  • In this week’s video, Paul attempts to describe in great detail exactly what he SEES as a blind person. With the help of some visual effects we will attempt to recreate Paul’s sight for you to experience.
There are many forms of Retinitis Pigmentosa, and everyone in the blind community experiences vision loss in their own way. This is by no means a representation of all people with Paul’s condition - although it’s likely many will relate.
On the extended video, Matthew shares Paul’s most recent medical records which show Paul’s degeneration of sight over a 2-year period. Watch here: / 83685338

So I'm mostly laughing at myself here, for some reason my brain just short circuited on the last word and I could NOT figure out what it was. Saying the letters out loud I was just "what is that? That isn't a word" but as soon as it's written down... yep, clearly a word. Thank you for writing it down and un-short-circuiting my brain.

My first professional job was working as an assistant to a CEO who was legally blind. Incredibly, neither the job description nor the interview process revealed that her sight was extremely limited, as she didn't like to talk about it. I was about three months in when I noticed my checks were all authorized by the American Disability Association. I had no idea. I thought she just got very tired and needed me to read her emails aloud every afternoon. Her receptionist finally explained and told me to give her options at restaurants so she didn't just order a generic chicken sandwich every single time because practically every restaurant has one. I found ways to be much more helpful after I understood why I was there. She was so lovely with me and I miss her.

My husband has nerve damage that has made him legally deaf. I think he's about as deaf as Paul is blind, if that makes sense. He's described it as trying to hear over loud TV static. The demonstrations are very helpful to let people know what they're going through, because I think normal-sighted/normal-hearing people have a hard time imagining it. I see how hard my husband tries to "pass" as hearing and it must be exhausting just getting through the day. Thanks for showing life as an interabled couple. More education is always a good thing!

Not trying to term you how to live, obviously.
But you could try learning ASL together. There's a whole huge deaf community out there that he might be able to find a lot of comfort in, people he doesn't have to try to pass around.
I'm just mentioning it coz not everyone knows things like that exist. And also, as someone who's beginning to harm ASL, I just think it's really cool and fun

Had an ear infection during vacation last year.
Couldn't really hear for two days due to the swelling before I got antibiotics, and it felt pretty similar to what you described.
I think those two days were more educational than most of school biology combined.
Really helped me understand the difference between good simulations and living that way, even if it only was until the doctor opened next Monday.
The simulation soundtracks I heard in school where as good as it gets, but not even close to the real thing.

Seeing so much content from these two is very surreal for me. I had an accident as a child and was (to what family/doctors have said) completely blind total darkness. I was going through therapy for a few months and then my vision came back 20/20. I always think about how different my life would've been had my sight not come back.
So I've always had total respect and am In awe with visually impaired people because it was almost me. Not to sound like it's something I escaped but its hard to think about "what could've been" when it seemed so short lived. I love this channel and always await more content. It makes me happy :)

I’ve felt so alone since going blind and it’s been so hard to describe what I can see when people ask. I’m glad I’m not alone in describing my vision as like an old box tv that is fuzzy that you would slap the side of to make clear except that I can’t slap my head and make it better lol. Since finding you guys a week or so ago I feel less alone and that there are people who understand what it’s like to be blind. Thank you Paul for being so open and thank you Matthew for being so understanding and helping share what it’s like for Paul but also what it’s like for you as his husband. I gave up on my hopes for a husband and a family when I went blind at 22 but now a little hope has been restored. Thank you for sharing! ❤

Oh the static is like when I get a sudden wave of lightheadedness! Just black and silver flecks floating around my vision as my head suddenly goes light.
I think my first understanding that blindness isn’t just complete darkness was actually watching the tv series Daredevil. The specific episode is when he describes what he sees as “a world on fire”, that’s when I realised that you can still sort of see when you’re blind, and that different people are at different levels.

