Hi Bryan, spend a few hours setting this up and it's really amazing! Just a suggestion for your future development, if you could allow sychning of updated zotero notes into the same file in obsidian without disrucpitn any established link in canvas, it would be amazing! For me and probably many other researcher, everytime we have a different question in mind we might need revisit the paper and make new highlight and notes. I'm sure you can figure this out hope to see new update! Thank you!
I’ve since figured it out and it’s in a response to an issue on my sponsors only vault but since it’s not useful to me and my workflow it won’t make it into the template vault for distribution unfortunstely
Hey Brian, is it discussion #27 and 28? I tried it and still have some issues which I commented in the thread, would you be able to take a look when you have a chance? Thanks!
Hey! So like a lot of people I'm in the process of migrating from Notion to Obsidian. One thing about Notion I liked was the Save to Notion web clipper chrome extension. It made it really easy to clip things directly into Notion. Right now I am trying to figure out the best way to replicate that functionality in Obsidian. It has been great trying out the vault template. Just a question: how come the graph view and command palette disappears when using the vault template? Also, edits to the templates cause templater to not work and tags and all the other stuff above "link", "cite", "abstract" to become text. Would be great to get your advice :)
im not really understanding what issues youre facing? nothing should be disappearing, and i dont understand the "templates become text" bit either. i'd need more visuals via screenshots to better understand, this is better handled via my FAQ repo: github.com/BryanJenksCommunity/FAQ/discussions

I am sorry for the noob question, but I am not so great with programming. Is it possible to add the highlightr code inside another theme. I prefer AnupPuccin, and I have no idea how to do it. thanks.
every theme has a CSS file, so yeah, you can combine it with everything the theme files are in the hidden .obsidian/themes directory at the root of your vault
Hey Bryan this is an amazing video. I wanted to use zotero to do research for my RUclips videos and bring the annotations in obsidian to develop on it more for better script. I also want you to make a video on raindrop to obsidian integration. I want to bring the highlights of web articles into obsidian for same reason. I have seen somewhere that it is possible but because it is technical so it is hard for me to understand without guidance. Thanks for the video.
Hi Bryan, thank you very much for your system! I really appreciate it. I setup Obsidian to have the exact same tag structure as you have. However, I am currently stuck at 22:21 of the video. When I try to create a new tag rule in the supercharged links, I am unable to get the icons using the same method you do. In other words, to get the inbox tag, you type ",in" and obsidian automatically selects your inbox emoji. However, when I type ",in" it does not automatically replace it with the inbox emoji. Instead, I need to copy and paste the emoji. Any ideas as to how to get the shortcuts to the emoji in the way you do?

I feel like this is a very simple question that I'm just failing to find an answer to but how do you get the ability to type emojis like the inbox/scroll/redSquare for supercharged links? I saw you type ',inbox' for the inbox emoji so I tried to search up community plugins using that syntax but couldn't find any. Thanks for the help!
Thank you for the video! I'm still new to Obsidian and struggling with some stuff. - At around 40:37, you open these Links and Linked mentions icons. How did you get that? I can't find this icon in Windows. Maybe that's a hard one to answer since you're on Mac. - In a previous video where you showed the Zettelkasten method, you had your keywords (ex : ADHD, ADD, DAMP, etc.) on display and that allowed you to easily see how many articles had that keyword and this allowed you to create some type of permanent note for this keyword (that's what I understood from watching that video). Now in this video, your keywords are like in a callout. With the workflow you're showing now, can these keywords still be used the same way as you did before?
Hi, thanks a lot for the video, concerning the callout manager plugins, where can I find your code that I have to paste in the data.json file? Thanks a lot
Hey Bryan, thanks for the boat load of cool input on this! I am struggling with a really pesky small problem i cant find documentation on: when i execute the import command (via hotkey or command palette, makes no difference) the pop up appears and is foregrounded, but not focused. I can only start typing in it after manually selecting it with the mouse. I changed the setting to keep the pop up always foregrounded but it does not solve the focus issue (also, returning the setting to default makes the pop up not appear foregrounded for some reason). Any ideas?
