Re Mike Phillips-- even if he doesn’t score, he affects the game in different ways. I don’t think his other intangibles can be contained. The only thing that can contain him is early foul trouble so I will be closely watching how they try to bait him. Re David: I’ve noticed Topex has used a two guard lineup and has started using Ramiro and David together. So David doesn’t need to bring down the ball a lot.
The discussion about recruitment and player development in college basketball is indeed thought-provoking, and I appreciate how Maui and the rest of you guys brought this issue to light. While I understand the appeal of having a "one-and-done" player like QMB to bolster a team's championship aspirations, it does raise questions about the essence of collegiate sports. College basketball has historically been about nurturing talent within a program, instilling school pride, and building a team that reflects the institution's culture and values. When a team heavily relies on external recruits-whether "hired" or "recruited"-to secure a championship, it can create a perception that the focus has shifted from development to simply winning at all costs. That said, I also see the argument for schools wanting to remain competitive in an increasingly professionalized UAAP landscape. Programs like UP undoubtedly aim to capitalize on available resources to elevate their standing. However, as Nico Rocha aptly pointed out in his commentary, balance is key. Over-reliance on external talent can overshadow the importance of developing homegrown players who truly embody the spirit and identity of the program. In the end, it’s not just about winning but how championships are built-through resilience, teamwork, and genuine growth. Perhaps this is an opportunity for UP and other schools to reflect on how their recruitment strategies align with the values of collegiate sports. Kudos to the Boleros team for fostering this critical dialogue. It’s these kinds of discussions that help us look beyond the box score and truly appreciate the essence of the game.
@@pol_cruzand which is why the QMB recruitment I think hurts UP especially if they don’t win the title this year. Maayos naman si Gani, Udodo and Alter nung preseason. It’s La Salle’s title to lose. They have the best player and the better shooters. Topex also for all his antics is a better tactician compared to Coach Gold. Wag naman sana sweep para may thrill.
1. The presumption that there will be at least a championship game that will last three and one-half hours is definitely a swak. The sad reality is that, bureaucrats are also existing in private organizations and associations, not only in government agencies and institutions. With that saying, it has been observed that apparently, the strong and free exercise of political will is hardly achieved both in public or government and, private entities in the Philippines. Therefore, a typical collegiate men's basketball championship game which ought to reasonably last for two hours and thirty minutes will atypically finish up to three and a half to four hours. 2. The assertion that the U.P. Fighting Maroons' defense strategy is to let Kevin Quiambao cook is absolutely a sablay. Let's not forget that he's the MVP of the respective division in the current UAAP season never for nothing. He had garnered an average of 16.64 ppg. for the entire eliminations round. Thus, he would be deadly without an iota of doubt if he will be uncontested and allowed to shoot to the basket. Not unbeknownst to all, he is the star player of La Salle but if someone or anyone among the U.P. Fighting Maroons will impede or at least, slow down the heart and soul of the De La Salle Green Archers, that'll surely be a different story. However, I highly doubt that Motor Mike or as you say, Gameshark Mike could be stopped or restrained. 3. The general declaration that three-point shooting is the most important stats in this series is resoundingly a sablay. In spite of the fact that the great Stephen Curry revolutionized the game of basketball, it will be better if we make certain qualifications. Not every UAAP collegiate basketball player belonging to the team championship finalists could shoot from outside the three-point or rainbow area consistently in each and every game. It requires mental toughness, muscle memory, good body rhythm and impeccable timing. Shooting threes should be the exception and it mustn't be the general rule. Let those who do it best and with above-average precision, focus, master and execute it frequently. In comparison, we ought to put greater value, lest equal weight in terms of offense to perimeter shooting, scoring in the paint and foul throw shooting. If consistently done with success, the latter three afore-mentioned type of shooting could win games, much more, championships, vis-a-vis three-point shooting with fewer shot attempts, lower field goal percentages and, inconsistent or poor executions. 