Greenwood high school, located in a remote mountainous area, two students found themselves trapped and vulnerable. The place they once knew has changed in unsettling ways, haunted by evil creatures. Set in a fictitious world in the 1960s Taiwan under martial law, Detention, the story-driven atmospheric horror incorporated East Asian elements rarely used in games. Taoism, Buddhism, Chinese mythology, the game draws on local Taiwanese cultural references to tell an unique and terrifying story.
In this 2D atmospheric horror side scroller, players navigate the main characters in a classic point and click fashion to explore a high school where evil encroaches. While hiding from the rampaging monsters, you are to find items to interact with in the otherworldly rooms. And as more mysteries unveiled, the dark past of a cursed school will finally surface.

The bad ending fits for the game's atmosphere while the good ending fits for one's life finally resting in peace.
The first time I played it I got the good ending. Didn't know there was a bad ending lol.
The first ending (the good one) is so beautiful and peaceful, but sad at the same time. You can feel the loneliness and melancholy inside Wei 😭
But how does this happen? Wei died in the first part right?.

Wei spend his youth in prison for 15 years
I think both endings represent things that have both happened. In one ending you see Ray reminiscing her suicide, which is something that's happened before the game where she's just a lingered/ghost roaming around the school has even started. In the other ending (which I think is more heartbreaking), after he got out of prison, Wei visited the abandoned school again. Though they aren't actually meeting and communicating with one another, them sitting at that desk in the ending represents that they've finally made peace with their past. Visiting the school was probably the last part of Wei's journey to forgiving himself and accepting what happened, as, from his notebook, we can understand that he's already resigned to his mother and ms. Yin dying. I don't know if this is true or not, but I'd like to think that he also forgave Ray for her actions and has got to know that she killed herself because of that. On the other hand, Ray has discovered the destiny of Ms. Yin, Mr. Chang and Wei, saw that the latter managed to move on, and decided to move on too, putting an end to the purgatory in which her soul was roaming.

You... do realize that didnt actually happen, right? He was never actually trapped in the school, this whole game was just Ray reliving an amalgam of her guilt and nightmares.
You...do realise that he IS trapped too and is reliving HIS OWN amalgam of memories of guilt and nightmares, right? He isnt and never was physically trapped in the school...but if you are saying that Ray IS then i'm not sure what to say...both of them are trapped in the past and the game is about trying to let go so you can move on or be trapped reliving it forever...

This game is not banned, the banned one is called "Devotion". It is a similar game to this and it is developed by the same studio, this one is called "Detention".
My interpretation is that there is not good or bad ending. Both endings complement each other.
Ray is in a perpetual loop of guilt and she will not escape from it until she aknowledges her mistakes. Until then, her loop ends and resets the moment she "hanged" herself in the auditorium. How many resets have been? No idea. This is what we consider the "bad ending", the reset of the loop.
Our gameplay is considered a potential and definitive end of the loop. If Ray takes accountability of her action the guilt ends and she can move on. However, because she killed herself she is "condemned" to be a lingering ghost. You see, for eastern cultures the act of killing oneself is seen as a harmful action that will not end one's suffering but, rather, lead to another form of suffering.
Such a heartbreaking story. Literally one of the most moving games I've seen.
The endings were depressing
My theory for the story was that Ray had problems at home and when Ray's mother found out about Ray's father cheating she got him sent to prison, after that Ray ended up falling in love with one of her teachers and felt solace in some one that she thought would always be there for her but when the teacher's girlfriend Ms. Yin found out she scolded and told off the teacher which led to him being very distant towards Ray. Ray, in anger and impulse, decided to get rid of Ms. Yin by exposing her and the book club. This is why Instructor Bai came into the classroom to talk to Ms. Yin at the beginning of the game. When Ms. Yin eventually had to flee the country Wei and Chang were left to cover up the evidence of the book club but they were found out and Chang was sentenced to death while Wei was sentenced to prison. Ray's love interest also ended up dying or leaving (I'm not entirely sure) and Ray was left alone. Ray had lost everything her family, her love, and she had ruined the lives of her classmates and teacher, she felt such despair and sorrow that she ended up killing herself by hanging. Ray is now doomed to roam the halls of her old school until one day she can accept her faults and move on from her past.

Also, as far as I know, Ms. Yin wasn't his girlfriend, but she told him to end his relationship with Ray because that endangered the book club, since he was the one smuggling the books, and I guess that if he got caught dating a student, the club wouldn't have anyone to bring them books. So that's what Ms. Yin could've meant by saying "did you forget about us?" (That's part of a conversation Ray overheard)

The moral lesson of this game is how one mistake or decision can ruin or affect people around you and ruin your life because Ray snitched on the book club to Instructor Bai hoping to get Ms. Yin fired and get back in a relationship with Mr. Chang but what she didn't realize was that Chang was head of the book club along with Ms. Yin though Ms. Yin fled the country Mr. Chang was executed while the other students were imprisoned. Ray was shunned by her classmates and she felt really guilty that she committed suicide. I guess in the end after Ray became true to herself she can truly rest in peace. I can imagine Wei and Ray together starting a clean slate and start a relationship anew, Wei would become Ray's boyfriend and Ray would become Wei's girlfriend.
So all the evil spirits Ray found along the journey are basically the past sins that could stop her from finding redemption.
That's only if Ray continues denying everything.
In folklore, demons will continue to harass, stalk, and eventually kill people who've done wrong in their lives; they will "attach" themselves to one's sins. In order for someone to truly free themselves, they have to confess all of their crimes and wrongdoings and they have to be truly remorseful for it, which is the only way for demons to lose power over their victims.
You didn't read Wei's notebook, it has some informations in it (good end)