I skimmed through parts of the video, but I couldn't find what I was looking for, which was how you implement taking atomic notes into all this, something I remember seeing in your 2021 setup. Do you simply work with the highlights and write out your thoughts within 1 article/book/podcast now, and use the quotes directly for canvas stuff?
Hey Bryan, this is a great workflow but it seems like I will get the most out of it if I have the same or similar zotero set up as you have going with the tags and icons and all. So some questions: 1. How were you able to tag all your papers with the appropriate scroll, red, green tags? It seems like many of your papers also either have the inbox or checkmark icon depending on whether you read them or not. Are all of this done manually paper by paper? 2. How were you able to find all the related papers for each paper? Did you do it manually or automatically? If automatic, do I need to use research rabbit? I have thousands of papers on zotero and so far I only have them organized in collections and subcollections. So any automation would help.
I think in my last zotero video I’ve covered the tag/colors thing and it can be as simple as dragging a selection of papers onto one of the tags in the tag pane to tag them all with that tag
Hi! First of all, thank you so so so much for these detailed explanations. I'm still going crazy from the excess of info (not just yours, but the whole of obsidian cause I just fell into this rabbit hole three days ago and I'm a newbie both to programming and to Zotero), but I feel like I'm getting somewhere? I've been following your steps and got stuck at highlightr, as the code just won't translate into highlighted text. It just stays as normal, not highlighted text, even though the code may present as "hello". What can I be doing wrong? I uploaded the exact bit you took from your custom theme into AnupPuccin (at the end of the css file, I clicked on enter and then pasted). Thank you so much in advance! :D
You have applied custom formatting into all sorts of things such as Theme to be applied to highlightr 11:59 and etc. How should I find those custom formattings/settings?
you can get my template vault's static release by signing up to my newsletter here: bryanjenkstech.ck.page/d4ec0713d5 or you can get the sponsors only version by sponsoring at: github.com/sponsors/tallguyjenks
Thx alot, will give this one a try. Btw I just stumbled upon this in your Video. How do you write your tags? like in 22:22. It seems you use something like ",inbox" or ",rs" but how do you execute this to be a tag? I'm using your Newsletter Vault right now.
I can't even say how much this video helped me, thank you so much. This saved me literally hours and hours of trying to figure the stuff out. I just have one question left, which is the update of papers. In case I noticed a typo or added some more highlights after reading, the template overwrites also my summary or key points. Is there any way to circumvent it, or do I need to copy it to a safe place and then paste it back in?
my workflow doesnt take that into account as i only export once, its perhaps not the most ideal workflow for an academic, but i did work on the solution for updating papers and notes being added in the future to a point, and its in my sponsors only vault as a repository issue ive answered
Hi Bryan - virtuoso performance. I watched the video once to get an overview. I have fundamental questions (I can't see the forest for all the trees currently.). So, you bring in current content from Zotero and then use Obsidian afterwards. Can I export Zotero-type content back to Zotero easily and go on as before in Zotero? I'm nervous about moving the whole enchilada from Zotero to Obsidian, working in Obsidian, and then finding I need Zotero for bibliography transfer to LaTeK's Overleaf to produce a PDF of a book or paper or for some other reason. My workflow is that of creating mathematics learning materials. I'm now confused as I play with various combinations of tools for my workflow, which is also evolving. I have several tools I currently use and wonder if Obsiodian may be the best central location for collating my ideas, editing the equations in LaTeX, sharing them (Obsidian Publish and Overleaf) and publishing the "final" as a PDF or Obsidian Publish for dynamic content. Obsidian has various LaTeX plugins and a Biblio Plugin, which I must explore.
i still use zotero to generate bibliographies, its just that the idea linking and notes are pushed to obsidian where the real work happens but i can always collect a group of papers in zotero into a subcollection and make a bibliography
Great video! Is there any way to ensure that the metadata gets transferred as Obsidian properties? Seems like I have the problem where only for some books the metadata will transfer as Obsidian properties but for most it will just be a plain text.
