Then I would use a little color preserver to put on the snakeskin to make sure it stays where you put it.
Awesome video. Thank you Where did you get the carbonfibre mixed fibreglass sleeve? I can’t seem to find anything like that. Essentially want to do what you did and show my coloured resin through
John it's been over a week since I applied my first of epoxy to the guides and need to apply the second coat any tips on applying the second coat since it's been over a week. Thanks
Looking forward to the foam core instructions. Hope that's coming soon? In the mean time, I'm wondering if it would be possible to cast a custom shaped grip in foam and then skin it with carbon? I have a some specialized grip I've been working on that would be somewhat difficult to turn on a lathe. I'm trying to figure out it I could do it in carbon skinned foam. Thanks!
Nice video... thanks for sharing with us. What would happen if you had let the blue epoxy cure before putting the sleeve and clear epoxy over the blue? Would the carbon have a more pronounced black pattern since it hadn't absorbed blue epoxy?
Great question, unfortunately I don't know. I imagine that yes the black may be more pronounced, but it may only make a little difference. I probably won't try this just due to epoxy cost and time to cure. The process takes a while when you factor in drying. If you have the time, I would try it. If you do, let me know how it turns out.
I use Pro Kote, it is a medium build epoxy. You can purchase it from several venders online, like Mudhole.com. I haven't opened my store yet to sell products.
I’ve bought carbon fiber grips and had areas appear after use of delaminating of the epoxy from the fiber. Appears as an area of cloudiness. What am I missing?
Where did you get the grips? Did you make them yourself? If there was an air pocket in the foam, this could cause it. Put some water on it and see if it goes away. If there is a scuff in the epoxy, it may appear different. Send me some pics! I have never seen or heard of this, nor has it happened on any of my grips.
I am using 6lb closed cell foam. My supplier does not exist any more. Try boat foam, the flotation type. I saw some on amazon from total boat. I will try and get you a specific supplier.

I have done your technique with the permagloss finish. Really makes for a perfect final product on carbon fiber.

Good video. I would be interested in your process of casting the polyurethane handle blank.
It's coming

Just put it on, make sure its clean, but I have gone a month between coats.

Very informative. Was the flex coat heated before application as it appeared very fluid?
Yes, I always heat my epoxy. I was using a coffee mug warmer, now I use the CRB bottle warmer.
Looks fantastic. Great video. Cant wait to give this a go.

John what's the difference between the pro coat epoxy and the CFX 800 Resin
I have never used the cfx resin before.
Thank you for the information. Look forward to your other videos.
What power wrapper brand are you using in this video?
American Tackle with an Alps head.
Could you share the link where you get the sleeves
sollercompositesllc.com/tubular-sleeving-2/
hello thank you for your video can you tell me which epoxy or product you use? and a supplier in advance thank you
I use Pro Kote, it is a medium build epoxy. You can purchase it from several venders online, like Mudhole.com. I haven't opened my store yet to sell products.
Are you using a Mud Hole Power Wrapper?
No, I am using an old American Tackle power wrapper, with an upgraded Alps chuck. The Mud Hole power wrappers seem really nice.
@@EvolveCustomRods were you using the Alps when you were turning the grip or a Lathe?
@@curtiswilson4483 I have done it both ways, and you can see the videos on my channel.
On the material. Are you using white or natural to accept the color?
It is carbon weaved with fiberglass. Fiberglass is white until it gets wet. I will be doing an all fiberglass grip soon.
@@EvolveCustomRods thank you I new it had fiberglass just wasn't sure if you was using natural or white. Appreciate the response 👍
Hi, thank you for the information. Do you have a website with your videos accessible in the one place? Regards, Frank

Great video! I wondered if I could use pro kote instead of the stuff that cfx sells us! Also, I found your pen!
Did you make the foam core? So many questions. Help!!!
I did make the foam core, I will be doing a video on that. You can also purchase foam cores from mudhole.com

Nice video thanks👍👍👍👍👍
Must look fantastic on the fishing rod. Do you make the rods too.?
Rod blanks are not something I do. It would not be cost effective.
What type of foam cores are you using? Can you provide a supplier?