Now the significance of that chair and auditorium make sense now. I kept wondering why Ray would wake up in that same place every time. :
Why Ray!?!?! Im literally CRYING at the death of her
She ruined the lives of everyone in the book club and several of her superiors over something stupid. She killed herself at the school and her soul is bound there forever, repeating the horrors over and over for what she did. The ending suggests the school was to be demolished, meaning she could finally pass on.
When she suicide I am crying alot😭😭 . I couldn't give peace to her soul 😭😭 i ruin her second chance 😭😭

Hopefully Red Candle is making many more masterpieces like this and Devotion, because the "supernatural" horror scene is quite small with films and games.

The first ending was sad but the second ending had me staring at screen almost crying.
Is there any option......like choose between the endings or.....is it just random and differs from person to person..😅

No because i got the ending where ray h@nged herself and i cried so bad because i was incredibly invested in the storyline and getting a bad ending first try? The worst feeling man..
I pity Ray, i understand how it felt to have problems at home myself and trying to desperately search for a comfortable resort to hide away from your problems. Choices are so immensely critical and in the bad end she made her choice out of fear. It's as if when you get really mad during and argument and say something you haven't thought through, it wasn't your choice it just happened fast.
So both endings are true the bad shows ray hanging herself whilst the " true " one shows wei revisiting the school
Yep, the bad ending is when she couldn’t forget herself for what she did, hence, stucking in the eternal suffering loop of purgatory.
In the good ending, she has finally accept her guilt and forget herself, ending her eternal suffering
So what happens to Ray in the good ending?
Ray wanders the Earth as a lost soul, but in the Good ending, she accepts what actually happened, and is no longer doomed to relive the same nightmare. Eventually, she'll be reincarnated in a new form, in accordance with Buddhist belief.
She accepts her wrong doings, gets redemption, can now be reincarnated

_Who exactly is Wei?_
_Is he one of the students from the book club??_
_Why did we go from his perspective to Ray's?_
_Is everyone in that school got murdered?_
_Why is Wei the only one left there?? How long had he been in there??_

Wei was a junior classmate of ray, wei was the closest one to miss yin bc he was a part of the book club and he had a crush on ray
Actually, Ray committed suicide and she believed Wei died after saving her, then later Ray in the good ending finds peace within herself for all the mistakes she made and manages to move on. Whereas in reality, towards the end Wei appears (after 15 years) to the old, demolished school and recalled the past he had with Ray.

In a journal entry, it stated that the Chang was executed, Yin escaped and fought for Human Rights, and Wei went to jail for 15 years.
Wei is probably the only student from the book club Ray is well acquainted with, maybe that's why we got a glimpse of his perspective interspersed with Ray's memories playing out in the purgatory? Regardless,his perspective was needed too as he was closely affiliated with Yin (considering Yin is an important character, obviously)

After Ray ratted out the whole book club, almost all members of book club were get caught by KMT. The teacher Chang, who was in love with Ray, was executed. The Wei was setensed for 15 years(Ray thought he was excecuted too). And Miss Yin was escaped to US.
Ray did jump from the roof and killed herself. And her soul was trapped in school and experienced what she did before suicide, over and over. Until she can face her mistake and move on.
The tall guy with lantern is the messeger from hell, he will take the lost soul like Ray back to hell, and ready for next reincarnation, after she paid her guilt.
Ray in the game is always the ghost after she jumped from the roof. In Chinese tradition, we believe human's soul has 10 parts(三魂七魄). When somebody was killed by suicide or accident, his soul will break into pieces, that's why they can't remember all things. Those souls in the game were all Ray's soul piece, every soul piece keeps some memory. And you can't never reincarnation if you can't collect all of your soul pieces.

In the Chapter 4, when you talk to the ghost and choose the right answer, ghost will response and say: I am you. The wrong answer will not get response(just ...).

Can someone explain the plot summary?
For what I understand, this was the story of a girl who ratted out a bunch of people who where reading prohibited books during a time period in which Taiwan was under martial law, therefore if you were caught consuming certain types of media, you were going to be put in jail, or killed.
This is basically her going through her memories.
The spirits represent her guilt,the Lantern Specter is the truth,but she looks away from it,then there's the Lingering which also represents guilt but in another way,she holds her breath(Like shutting her mouth) to escape the guilt from ratting them out.

Erza Scarlet: Ray did suicide by jumping off the roof. In Taiwanese folks belief, if someone kills himself or herself, the soul or ghost has to repeat the experience repeatedly for a long long time. It's kinda related to Buddhism. Sadly, I had two friends who chose to end their lives in this way. Sigh... I hoped they have already gained their peace like Ray in the good ending.

About Wei's death in the begining, it was happened in Ray's purgatory. Wei in real was sentenced for 15 years prison.
The whole story was in Ray purgatory made by her sin. After her lover, teacher Chang was sentenced to death panalty, Ray committed suicide from school's roof. Then trapped in her purgatory for ever, again and again, until she can face her mistake.
This event happened in 1960，Wei was released around 1975, and martial law teminsted by 1987. The time Wei back to school should be around 2000-2010, he was a 60's old man at that time.
I know there's a movie but make a donghua or Anime and I'll cry some more lol