Callouts... via callout manager rather than Admonition plugin... so will need to check for clashes (or swap back to CM rather than A plugin). But nice thanks. Single export issues; - If you were to 'copy' the pdf in Zot, adding say "run 2" to its file name... or better still a new clear copy withthat change - for your second reading and note - as you might be reviewing for a different reason/project... then it shouldn't overwrite? Hm maybe... but you can join via aliases function in Obsidian. So maybe OK... mind as with you clean steps is nice. Biggest issue is Chapter by chapter reading and so multiple imports and so maybe some Obsidian work done chapter by chapter - clearly more 'book' related than papers. But nice walk through, so thanks again.
Hello, I started my literature review a few weeks ago for my PhD, and this video has helped me so much and saved a lot of time. Thank you so much. I just have one question: I am trying to cite some papers using citekey before they are created in the obsidian and adding them later. I made sure they are all related already, but I neither get the update links option nor am able to cite papers using the cite key. Can you help me with this? Thanks again!!
hard to really help with this in youtube comments, and depending on the complexity of the issue, i might not have the time, try opening a github issue in my FAQ repo with plenty of screenshots and a detailed step by step of what youre doing, trying to do, and what you can see is not working and that may be more conducive to finding a solution github.com/BryanJenksCommunity/FAQ/discussions
Bryan, when you talk about not needing Zotfile, do you keep the PDFs on your own local storage or do you use something like Google Drive for the PDFs? Looking at how many sources you have in your Zotero, it seems like the PDFs are going to end up eating up a lot of disc space?
They’re stored in the zotero database so yes on my system but also synced to the zotero cloud service. They’re PDF’s not video files, the footprint is not that significant
Hi Bryan, I've encountered a problem with the newest version of obsidian. After I updated it, whenever I wished to import a paper from Zotero, it would always show "error retrieving data: unexpected end of JSON input ". I was wondering what can I do to fix this problem.
First of all - thank you very much for this video! I love where this videos goes to but I am yet not able to get there. I am missing the part where I can get the code for the highlightr. I would be delighted if you could help out with that :)
the highlightr code is in my css theme which is part of the template vault that i give away with newsletter signups and/or sponsorship to my template vault
might need to deactivate vim mode in the settings, i always forget to turn that off and the research table is built from tags, so you'd need to use my tagging system to get the notes to show up in there
Thank you again@@BryanJenks for your super quick and helpful response, deactivating vim key bindings in options/editor indeed resolved that issue. I found that some of the highlighting colors came out different from how I marked them in Zotero. Could resolve it for all colors but purple by typing in different color codes/names in .obsidian\themes\Bryans Gruvbox Purple in zotero still results in hltr-blue in obsidian for some reason. How do you make your tags show up in front of the filenames in your left side-bar? Really like your tagging system and want to adopt it but have not fully figured out how to make it work yet. As far as I understand, automatically renaming papers in the format "& 2023-11-08 New Caledonia" only works when not previously tagged in zotero, otherwise the format remains citekey (seems as if the tags there cause some error). Weirdly, it also does not import my highlighted text and comments for the ones in the format "& 2023-11-08 New Caledonia" but only for the citekey-format
Hi, my purple annotations turns blue in obsidian. there is a problem with colors and when I try to fix it based on your tutorial highlights disappear. how can I fix it? seems like it does not work with things theme. what am I doing wrong?
There isn’t enough information in this comment to help me troubleshoot your problem. I’d need to see plugin settings, your theme file, and other data to have a vague idea of what is going on in your vault. Refer to my FAQ repo for questions with examples and screenshots if you need help
Hello. Thank you fior everything. But since zotero 7 the paper template doesn't succeed to get the page numbre of annotations right for me. Nothing appears. Is there any solutions? thanx again @Bryan
Do you think it is possible to not have the keywords as "tag1, tag2, tag3, ..." into properties section but rather as "[[tag1]], [[tag2]], [[tag3]], [[..]]" so you can use them as new pages?
