    Quinn - A hearty congratulations on your channel's first three years. I have seen considerable growth in your presenting style, and your production values (and your number of followers, too). I'm totally amazed that you can keep a (presumably) full-time job, and still crank out a well-produced and comprehensive video every week - without fail. You must be one of those people who only needs a few hours sleep every night! Looking forward to the NEXT three years!

    On the subject of failure… Some tidbits most everyone knows, but worth repeating.
    Failure is a big aspect of the learning process. If you give up when you fail, you most likely are giving up on your education.
    On the other hand, my kids piano teacher use to say, “Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.”
    Planning helps prevent failure. There’s never enough time to do something right the first time, but always time to do it over. Take the time to do it right the first time.
    Love your channel, Quinn.

    3:1 production:working ratio sounds about right. I can tell you put a lot of time and thought into setting up shots, audio, editing, etc. People don't realize how much time goes into making a simple 20 minute video

    • @UncleKennysPlace
      @UncleKennysPlace 2 года назад +2

      3:1 is gold. I think I'm more like 10:1. But I'm too picky, and usually late with projects.

    • @kyelight
      @kyelight 2 года назад +2

      A common ratio for youtube is 60:1 - ie, one hour editing for every minute of final video. Casey Neistat mentioned this as a ratio for his daily vlogs, and I've heard lots of other people mention similar ratios too. Achieving 3:1, especially including setting up shots, is truly excellent and means that your processes are well optimised!

    • @wouterbaake7386
      @wouterbaake7386 2 года назад +3

      @@kyelight that's not exactly what she was saying. The 3:1 ratio was video time (Setup+edit) vs shop time. No mention of production time vs video length.
      I would imagine that this also heavily depends on your editing style. Quinn's videos are low paced, so that should make it slightly easier to make longer videos with less production time. Not that I'm criticizing the pace though. It suits the content.

    I'm late to this party, spent several nights when I couldn't get to sleep watching the steam engine builds, the boiler build, now I'm watching this. Unironically, you are a wise person. There's so many things you say that just.... "oh fiddlesticks, I know this, but I don't know this, why?" make sense. Thanks, by the way, for settling my mind when it refuses. Not saying you put me to sleep, not at all, but it's somehow calming and interesting at the same time, the stuff you do.

    Thank you for these three years of your life shared with us! I am new to your channel and was confused on the beginning, I confess. You have such a kind and direct approach towards the hobbyist, something others don’t! You bring several good points in this Q&A (even though it’s a year old!) about how we should proceed and what to expect from all facets this hobby can bring. Your point in management and interrelationship with others by our mistakes and weaknesses show through its a very touchy subject that no one wants to talk about! It is the key to develop a better management set and environmentally bring your peers closer to grow together and respect you, as a manager, as a human too! You always promote others channels and point us to watch their videos anytime you don’t know as much or lack experience on something they are “better”, and I don’t see them pointing anyone back to you or maybe didn’t watch the right channels! You have a huge heart and is a very caring person, qualities hard to find in a very long time! One question for your future Q&A’s that I’d ask is why you stopped being redhead?
    Congrats on your success and example you set for all of us!!!

    My dad sent me this video after I had a mental breakdown about breaking so many things as a repair technician for phones and tablets, and I wanted to thank you. You probably won’t see this because it’s an older video but I still wanted to put out my gratitude. My biggest trigger that I face is feeling like a failure. I go into a device with so much excitement to fix it but when an accidental break happens it can get hard to push through as a perfectionist. I try my best not to let it get to me because that’s just a part of the process of becoming an advanced technician which is my aspiration. So I often go back into the device I accidentally broke a part on to see if I can fix the issue but when it’s not fixable and we have to order a new part for the customer I get a bit discouraged. The section where you talked about overcoming failure and keeping your focus on your end goal and using that failure as a learning experience was something I really needed to hear. (I also liked your analogy with the tiger). I’m gonna keep looking through your channel because just in this one video you have inspired me, so thank you again.

    • @joelee2371
      @joelee2371 Год назад

      I repair electronics too, and it's frustrating enough just trying to work on the small stuff at all, let alone achieving perfection; the customer can't see what you've done inside the unit, it just has to work. So, don't let the perfect get in the way of the good.

    Quinn, you have taught me so much and for small machines, no one has taught me more over the years, so thank you for makign the content you do and taking the time to teach us all. I always learn a few things per video, and always look forward to the next one. Your content is great, and the production (and amazing jokes (keep the joke guy on the payroll!)) value is up there and love seeing the next thing you come out with. Thanks so much, and heres to the next 3 years!!!

    What a delightful video. If only more people were like you. When you spoke about being motivated to go into the shop
    when you were not full of energy that day, it made me think of what gets me into my shop (I'm a gunsmith) and it always
    seems that if a friend is passing by or I'm teaching someone how to do something, suddenly the energy appears and it comes down to one thing. I love to share my knowledge and be able to make someone relax and learn.
    It is SO important, as you say, to let yourself be human, laugh at your mistakes, learn from them and, most of all, have fun.
    You knocked it out of the park with this one! All the Best!

    Happy Anniversary!!! What you show is interesting. Geared more to the hobbyist, while I am a full timer about as long as you have been alive, but interesting. I like the way you explain to the new guys, the hobbyists. I wish you had been around while I was the new guy. Yes, your machines are different, so what? Even as a pro, I learned long ago, we do the work we can with the tools and equipment we have.. You do that well!
    Photography was taught to me by my Dad. He learned as a teen, and it worked out well for him when he got drafted- Navy photog. Later he was a civilian shooting weddings then made a career of the science of printing pictures into printed labels, magazines etc. He built a darkroom in our house, when I got interested, he taught me how to develop and print.
    My idea of light reading has also been the Handbook.

    You are one in a million Quinn. The projects and the way you approach them is just so darn interesting. I especially like the mistakes and the way you handle them. I have found over the years when things go wrong first step is not to panic. Most times there is a way to bail them out and continue on. The project is only a failure when you give up on it. All the best to you and please keep doing what you do. Here's to another 3 years.

    Quinn - As for bringing more people into the hobby you have succeeded. I have done woodworking for years and my career is in semiconductor design. As such, I have a fully equipped shop full of screaming banshees (as you call them) and complete electronics lab. But after watching your channel starting a few months ago, I have decided to acquire a PM Lathe and Mill. As you mentioned, There are lots of older books out there that may "teach" the basics of machining, but they lack the learning experiences, and certainly the passion and enthusiasm that your videos bring to the party. Thank you for spending the time and having the passion to share your journey (successes as well as fails) with us.

    I have to say that I really appreciate the work you're doing. Like you said, there's not much information about hobbyist machining out there. Its even better that you share your mistakes and make others understand that its okay, as long as you learn from it. If it weren't for all the work and videos that you're doing, I would have never know where to start in machining and never even tried to get into the hobby. I love the humor as well! Thank you so much Quinn!