I knew an old lady that refused to admit she was blind because she could still see a tiny bit on the left side of her left eye and she could see light. She refused anything if you said it could benefit her with her loss of eyesight. For example she only started listening to audio books when I started and told her how much I loved it. She loved them and couldn't have enough for 3 months then suddenly wouldn't have anything to do with them. Turns out someone make a remark to her about how helpful audio books are for blind people.

Thank you so much of this video! That's totally true, that people think blindness is kind of on/off situation. I have also RP, I still have a nice big "tunnel" left (about the size of a toilet paper roll hole). I have been using a white cane actively now for few yeqrs and still feel like a fraud sometimes. It helps me move so much better and with more confidence, but I do see other peoples confusion when I for example use my phone in public! Im trying not to let it afgect me. I just got a new, longer cane to use with heels, an I bought some sticker "diamonds" to make it bling😊 keep on the good work of educating people about the blind community!❤ Greetings from Finland!

I work as a librarian and had made by a friend who is optician simulation glasses showing how my vision is so that people can understand how I see. We propose during holidays to people to discover different aspects of the librarian work by participating to a few tasks ( choosing books, creating animations…) . And since I integrated this team I added the activity of working with me with simulation glasses on. .. Quite interesting experience either for me as there guide and for them apparently.

I appreciate your explaining blindness and its spectrum and showing us what Paul sees. Great education for the sighted community. Plus the humor and lighthearted way you explain? Is refreshing. Thanks so much.

I have nyctalopia, night blindness. And when the lights get too low for me, my eyes(brains?) start inventing all sorts of noise (static) which prevents me from seeing. In the dark areas between the static I can see shapes and if the floor and furniture have great contrast, I can kinda estimate where I am going, but having a floor colored cat might have been a mistake... Somehow my cats have learnt this, so every time I turn the lights off, they meow if I walk at them. Or it is more like a little 'kurrr' to let me know not to step on them. The hardest part of this is trying to explain it to my friends and family, who forget I have this cause on daytime I can see 20/20 but suddenly on low light, when THEM can see still perfectly, I use my hands to scout the way. They kinda half think I pretend... Hardest part for me emotionally is I have never seen stars with my own eyes, just in pictures.

That was amazing. So educational. How does Paul make aesthetic choices being blind? Is it a case of remembering you liked the look of certain things, decor, clothes colours etc?

You should consider buying black printer paper. If you’re using Word document or something similar, just remove the dark background from your text box before printing.

Question... Do you wear contact lenses? Because there is a video from September of this year where you do this thing about straws and your eyes are a totally different color and opacity.

These videos from this channel have given me the confidence to actually get out there and spread awareness.
I'd like to clarify a few things
    1) I am visually impaired not blind
    2) my left eye is significantly weaker than my right eye and has several issues with it. E.g a squint and a lazy eye.
    3) I can never get laser eye surgery my eyesight due to the risks as I'm about to explain
    4) I have myopia or short sightedness
I was told at the age of 17 (while asking if I could drive) that I can legally drive.
What really annoys me is that with my eyesight I am not "bad enough" to get support. And as I saw Paul's t-shirt that it's a spectrum I can agree. VI is also a spectrum. If you have anything less than average vision or have always had issues with sight you should actually receive help. But I've learnt that I'm not "bad enough " to get compensation or help for my studies. Instead my anxiety and ADHD are "bad enough " and this is something I have noticed in society as well. Especially when asking what menus say. It's like I need a cane to get help in public.
Ader watching this channel I realised that actually...I should go out and try to spread awareness.
So now, I do colour runs around my neighbourhood to support charities for the blind and visually impaired.
And in the future...I would like to actually get some form of game out there that is supportable for the blind or visually impaired (I am hoping to become a games designer)
    Edit:
    My right eye is
    9/6
    My left eye is
    36/6
As of last year. (2022) I haven't yet figured out my left eyes change of prescription (right hasn't changed) left changed a little bit but idk what it is now.