hi! i don't understand coding too well but i tried my best to follow your instructions step by step. I have some troubles importing the papers according to your template. the
ok so i've found the problem to be in the filename considering my journal had a colon in it ":", do you have any tips to overcome this? I think deleting a colon on every one of my journals will be cumbersome
you hit the same issue as me recently, yes, the invalid characters in the paper names from zotero have been causing some issues and ive started working on patching those issues in the template so it doesnt happen again, but thats only in the sponsored vault, so here's the updated code to fix that particular issue: notice the " | replace..." code, this will handle the colon and here is it handling all the special characters that obisidan hates in the file names
This is nice!! : ) But I am curious about why you chose to import highlights as independent HTML colored lines to represent highlights colors instead of using a full color callout for each hihglight? Is it because of space? is it because is more "future proof" to use HTML? just personal preference? I am interested. Thanks!
ok, I think I found a potential disadvantage for the using of callouts as highlights containers. Block references to bullet points callouts inside of callouts do not work properly (it applies the same block reference for both top and chindren bullets and this is not nice). Also editing bullet points inside callouts is not very firendly. Maybe you did it because of this.
What do you think about the latest Zotero update that allows you to read and annotate epubs and web articles? I think this is a great solution because for a long time I was looking for something that would allow me to store annotations of PDFs, EPUBs and web articles in one place. Now I'm waiting for Zotero to be released on Android and I will be able to pleasantly read and annotate everything in Zotero, regardless of its format. Will this change have any impact on your current workflow?
for webpages i still use raindrop because of the retained copy and it now has highlight features that can sync through readwise so that still works for me, and epub might work within zotero for me, as im not sure how if at all that may work with the existing kind;e --> readwise workflow i use, thanks for the info! didnt know about this update
I sadly didn't understand, how you added the css. for highliter. You used a completly different programm and you copy-pasted something in and I didn't understand what :(
that was just VSCode looking at the CSS file. it doesnt matter what app you use to open the CSS file as long as you can edit the text within it. notepad on windows, textedit on mac, doesnt matter.

Hi Your work is great!!!! I downloaded your vault to transfer annotated articles from zotero to obsidian. Unfortunately it doesn't work: it appears "error retrieving item data: unexpected end of Json input" What can I do? Hi Gaetano
Really great content as an academic, Bryan - Very helpful! I stuble into a problem where if the {{title}} kontains a : (colon), zotero intergration won´t create the file because filenames or aliases can´t contain colons? Any workaroud? Thanks again :)
Hi! I am new here, but your problem can be solved by adding additional line in pure JS that removes colon. Here is the version with added one (I do not include date in note title).
Fantastic i was wondering how a Zotero-Obsidian workflow would look like. Quick question, how many hours a day do you spend researching or making Obsidian notes? i'm having issues making my vault, but i feel its due to me trying to literally live in the vault rather than use it properly.
Does anyone know how Bryan is typing ",inbox" and getting the inbox emoji. is it a plugin or AutoHotkey scripting? I like the use of emoji as tags and right now I'm searching emojipedia and copying the emoji to use in the settings (plugins doesn't work in the settings). For writing in the notes, I am using the Emoji toolbar plugin when writing notes
@@BryanJenks Thanks. I just started using Obsidian for my academic research (first year PhD student). After watching your video, I am motivated to learn and use Obsidian to organize everything going on in my life, starting with my literature review. Thank you for making such a Great Video :)
Honest critical review: Starts as a very basic tutorial, ends up as rather complicated, incomplete guide, where you copy paste stuff from the template that you need to look for in comments and then sign up for. At the end, mentions this workflow might not even be suited for academics and that you cannot reimport references from Zotero if you don't want to break code block links. In summary, it ends up being a guide on how to setup technical and estetic stuff for a workflow, but describes the workflow only minimally - I would have loved to see more examples of writing some notes, creating references, where do notes and thoughts go etc. (At least in the core way, I know stuff can get pretty complicated for Obsidian easily).
thanks for the feedback, i did get the same vibe myself once this was said and done, its hard to explain complex stuff simply some times, and i didnt want to bore people with lots of typing out of the code and template stuff. though there is a signup required, i do give all the templates away for free so hopefully thats a small consolation. for the academic iterative export of a paper i did finish a proof of concept of that on my sponsors only vault in a github issue, but if anyone wants that they can just email me about it at some point its even harder to cover everyones use cases when i really only focus on what im doing in obsidian and breaking it down. thanks again for the feedback, im definitely my harshest critic but you put things forward politely and i appreciate that
By some chance, you see this... I have an issue where when my annotations are being imported into Obsidian the blue and purple are combined only to be blue. Any idea what might be happening? I am using the method described in this video. So strange! Thanks for the video! It was extremely helpful!