4. I'm neither a U.P. Fighting Maroons fan, supporter or bandwagoner but to answer the proposition that Harold Alarcon should be the center of the offensive plays of the U.P. Fighting Maroons while JD Cagulangan will be better to be a distributor is a swak. It is observed that Harold Alarcon is a budding collegiate basketball player since he exhibited courageous and decent offensive acrobatic plays and moves. In addition, one could see through this young man when he plays, his fiery ambition and, strong motivation and drive to succeed in life. In contrast, JD Cagulangan's greatness in the court gradually dwindled down since they had won the championship crown in season 84. You may say my opinion is biased since I sit in the opposite side of the fence. However, I still want to make it known that apparently, the greatness of JD Cagulangan has been overshadowed and, is being eclipsed by those of Kevin Quiambao and Mike Phillips. 5. The hypothesis that Coach Topex has to go with KQ at number 5 appears to be a sablay nonetheless. Unlike the distinct situation in the finals of season 86, there are more alternative or should I say lucrative options for the center position. Worse comes to worse if for one reason or another, players are found difficult or scarce to find so as to be fielded to position number 5, that's solely when Coach Topex could reassign Kevin Quiambao to fill it in. Otherwise, there are most likely far more than two who could play center. True to its spirit, Mike Phillips has truly embraced his moniker, "Motor Mike," which explains why he turns into monstrous and beast mode in the court, unhampered as ever as if he'll not be gassed. On the other hand, Raven Gonzales could be considered as a viable alternative for the same player position as he's strong in the paint both offensively and defensively since there were numerous instances, he rebounded some missed shots and then, shot them straight to the basket while in the paint. And talking about Henry Agunanne, he is now picking up the pieces as he began shaping up during the last two games of the Green Archers. To boot, he exhibited a much stronger defense, good hustles and made some unexpected dunks during the semi-finals game against the Adamson Soaring Falcons. 6. The theorem that the winner of the match up between Michael Phillips and Quentin Millora Brown is the decider as to who between their respective teams will be UAAP season 87 chanpion, is a sablay. On this, I tend to agree with Gab. There is no doubt that both star players, Kevin Quiambao and Mike Phillips could hand and/or help bring DLSU its impending 11th championship crown. However despite that, it's not always a guarantee. This explains unequivocally why the role of VJ David is crucial considering he is both a pointguard and an offensive scorer. And he's proven more than sufficiently that he did answer to the call to fill in this seemingly empty spot and position for the La Salle Green Archers. What remains for him to accomplish is to cement this role when he embraces it during the championship finals games and thus, be considered and recognized as one of La Salle's greats too. To conclude, my fearless prediction is that, the De La Salle Green Archers will win and snatch the championship crown in merely two games. I'm saying this because firstly, I am a living witness to the non-verbal language and facial communication and, body movements of both the players and coaches when I watched them almost all and every game live during the eliminations regardless if they were held in the arena, coliseum or gym. I observed and watched them how they grinded and persevered relentlessly with much resilience and hardwork just to achieve excellence in the sports of collegiate basketball. Secondly but more importantly, the inculcation of good values, practice of a winning culture, the fraternal inclusion of everyone in one solid close-knit kindred and brotherhood and, transference of gentle, positive and kind spirit onto the players by and from the coaches most especially, Coach Topex Robinson. This isn't of course to play self-righteous on the part of the DLSU Team in order to denote and impute that the U.P. players and coaches are bad and nasty. We may not know since in reality, they might be good too and/or trying very hard to be or, as a matter of fact, they are better persons. Nevertheless and to sum it all, in the game we call basketball, it behooves me to state the famous Filipino or Tagalog saying, "Bilog ang bola," and that, life is sometimes unfair in the human point of view as attested to by Matthew 5:45, "He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."