Thank you guys! My friend is legally blind, but gets told she’s not, simply because glasses kind of help her vision, but it’s continuing to get worse. She doesn’t mind the blindness, but she hates when she’s told she’s not by literal high school kids who have no clue what they’re talking about, because of movies.

I watch a RUclipsr called Luxaria. She watches and reacts to TV from decades ago. In one episode of America's Next Top Model, it explored a person with Retinitis Pigmentosa. That is a drop in the ocean for blind representation. Thank you both for giving more information about a different kind of blindness to what most media depicts.

I think it’s fascinating that static can come in many forms. I’ve never thought of static as being something some people see, I’ve only really only thought of it as something some people hear. I have Tinnitus as well as some missing auditory skills so I always hear the static but I never see it. I just find it kinda crazy that one word can mean different things to different people, although i guess that’s just how words work 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thank you for putting out these videos. Paul's journey and view of what blindness is is so foreign to the fear and anxiety my family experienced watching my grandfather agonizingly lose his sight to macular degeneration late in life, and now having to watch my uncles and father fight the same thing even earlier than he did. I'm only 34 but my ophthalmologist is worried I have signs I might be developing it as well, and with my fibromyalgia already making focusing and seeing in low light near impossible if I stress out enough to make my optic nerve fritz out I'd be lying if I wasn't scared of the hand I've been dealt. Seeing Paul (especially with Mr. Maple) in these videos gives me hope that there can still be hope, and that I won't just be a burden to my partner and family. Seeing Matthew in these videos also helps calm the negative thoughts in my head that try and give me a reminder that my husband will be there for me, no matter what the thoughts try to tell me (especially because he would likely pull the same stunts and honestly they are what got me watching these videos). I will forever be grateful for your videos, and will continue to watch as long as you still feel comfortable sharing your lives with us.

not even through the ads, but already hyped.
Good representations of (color) blindness are interesting af.
Especially since youtube is around and we can put it over videos, rather than showing it to kids in school on overhead projectors.
Through the ads by now, and having you two present it rather than a middle school biology teacher makes it even better

I have lattice degeneration in both of my eyes. It has been such a journey. I hate it. I still have to get laser treatment. It was suppose to stop and it started a lot earlier than most people. It's odd going to a specialist and everyone was in their 70s and up and i was in my 20s when i started going.

It's interesting to hear about reading---the reverse contrast, large font are the same tricks I use! I'm not blind, but I am rather farsighted and wear glasses to fix it, but reading can still be difficult, especially if I'm trying to wind down for the night or want to read laying down in bed. Granted, I'm sure my font size isn't quite as large.

I have begun using dark backgrounds with white texts when i use my computer, but can tolerate my phone having white background with black texts, but i also have my phone closer to my face lol. I do need to get glasses eventually though because ive noticed how even the white words on dark will blur lately and anything on a backlit screen causes me to be unable to read it, even with squinting. So at fast food shops, i have to have my oldest son double check the screen for me. If i have been emotionally upset, i cant see anything without squinting or it will be so blurry with streaks above and below the letters. I recently moved my furniture around and sit farther from the tv now. I cant read subtitles or my discord chat that has a dark background with white letters without squinting and since my laptop is hooked to my tv due to screen being broken, i had to enlarge all of the font on the laptop so its legible for me when i have really blurry vision. It comes and goes too. I could be really blurry for 1-3 days, then nearly perfect vision again for days, weeks or months. And my kids hate it and tease me lol. I just cant afford to get glasses, so i adapt things around me instead.

I suppose I do say I'm visually impaired, but do like the term partially sighted. I always find it hard to describe what my vision is like when people ask about it. I have had a condition since brith and had complications in my left eye which means I only see out of my right eye. In the left I do kind of see light, but it's like looking through a load of gel that has been put in my eye. The condition that I have also means that routine procedures like cataract surgery can be more risky and compplicated.