@@BryanJenks Thanks! I just found a thread on the Obsidian forum that discusses this exact problem! Hoping to find a solution. Thanks again for the video!
the older but free version you can get from my newsletter: bryanjenkstech.ck.page/d4ec0713d5 the cutting edge version you can get from supporting me on github sponsors: github.com/sponsors/tallguyjenks
are there any error messages that pop up or anything in the developer console? check that the name of the paper in zotero doesnt have any invalid characters in the title as that is one problem ive had to fix recently
@@BryanJenks I did get error messages (Templater Error: File name cannot contain characters:l/) while importing articles with special characters in their titles, and obsidian will use the citekey as the title in this case. This is kinda annoying especially considering so many papers today are titles with those symbols.😢
can you share your css file for highlighter? The video is truly amazing, all the videos from the channel shows the capacites of obsidian, and how we can improve our vault Thks, and greetings from Brasil
most of what i share is available from signing up to my newsletter or from my sponsors only template vault: bryanjenkstech.ck.page/d4ec0713d5 github.com/sponsors/tallguyjenks
Great guide, thanks. Going back to this now that I finally got medication for my ADHD. For Windows, I found that this line in the file renaming script solves any filename issues: title = title.replace(/[:\?\*|\/\\]/g, "");
I found this video interesting and understand that you aren't working in academia but I think that connecting articles or papers in Obsidian is actually pointless from a research point of view. When doing research we need to extract the information from the papers in Zotero and then use Obsidian to create notes on concepts and ideas, creating links between these ideas found in the papers. This way Obsidian can be used as a way to link the ideas and concepts you learn instead of linking your papers (based on its contents) which ResearchRabbit already does with AI within seconds and for free.
true, connecting papers to each other in obsidian is technically unecessary which is why i dont put a lot of effort into making that a robust part of the workflow, because ultimately what i link are the ideas themselves together and each of those ideas stem from a paper or papers so ultimately they are still connected in a way. there are some people who want things that others might not so even if its not necessary im not exactly aiming to show "ThE bEsT wOrKfLoW oF tHeM aLl"
I am floored with how much effort has been put into this section of your vault. Thank you for sharing with the unenlightened non-programming masses, it is much appreciated.

Any ideas?
im not sure actually, it pops into the foreground with focus for me
I skimmed through parts of the video, but I couldn't find what I was looking for, which was how you implement taking atomic notes into all this, something I remember seeing in your 2021 setup. Do you simply work with the highlights and write out your thoughts within 1 article/book/podcast now, and use the quotes directly for canvas stuff?
check out my autism research workflow video, you may see more of what you were after in that video :)
Hey Bryan, this is a great workflow but it seems like I will get the most out of it if I have the same or similar zotero set up as you have going with the tags and icons and all. So some questions:
@@BryanJenks i see, and for the related lit/papers, how were you able to compile them for each paper?
Need help with this aswell
might be your display view, live or source, or reading, check the mode
You have applied custom formatting into all sorts of things such as Theme to be applied to highlightr 11:59 and etc. How should I find those custom formattings/settings?
In the theme file of my template vault
@@BryanJenks How should I find it? Your vault?
As always, thank you so much Bryan.
Please how do I get your templates? Having a hard time with finding it.
Thank you
you can get my template vault's static release by signing up to my newsletter here: bryanjenkstech.ck.page/d4ec0713d5
or you can get the sponsors only version by sponsoring at: github.com/sponsors/tallguyjenks
Thx alot, will give this one a try. Btw I just stumbled upon this in your Video. How do you write your tags? like in 22:22. It seems you use something like ",inbox" or ",rs" but how do you execute this to be a tag? I'm using your Newsletter Vault right now.
its a text replacement snippet. on mac im using the alfred app, but there are plenty of programs for other platforms that can do the same thing
Seems like I have the problem where only for some books the metadata will transfer as Obsidian properties but for most it will just be a plain text.
sounds like an issue of the metadata not entered into zotero for it to pass through to obsidian, that was an issue for many of my items
Callouts... via callout manager rather than Admonition plugin... so will need to check for clashes (or swap back to CM rather than A plugin).
