To someone that has played plenty of Catan, with Seafarers, and C&K - this doesn't seem that appealing to me. Would I try it, of course! But I am not very compelled to purchase. To me seafarers + C&K together is the ultimate combination, with base Catan feeling stale. There already is a Dragon expansion btw - that's fun too.
Yeah great point on the Dragons expansion and it certainly ticks a few boxes especially the module that let's you hunt dragons. I think this could be expanded more though, in my head perhaps there is minor conflict between players and use of magic, or the hexes are simultaneously worker placement spots as well as resource gathering. The Catan world is so amazing there isn't much they couldn't achieve with this base system. In regards to your first point, I'm definitely the opposite. For me this is an upgrade over base and Seafarers. Perhaps it is that burnout from playing the original so much but to me this is more appealing and satisfying experience. Appreciate the comment 👍
It seems like a neat concept that I would like to play. But it's really expensive for not being much different than base Catan especially for someone who already owns base Catan
This is certainly a fair point. If you own the original, then best to save your money. But it's a fun twist on the original, so hopefully you still get to play it someday 👍
Hello, my apologies I am currently on holidays in Canada and only got internet access. My preference is Dawn of Humankind mainly because it's got more complexity. But New Energies is a lot closer to the original Catan in the core mechanics and gameplay. If you want something more challenging and slightly different to the original game, then I can highly recommend Dawn of Humankind. I hope that helps 😃
I've never played the original Catan. Should I get New Energies or the original game? Could I play the original Catan with the New Energies set by simply leaving the new components aside?
Yes you can play 99% of the original Catan with what is in the box of New Energies. The only caveat to this is that some (very few) of the development cards refer to hazards and power Plants. But the beautiful thing is these are not deal breakers as they also talk about taking resources or moving the inspector as other options on those cards. So treat inspector as robber, don't include power Plants, science cards and Events and you have the original Catan with nicer art.
I honestly think if both games are the same price, get New Energies! You can play it like the original game for a bit and when you are ready you can add in the New Energies extra components
Great video played this first time at pax Aus yesterday.. instant purchase for me. Love original no pro at that but like the events dimensions being added..
Mate I was at Pax Aus on Friday and Saturday 😁 Yeah loved seeing it setup for people to play. Like most of the new versions of Catans, it's just more of the same formula with extra twists but that's not a bad thing!
Thank you for explaining the new additions with this new game. I would say for one who has never played catan, go ahead and start with this version, otherwise, just buy C&K expansion, way better
I should have mentioned this in the review, unfortunately just like the original Catan this is 3-4 players only. For a 2 player Catan you can try Catan Starfarers Duel, but this is space themed and very different to core Catan.
I would say that some of the old expansions could work theoretically but the old classic style visually may clash with the new modern hexes. It got me wondering though, I might try and give this a try and see how it looks 🤔
This looks really interesting, I do feel like there's a few more obstacles to getting new playesr to play, Catan has historically been such a great gateway game this seems a tad more involved
This is a really fair assessment, this is more complicated than base Catan for sure. I see it through the lens of an experienced gamers who enjoys the extra gameplay additions. Though you are spot on that as a gateway game tge original Catan is perfect in its mix of strategy and simplicity!
The best yhing about New Energies are the Woden Tiles. Again like in the beginning you get in from Wood and not Plastic. Catan elongated version. Tru to say is i like the old grafics bether :D But the woden parts are so good... Simply buy the new one and you can choos witch to play :D Ther schould by catan Enviroment, wher the map is 3 dimesional... more vor Freeks :/ like my :P
Seems really cool. But I probably won't get it because of the player count. I prefer to buy only games that have a solo. So for a new Catan, a solo would be nice. That wizard idea you had sounds good too!
Great point Donna, looking back on the video I should have mentioned that a lot of this video is based on assumed knowledge of the original Catan. That includes that this is still only a 3-4 player games and so again it mimics the original. I couldn't agree more that Catan truly needs a proper solo in its franchise. I think for now besides the 2 player only versions, I always treat Catan as best at 4 players.
I can completely respect that. The original Catan is a masterpiece really, and slapping a new coat of paint over the top doesn't change people's love for the original.

Hello! Which game would you recommend between New Energies and Dawn of Humankind? Thank you ☺️

@@BangersProject New Energies is $40 AUD more at my LGS. I'm also not sure how it would work without knight cards and largest army

Thanks mate, great point with that expansion 👍
Can you play this with just 2 players and is it worth it for that

@@BangersProjectthere rivals of Catan too for two players!
I would probably prefer to just purchase some of the classic expansions, which i feel would not work too well with new energies

natural fiber? xD where I am from, we call this wood, sheep, hay and stone
Hahaha so true 😁 it's all about sounding eco friendly in this game, but yeah I still call it the original names when I play it as well

Haha sign me up to 3D Catan 😁 The wooden components are perfect and they all come in environmentally friendly packaging, which is quite nice 👍

I'll stay in the past.
