The last time France and England fought was probably not as long ago as you might think. During WW2 the Commander of the French Navy promised to scuttle their ships for fear of them falling into German hands - but failed to do so. This put Churchill in a difficult position. In 1940 he finally instructed the Royal Navy to do the job for them. The fleet was sunk and this resulted in the deaths of 1300 French servicemen.
In respect of Hong Kong, the UK obtained it on a 99 year lease in 1898. Time ran out and it was handed back to China in 1997.

About Hong Kong most of what you said about the lease was true but there was a part of it which was not under lease and was actually owned by the British and Thatcher tried to hang on to it but deemed if it did it would be lost to invasion anyway, so the best solution was to hand it back but with a clause for one country two systems for 50 years until 2047 which was going well until China decided to break the clause last year.

I always find American's soft spot for France to be a bit ironic, the seven year war was France trying conquor what became the US, and if it wasn't for Britian they would be speaking French there. The high taxes and the cause for the war of independance, was a direct result of the seven year war, when the French helped out mainly to stick it to Great Britian and get revenge. They were very much not a friend of the US up until that point, and after the war of independance, tried to spark a second revolution in the US after their own. Believing that the US form of Government didn't represent the people well enough.

Would have been much better if HK had an option to extend / become fully independent as they were effectively operating independently until China took over. At least we are making it easier for HK citizens to move to the UK now which is the least we can do to help those that want out especially as China is not respecting the agreements that were put in place to allow HK to operate independently although I doubt anyone ever actually thought they would.

The Gurka Regiment is the Golden Ticket for Nepalese men wishing to make a better lives for their families and competition to get in is very tough. Just addressing the first part of the video, Hong Kong was on a lease, so basically we agreed to give it back after a certain amount of time, we kept our part of the agreament and we gave it back once the time was up. One of the issues going on (just got this part from wiki, not great at explaining it myself)
The Sino-British Joint Declaration is a treaty signed between the United Kingdom and China on Hong Kong under Chinese sovereignty.[1] Signed on 19 December 1984 in Beijing,[2] the declaration describes the sovereign and administrative arrangement of Hong Kong after 1 July 1997, when the lease of the New Territories was set to expire according to the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory.
The treaty was signed by Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang and UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on behalf of their governments. It came into force when the instruments of ratification were exchanged on 27 May 1985, and was registered by the Chinese and British governments at the United Nations on 12 June 1985. In the Joint Declaration, the Chinese government stated that it would resume the exercise of its sovereignty over Hong Kong (including the British territories of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, and the leased New Territories) from 1 July 1997, and the British Government declared that it would hand over Hong Kong to China on 1 July 1997.
The Chinese government also declared its basic policies regarding Hong Kong in the document. In accordance with the "one country, two systems" principle agreed between the UK and China, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) would not practise the socialist system in mainland China, and Hong Kong's existing capitalist system and way of life would be unchanged for 50 years until 2047. The Joint Declaration requires these basic policies to be written in the Hong Kong Basic Law.
Whether the Declaration has practical effect after the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong is disputed by China, which said it is a "historical document that no longer had any practical significance", while the UK said that it is a "legally valid treaty to which it was committed to upholding"
So because China has started not following on what it agreed, we're our offering people from Hong Kong citinship in the UK, essentially to piss off China and the fact they are not respecting the one country two systems principle. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-53246899

Technically, the drive to take over much of Africa was to 'protect' and 'civilise' the local populous. While I'm sure horrors were done in the name of 'civilising', Britain took a lead in ending the African slave trade at great expense and for little/no gain other than the end of suffering. Unfortunately, they did not do this until after some British people had made a lot of money from the trade.
See 'Drachinifel's video 'Anti-Slavery Patrols - The West Africa Squadron' for more info.