I usually use zotero for papers and not books so in my case this issue didn’t come up 🤷🏻♂️
Hello, I started my literature review a few weeks ago for my PhD, and this video has helped me so much and saved a lot of time. Thank you so much.
I just have one question: I am trying to cite some papers using citekey before they are created in the obsidian and adding them later. I made sure they are all related already, but I neither get the update links option nor am able to cite papers using the cite key. Can you help me with this? Thanks again!!
hard to really help with this in youtube comments, and depending on the complexity of the issue, i might not have the time, try opening a github issue in my FAQ repo with plenty of screenshots and a detailed step by step of what youre doing, trying to do, and what you can see is not working and that may be more conducive to finding a solution

I was wondering what can I do to fix this problem.
not sure, i just tested with the latest versions of everything and i have no issues
same.. did you find an solution?
@@gustavo_jose2 not yet.
@@王毓昀 hey, did you solve it? i have the same issue :(
First of all - thank you very much for this video! I love where this videos goes to but I am yet not able to get there. I am missing the part where I can get the code for the highlightr. I would be delighted if you could help out with that :)
the highlightr code is in my css theme which is part of the template vault that i give away with newsletter signups and/or sponsorship to my template vault
Thank you so so much for all this great work of yours
might need to deactivate vim mode in the settings, i always forget to turn that off and the research table is built from tags, so you'd need to use my tagging system to get the notes to show up in there
Thank you again@@BryanJenks for your super quick and helpful response, deactivating vim key bindings in options/editor indeed resolved that issue.
I found that some of the highlighting colors came out different from how I marked them in Zotero.
Could resolve it for all colors but purple by typing in different color codes/names in .obsidian\themes\Bryans Gruvbox
Purple in zotero still results in hltr-blue in obsidian for some reason.
Outstanding!
thank you!
Hello. Thank you fior everything.
But since zotero 7 the paper template doesn't succeed to get the page numbre of annotations right for me. Nothing appears.
Is there any solutions?
thanx again
@Bryan
mmmm ill have to look into it 🤔️
Where is you css file for highlighter ?
i dont have a distinct file for it, i have the code in my personal theme
@@BryanJenks Hi thank you, where could we find the code ?
Do you think it is possible to not have the keywords as "tag1, tag2, tag3, ..." into properties section but rather as "[[tag1]], [[tag2]], [[tag3]], [[..]]" so you can use them as new pages?
you can do that yes, and i have some workflows where i do that
Thanks. Great tutorial. 🐄
Thanks! 🐄
hi! i don't understand coding too well but i tried my best to follow your instructions step by step. I have some troubles importing the papers according to your template. the
ok so i've found the problem to be in the filename considering my journal had a colon in it ":", do you have any tips to overcome this? I think deleting a colon on every one of my journals will be cumbersome
you hit the same issue as me recently, yes, the invalid characters in the paper names from zotero have been causing some issues and ive started working on patching those issues in the template so it doesnt happen again, but thats only in the sponsored vault, so here's the updated code to fix that particular issue:
notice the " | replace..." code, this will handle the colon and here is it handling all the special characters that obisidan hates in the file names
Maybe you did it because of this.
you got it, the block references wont play nice with the callout blocks :)
Can’t find template code for highlighter in the vault. Can you share the link to css file.
in my template vault the code is in the css file provided
Hello, I'm editing the theme.css file with visual studio code, but I can't find the Bryans Gruvbox.css? sould be in themes folder?
Where can I buy your template? or the content for the papter notes?
it should be in the themes folder of the template vault
where is the settings? i can't find it. plus will it work with Zotero 7
ctrl/cmd + ,
I sadly didn't understand, how you added the css. for highliter. You used a completly different programm and you copy-pasted something in and I didn't understand what :(
that was just VSCode looking at the CSS file. it doesnt matter what app you use to open the CSS file as long as you can edit the text within it. notepad on windows, textedit on mac, doesnt matter.
Hi
Your work is great!!!!