Saks lang yung let KQ cook. UP was burned by Finals Thirdy a few seasons back and arguably that was a better team KQ hasn't have a triple double yet this Season. Maybe this Final series? And this is the best shot for UP to win it all. Next year, DLSU will have a deeper line up than UP and JD will finally graduate this year
Agree it might be more challenging for UP to win next year. Although one cannot discount the impact of having a generational talent like KQ. If he returns for next season they ate probably locks. Hard to replace both JD and QMB and maybe Alarcon. -Maui
Lopez and probably Torculas are the only ones who can guard KQ this year. The only problem with putting Lopez on KQ right away is that he tends to give up a lot of really silly fouls. I really don’t know what’s the big deal with Bayla, kung si Austria nga naiiwanan siya, si KQ pa.
Yep. Foul trouble will be the biggest hurdle for Lopez in his match-up with KQ Agree kay Bayla 😂 his defense is not where it needs to be at the moment. Torres and Alarcon are better options
There will be a game that will be 3 1/2 hours long. - Sablay (hopefully), I'm sure organizers are aware at this point of the complaints raised by almost everyone. UP's best defensive strategy will be to let KQ cook. - Sablay, DLSU has shown at times this season that they can blast teams even with KQ having a so-so game. Too much of a risk to leave everybody else open, especially with KQ being a willing passer Three point shooting is the most important stat in this series. - Swak, UP has shot atrociously bad from 3 against DLSU dating back to last year's series. If UP can hit their 3s, they will win the series. UP should run the offense more through Alarcon and let JD be a distributor. - Saks, Alarcon has had 2 consecutive hot games but question is can it carry over to the finals, knowing well that the defense will be focused on him as a result of those past 2 games. Coach Topex has to go with KQ at the 5 more often. - Saks, would be nice to have KQ draw QMB away from the paint, but UP can easily counter by switching defenders, forcing other guys from DLSU to make plays. Quite a gamble to be honest QMB vs Mike Phillips is the most important match-up of this series. - Saks, if Mike gets into foul trouble, DLSU has capable bigs to replace him in the rotation. They can even go small ball with Raven at the 5 and KQ at 4. If QMB gets into foul trouble, I won't be too happy having Stevens, Alter, and Udodo match up with Mike, etc #Cedar&Co

UP in 2 games at madaming iiyak na lumots. Super confident e na akala mo unbeatable yung team nila. These people make fun of UP's consecutive runner up finishes not understanding where UP came from a decade ago. Hello 0-14 seasons.
I have been a constant listener/fan of your podcast, compared to the other one, i find yours more informative & fun. But lately, you've been picking on & bashing this UP player (Belmonte), it's almost bordering to BULLYING. Hindi ko alam kung anong ginawa ng player na ito na halos sirain na ninyo ang career the way you speak ill of him. Huhu...😥😥
We call it as we see it is. We’re not nitpicking. I was actually pushing for Belmonte mins because I see his potential. Its just that we think other players deserve more playing time now during the most crucial stretch of the season for UP to succeed. We have been critical of other players too from other teams like Quetevis, Agunane, Alforque, etc. So sorry if it seemed like we were bullying Belmonte. Still believe he has the potential to be great. -Maui
Una sa lahat, great episode. Lumipas ang 1hr nang hindi ko namamalayan 😅. Here's my personal take sa mga statements presented: 1. Swak...kasi kung nagawa ng sponsors during elims na paabutin to almost 3hrs yung games, they may as well milk the cash out of the last 2-3 games of the season on every available chance they could get. 2. Saks lang. KQ is a threat whether he cooks alone or with help from his team. He has shown that he could carry his team on his own. Letting him cook is like giving a free pass to DLSU sa championship. Not entirely swak because of the fatigue factor. 3. Saks na medyo leaning on swak. I still think rebound is tied to 3pt-shots as the most game-defining stats of the game. Both teams have shown na kaya pumutok ng 3pt-shot efficiency nila. If both teams shoot really well on a particular game, it would eventually cancel out each other. Now if any of those becomes a missed field goal, a simple rebound would eventually turn the tide of the game. 4. Saks lang rin. Why? Because Alarcon has also shown na may mga games na talagang struggling sya. On the other hand, nothing can take away JD's decision-making and leadership skills. And when he clicks, he really clicks! But I strongly agree, maybe it's time na both of them have to cook on the same game...no more you're turn my turn moments. 5. Sablay. For me, Phillips is still Topex's winning key when the latter is playing 5 and KQ is demolishing and causing confusion to UP when he's playing any position other than 5. 6. Swak na swak parang #Cedar&Co . Tulad ng sinabi ninyo noon referencing Slamdunk (at related sa sinabi ko sa statement #3): he who manages to crash the board more (and aggressively) will give his team the better chance of earning the W! So it's definitely a kaiju-like battle between these big men as they'll be pivotal sa bawat much-needed ball possession. My prediction...UP in game 3.

