What you said about how she was an intelligent dog, but not the right service dog for you, is so important. I had two service dogs before my Clifford, who is now retired. They were both VERY fast, and HIGH energy. Just not right for me with anxiety; Clifford actually forced me to slow down, be present, and enjoy the life around us. We were perfect matches, and still are, just now he is older and it was time for him to spend more time at home and enjoy his retirement :). I do miss him a lot at times when I'm out.

Yep! Totally get where you're coming from! My first assistance dog was a "fail" too. Gorgeous boy, but couldn't handle the crowds and nearly being stepped on by an 'unaware' public. I'm currently training assistance dog #2. I don't think the majority of people realise the work (and tears) that go into forging a successful 'team' that can function in a world that's still largely unaware of the challenges some of us face....but things are changing slowly. Also, that anxiety is an underlying emotion that goes with disability for many.

This is the "heads" side of the social media coin. They can be used for horrible things, like organizing the Jan. 6, 2020 lunacy, but can also be used to educate millions (1.28 just for these guys alone, in fact). Previously, you'd only learn anything if you happened to become acquainted with a blind person. Word of mouth is slow. Electrons are very, _very_ fast.

Having watched Molly Burke's experience with the Mira foundation where they do not prematch dogs, I do think it is a better system for the team/bonding (I understand prematching saves wasted journeys if someone can't find the right dog that time). My friend got a dog from Guide Dogs UK. His first dog was like a poster child, when he retured he got a second dog who is very similar to how you described the female; walks very fast and is easily distracted.
Also, sounds like she was maybe not ready to work just yet and needed a little more training/time to mature.

I had a blind friend who lived up the street from me, she was blinded because of an accident when she was very young, Dot never had a guide dog, they might have tried, but I'm not sure. I know Dot attended a school for the blind for a few years but lived with her Mother for most of her life. I would sometimes take Dot to appointments and to the store, lovely lady. But Dot had a giant cat named Attila, and he would walk behind her, it was really cute, Dot did quite well when she walked to my house for a visit and Attila was always with her! I'm so glad Paul and Maple found each other, and Matthew you are a wonderful support system for Paul.

@@MatthewandPaulOfficialoh wow, I didn't know it took that long to get him matched with Maple. Good things come to those who wait. From one Canadian to another, I do love the fact that he got a pup named Maple and in the Short I saw that they even mentioned it. Maple is such a kind soul. I can't go into much detail for legal purposes, but I worked with guide dogs for years and they really do have varied temperaments and energy levels (like any dog) despite them all needing to be able to ultimately do their job and not get distracted by other dogs and people around them. I have a beautiful Golden/Yellow Lab Service Dog. I remember the two weeks of training and how rigorous it was. We were matched during the training. You absolutely know when the dog at your side is not the match for you. A perfect dog for another but not a fit personally. My dog ended up being this HUGE male named Rigs. He is a gift from heaven. As you know the fuzzy partner you match with is so in tune with you that you can read each others minds. I love watching Maple interact with you guys. He has the same bright sunshine-y personality. You can see how perfectly he leads Paul through the streets with the utmost confidence. A fantastic team for sure. Thank you for sharing!!

I live more rural than them and go hiking a lot as someone going blind slowly there is so much to adjust to. I have to get shoes that bend better. An automatic situation doesn't seem to work for anyone.

    • @khanhhm5762
      @khanhhm5762 Год назад +6

In response to your comment about blind people being able to just order a guide dog, no, that is not at all possible because dogs are living beings, and so when you are putting a human and a dog together, you are matching two living beings. They must learn to communicate with each other and work together. (Also just so you are aware, the term seeing eye is correctly written as Seeing Eye, which is a school in Morristown New Jersey, and only dogs bred and trained there can be properly called Seeing Eye dogs. This is important for donation purposes, so I am not trying to be overly picky. All of the guide dog schools in the United States are independent of one another and they respect their names.)
The most critical part of a guide dog instructor's job is making the correct match. A dog that can bring one person freedom may be a complete disaster and nightmare for someone else. Example: my current guy dog is a 27 inch tall male German Shepherd. He walks incredibly fast, at around 4 mph. He also has a really hard pole, his signals are abrupt, and he requires a handler who has experience. He gets bored easily if not given enough challenges, and his favorite places to work are in crowded areas and huge cities where he hast to constantly make decisions.
If he had been matched with someone who is less active, lives in a very quiet environment and is not able to give him enough challenge on a regular basis, it would be a disaster for both human and dog. The human would be dragged everywhere, and the dog would find ways to get into all kinds of inappropriate work that the human would not agree with.
      So matching is incredibly important.

I knew about Guide dog training because I have seen documentaries on it, and I had a friend that was blind. The handler and dog have to go through a lot of training and bonding time before they can graduate from whatever program they are working with.

I'm sorry your first dog didn't work out, but very glad that you and Maple are a good match!
Even as a puppy raiser, learning the names of the pups is so fun! A lot of people think that raisers get to name their puppies, but we don't, for a couple reasons. First, GDB doesn't want the dogs to have super common names (like Buddy), so when they're working, they don't hear someone saying their name and get confused. Another reason is that GDB follows all their dogs their whole lives, even career-changed dogs (who don't make it through the program), so they don't want multiple dogs with the same name. Finally, each litter of puppies is given a letter and all the pups from that litter have a name that starts with that letter. When we get dogs, we only know the letter their name starts with beforehand, so it's always very special to learn their name as you meet them! Mr. Maple has a great name and his siblings all have M names too!

