Nice Review! I'm thinking about replacing the Maxxis Assegai / DHRII 3C DoubleDown on my 160mm Enduro Bike with something a bit lighter and the Barons look really interesting. Unfortunately Schwalbe has become 'super' heavy too with their new Super Trail tyres.
This is gonna be much less aggressive compared with the Assegai, but they are also gonna be fast as hell. Give your self time to get used to the new tread pattern before doing any serious enduro runs. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Ha I had no clue tires were such a controversial topic. They look very grippy! Love the close up of the tire with the black background; well done! Great review, Sage!
These remind me of the knobby tires on my Huffy BMX bike from the 1970s! Doesn't matter that I'm not going to buy these, I just enjoy the details in your videos. Always well done!
A great video Sage, a super and qualitative review. You described the tyre very well and explained the advantages nicely, great with the videos. It's always fun to watch your great content. Keep up the good work and have fun with the tyre. Ride on buddy
@@TrailSage At the moment I prefer the Maxxis Assegai on the front wheel and the Maxxis Agressor on the rear wheel. When it's muddy, I have the Maxxis Shorty on the front wheel. I used to have Schwalbe but I like the Maxxis better. I have never tried a Continental. But your video invites you to try it. Keep up the good work Sage
Great review! I’ve been looking for something outside of the Maxxis I’ve been riding these past few years. These are now on my radar. Thanks for the vid!!
Continental has great quality in all commodities. I was supplier to them in previous job. They audited me often. They make so many parts of our cars so I would definitely trust them on bikes.
Loved Der Baron especially in wet weather. From the looks of your trails though (similar to NC), I bet Der Kaiser would be better. Ran Der Baron front / Der Kaiser rear as winter tires, they worked great. Summer moved Der Kasier to front and installed Trail King rear, they worked great. Der Kaiser was great in the dust, Der Baron was great in wet. Both worked very well at the bike parks and in good dirt. I found your video while looking for info on the new Rubans. Nice video!
Good stuff Jared. I like the different combos you run. I have thought about running the Der Kaisers, but this bike has to work for all my riding. The added weight would be annoying to lug around on my longer weekend rides. If I had a downhill/enduro specific bike I think I would def try that combo. Thank you so much for watching and the feedback brotha!
@@TrailSage for sure you need the bike to work for you. My notes were that my Der Baron was 899 grams, Der Kaiser was 972 grams, Trail King was 881 grams, all in 27.5x2.4 protection apex. I found the protection apex casings were much stiffer than my Kenda ATC and Maxxis Exo and Schwalbe Snakeskin casings but the Contis were the same or lower weights. Der Kaiser definitely rolled slower than Trail King but I never had Der Baron on the rear, so can't say one way or the other. I don't run inserts, never had a pinch flat on the protection apex, sidewalls held a berm well. Snakeskin and Exo casings have not fared so well, ATC has taken some abuse with no flats. Got about 1300 miles on the Contis before swapping to new tires and sent them to spare tire duty. Sorry, I love talking about tires. LOL :) Thanks!
@@jaredrude431 lol I am passionate about tires as well. I was hesitant to put out this video because I thought the backlash would be crazy. Thank you again for the feedback and notes.
Yeah, they can be tricky mounting them sometimes but once they are on those stiffer sidewalls payoff. Thanks for the comment and for watching the video Patrick.
@@stevepodraza6363 I like it. I've been running Baron F/R in the muddy weather and Trail King rear the rest of the year. I'm running Specialized Hillbilly on my other bike and I've found that the Conti Black Chili is stickier on rocks which I like.
In my new Privateer 161 build I put the Baron Projekt in front and the Kaiser Projekt in the back. Havent been to the most serious trails yet but they seem like a very good tire. Also have the non black chili Trail Kings on my hardtail, also a very good tire for the money.
Interesting, so you are running the less burlier tire in front, I had never heard of that technique. Let me know how that holds up. Thanks for watching and commenting JP.

I have been running a Maxxis Minion DHF for a while now and have been looking to try out other brands. Continental has really been catching my eye. I am conflicted between the Der Baron and the Der Kaiser though. I want something that's aggressive. I am not sure if the Der Kaiser is overkill or how it compares to the Der Baron.
Hey Mike. If you like the Minion DHF the Der Kaiser maybe a better fit. You can also try a hybrid approach and run a Der Kaiser in the front and Der Baron in the back. Not knowing what terrain you ride on makes it hard to give you some more definitive advice, but I hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching.
That would be a worthwhile investment indeed, looking at that result after six months of your use. You had that very good review for this tire. I don’t bike so I can’t tell if that fifty five dollars is reasonable.
So what is on the front and what on the rear? I would like to buy them as a present and I am not sure... I was about to buy the continental trail king for back and mountain king for the front. Same style riding as you and also desert terrain. I was also looking at the keiser and baron. Please H E L P 🙃
I ride the Der Baron on both my front and rear. If you are going to buy the Trail King and Mountain King, put the Mountain King on the back and Trail up front. As for the Der Kaiser, I have not ridden with one so I can not give you my opinion on it.

Looking for some new tires for my hardtail. I'm sold on a Der Baron for the front, but what's your experience with Der Baron vs Trail King on the rear? Does the TK roll much faster?
Hey Matt, that would depend on your terrain. If you are riding hard packed dirt, then yes, the TK would roll faster. If you are riding in loamy or techy gnar then the DB will be prob be better. Hope that helps.

We ride pretty similar terrain and I think you would be a perfect match for these tires Forrest. I found the Maxxis to be a great tire, but I would wear through the compound too quickly.