Boring na ng "rivalry", all-time low turnout. Worse than the dark ages Mas gusto to lasalle-up, lalo kung may "bakbakan." Supposedly ma-angas vs matapang schools🤣
Maybe in the future if both teams are on the same level. Currently, DLSU is just way better than Ateneo DLSU vs UP is infinitely more entertaining right now
UP vs Ateneo in 84-86 were good years for their own rivalry 2 times finals and 1 final 4. This was the time when Coach Tab still had a good lineup and his head to head with Coach Gold was toe to toe. Mas maraming tao ang friends and alumni ng both UP and Ateneo given that they’re the top 2 Universities and campuses close to each other.

UP was burned by Finals Thirdy a few seasons back and arguably that was a better team
KQ hasn't have a triple double yet this Season.
Yep. Foul trouble will be the biggest hurdle for Lopez in his match-up with KQ
Agree kay Bayla 😂 his defense is not where it needs to be at the moment. Torres and Alarcon are better options
first ❤ was waiting the while day for this
There will be a game that will be 3 1/2 hours long.
- Sablay (hopefully), I'm sure organizers are aware at this point of the complaints raised by almost everyone.
UP's best defensive strategy will be to let KQ cook.
- Sablay, DLSU has shown at times this season that they can blast teams even with KQ having a so-so game. Too much of a risk to leave everybody else open, especially with KQ being a willing passer
Three point shooting is the most important stat in this series.
Quite a gamble to be honest
QMB vs Mike Phillips is the most important match-up of this series.
- Saks, if Mike gets into foul trouble, DLSU has capable bigs to replace him in the rotation. They can even go small ball with Raven at the 5 and KQ at 4. If QMB gets into foul trouble, I won't be too happy having Stevens, Alter, and Udodo match up with Mike, etc

Ang makakahaba sa games sa Finals yung looooonngg intros. Hahahaha!!!
Hahahaahhaha i'm sure they'll have a ton of gimmicks
UP in 2 games at madaming iiyak na lumots. Super confident e na akala mo unbeatable yung team nila. These people make fun of UP's consecutive runner up finishes not understanding where UP came from a decade ago. Hello 0-14 seasons.
Then you’re not a real fan of basketball. Up feels they’re invincible. Yabang to death
Here's my personal take sa mga statements presented:

Sana DLSU vs ADMU nlang, championship kahit talo parang mas maganda to watch. Go La Salle! Go Ateneo pa rin.
Boring na ng "rivalry", all-time low turnout. Worse than the dark ages
Mas gusto to lasalle-up, lalo kung may "bakbakan." Supposedly ma-angas vs matapang schools🤣
Maybe in the future if both teams are on the same level. Currently, DLSU is just way better than Ateneo
DLSU vs UP is infinitely more entertaining right now
UP vs Ateneo in 84-86 were good years for their own rivalry 2 times finals and 1 final 4. This was the time when Coach Tab still had a good lineup and his head to head with Coach Gold was toe to toe. Mas maraming tao ang friends and alumni ng both UP and Ateneo given that they’re the top 2 Universities and campuses close to each other.