This process is very similar to Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). A 2 wk training, on campus, with staff, working all day, staff stay overnight for help and observation of the team. Many people don't understand, you can have an amazing dog, with so much training, but ones they're "on-the-job", in real life, the dog just isn't able to carry out their duties, for many different reasons. My son's dog was rejected from her first placement, went back for another year of training, and ended up being the perfect dog for my son. She wasn't the best dog for many people, but she was the best for our situation. She was lower energy, very patient and calming. If you were a person with a full time job, going all day long, athletic, she wouldn't have worked for that person. However, she was strong when we needed her to be. The staff really do know so much about putting together a winning team, they're looking for long term success. Maple is so perfect for Paul, and Paul is perfect for Maple. She loves her job and is committed to Paul.

Aren't they adorable. It really is refreshing to see a happy couple. I'm getting old; I'm starting to forget what it felt like to be young and in love. Gawd that was the best feeling! There are plenty of great things about love in later years. But young love is just so special. Throwing your hand in with another person, taking that chance, is among the most exciting, romantic, and courageous things we ever do as human beings. But reality tv has changed the landscape of love. We no longer see snippets of happy young couples at the beginnings of long journeys the way we used to. Today, over and over again, we witness machinery leave the station, on its way to a train wreck. Watching these two is a wonderful reminder that young ppl are still finding real love. Nothing has changed; the world is still full of young ppl ready to take that plunge. That is a great comfort to me. The family unit helps to give stability and structure to our communities. But love is how we create lasting and worthwhile structures. This couple, and the life they are building, is a solid foundation on which society can build. They are solid. We can rest futures on them.

To matt and paul I just quickly have a hilarious story to tell you that happened to me when I was with a blind friend in which I hope, gives use a laugh and makes pauls embarrassing moments a little better but in 2004 I was invited to one of my friends birthdays who was blind and him and his sister owned a scooter. The ones with the metal piece in between two foam handles and as I used to ride them a lot without a helmet. I felt pretty confident on the one I was on at his birthday and sadly enough. I was absolutely incorrect as I face planted into his driveway, hitting my nose on the middle bit of the scooter and his driveway and broke my nose to the side and My nose was pouring out blood and I blacked out completely and as he was clearly blind everyone was worried about me asking if I’m okay and poor, Sam was standing there on the driveway, asking everyone what happened I not only felt embarrassed for myself but also for the birthday boy because I don’t think anyone told him till after I left looking back on it now these days I can absolutely lose it laughing, and if someone ever says, have you broken a bone before I’m always laughing about saying that. Yeah I broke my nose at a blind boys party 😂😂😂😂 so don’t worry. Paul are sighted people have embarrassing moments in front of people who are blind, also ❤
And side note I really love hearing the stories and that but it’s sad that the rest of the story is put on Patreon because not, a lot of people can afford that type of stuff, especially on disability payments like myself

I have the most difficult time of not gregariously greeting canines, to the point i avoid greeting at all. I am a blind person avoider, even if i know & just love the person. Have you had a chance to experience or discuss tips for ppl like me? (I'm the opposite of the Karen).
What a relief to hear Mr. Maple is still working out wonderfully.
Sharing your story of the disappointment you experienced in your 1st trial dog, was really helpful. It's good to hear she found her perfect match later.

I like to think, even though these animals did not work out staying in our home. They still gave love and some valuable lessons to us. I know they found their forever homes and it's ok it wasn't mine. That is just a difference in lives and not the fault of one or the other.

You're a kind soul Paul. Even soul-searvhing that you could have made a mistake of giving up your 1st guide dog. But what you decide on was correct, it's difficult to be always stressed out when stepping out of your place, stressed due to her fast pace tugging at your arm (could even result to injury), and easily gets distracted, you were anxious if she would make No. 2 because she spread out her doing it. Ok not to proceed with her, because your guide dog is supposed to give you convenience, assistance, and not to be stressed.

I am so sorry that this happened with your very first gmatch. Dog switches or matches not working out in class does happen, and I won't write a huge novel about the multitude of factors and why this can happen.
It is not uncommon for most people to bond very quickly to their dogs, and then it becomes incredibly devastating when the match does not work out.
When I went and got my second dog from Seeing Eye in 2002, I was originally matched with a gorgeous female black lab who was completely different from my first dog. I loved her immediately because she was aloof, completely uninterested in me, and had a very different energy from my first dog, also a female black lab.
Unfortunately Candie did not have the super fast pace that I needed in a guide, so they had to do a switch after five days. I have been very fortunate in that I have never had to leave the school without a dog, but I know others who have gone through it, and it is really hard.
Matching dog and handler is an art with an element of luck, too. This is something that many people do not understand.
I hope all the dogs that you got to try out went to handlers and have successful careers now. I always tell people that what may bring one person freedom and is the perfect match may be a complete disaster and nightmare for someone else.
Although I'm sure the experience was devastating, it would've been much harder had you gone home with her, bonded even more, and something unsafe happened in your home environment. I've seen that happen, too.
I am glad that Maple is a much more suitable match for you. There is nothing like having that first guide dog, the one who works with you for years and witnesses all of your life experiences with you.