I downloaded your vault to transfer annotated articles from zotero to obsidian.
Unfortunately it doesn't work: it appears "error retrieving item data: unexpected end of Json input"
What can I do?
Hi

i dont troubleshoot in youtube comments, if you're a sponsor, please open a discussion/issue on the sponsors vault
Really great content as an academic, Bryan - Very helpful! I stuble into a problem where if the {{title}} kontains a : (colon), zotero intergration won´t create the file because filenames or aliases can´t contain colons? Any workaroud? Thanks again :)
Yes! I ran into something similar and there is a trick with the template syntax
Try {{title | escape}}
Hi! I am new here, but your problem can be solved by adding additional line in pure JS that removes colon. Here is the version with added one (I do not include date in note title).
@@beketamirkhanov2904 as someone who doesn't know what the hell theyre doing with code THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS
Fantastic i was wondering how a Zotero-Obsidian workflow would look like. Quick question, how many hours a day do you spend researching or making Obsidian notes? i'm having issues making my vault, but i feel its due to me trying to literally live in the vault rather than use it properly.
i dont track it so i have no idea how much time on average
@@BryanJenks thank you!
For writing in the notes, I am using the Emoji toolbar plugin when writing notes
snippet replacement with the alfred app on mac but any text replacement tool would work fine for that functionality
(At least in the core way, I know stuff can get pretty complicated for Obsidian easily).
thanks for the feedback, i did get the same vibe myself once this was said and done, its hard to explain complex stuff simply some times, and i didnt want to bore people with lots of typing out of the code and template stuff.
though there is a signup required, i do give all the templates away for free so hopefully thats a small consolation.
for the academic iterative export of a paper i did finish a proof of concept of that on my sponsors only vault in a github issue, but if anyone wants that they can just email me about it
at some point its even harder to cover everyones use cases when i really only focus on what im doing in obsidian and breaking it down.
thanks again for the feedback, im definitely my harshest critic but you put things forward politely and i appreciate that
Where can I download the template. I looked for it everywhere and couldn't find it.
Newsletter template
By some chance, you see this... I have an issue where when my annotations are being imported into Obsidian the blue and purple are combined only to be blue. Any idea what might be happening? I am using the method described in this video. So strange! Thanks for the video! It was extremely helpful!
(To be clear, when I export the annotations as a note in the Zotero app, it works just fine and both colors are there)
your color mapping in your advanced settings may be off, im not sure i dont have this issue
@@BryanJenks Thanks! I just found a thread on the Obsidian forum that discusses this exact problem! Hoping to find a solution. Thanks again for the video!

How so?
I tried everything. But every time I import a Zotero paper the title does not change in Obsidian. Please help! I did everything in the video.
are there any error messages that pop up or anything in the developer console? check that the name of the paper in zotero doesnt have any invalid characters in the title as that is one problem ive had to fix recently
@@BryanJenks I did get error messages (Templater Error: File name cannot contain characters:l/) while importing articles with special characters in their titles, and obsidian will use the citekey as the title in this case. This is kinda annoying especially considering so many papers today are titles with those symbols.😢
I fixed this error recently in my template but haven’t propagated it to my free vault just yet, email me and I’ll hook you up

Great guide, thanks. Going back to this now that I finally got medication for my ADHD. For Windows, I found that this line in the file renaming script solves any filename issues:
title = title.replace(/[:\?\*|\/\\]/g, "");
yay!
Why another Zotero video? We need a new one, for Zotero 7 😀😀
things keep changing and updating so i need to keep the most relevant information out there hence newer videos
This way Obsidian can be used as a way to link the ideas and concepts you learn instead of linking your papers (based on its contents) which ResearchRabbit already does with AI within seconds and for free.
true, connecting papers to each other in obsidian is technically unecessary which is why i dont put a lot of effort into making that a robust part of the workflow, because ultimately what i link are the ideas themselves together and each of those ideas stem from a paper or papers so ultimately they are still connected in a way. there are some people who want things that others might not so even if its not necessary im not exactly aiming to show "ThE bEsT wOrKfLoW oF tHeM aLl"
what about ZotLit plugin?😂
havent heard about that one!
