There is a reason why there is "industry standard" in almost all major technological improvements. When HDR gets an industry standard is when it will begin to shine. The fact that different brands have different modifications means different movie directors will try to maintain a balance to cover all rather than maximize their capabilities.

    • @MrHallonz
      @MrHallonz 5 месяцев назад

I would like to agree with you but I am still sceptical of this statement, because even if there is an industry standard you can never quite shield yourself from ”artistic intent” or when the people doing the transfer decide on how to grade the film. This is a problem with SDR also, since no one can agree on what ”proper” gamma is for SDR as an example.

Back when I got a High End 4k HDR TV, I consumed nothing but HDR contend when it came to games and movies. When I watched one of your previous "HDR IS A SCAM" video, I force myself to watch n play those HDR content in SDR and immediately notice how games in SDR were more vibrant and rich in colors. I have not switch back to HDR ever since.

@@s9209122222 Yeah. For me HDR is purely to give you a more realistic view of the real world’s colors. SDR makes things more deeper in color. HDR, especially in marvel’s Spider-Man really enhances the suit colors to be more COLOR ACCURATE. It’s not supposed to have color and saturation to the brim.

Finally someone said it out loud! HDR, HDR+10 and DOLBY VISION look all way worst than SDR. The way they marketing all this new 4K era of image is ridiculous! Yep, HDR can look great on super bright scenes but in darker ones looks like crap and totally washed out. So, forget watching your favourite horror films on HDR or Dolby Vision and enjoy them as you did on SDR.

I don't think HDR is a scam. I was, too, disappointed by washed-out colors in games until I realized how important calibration is.
    1) Using Windows HDR Calibration tool, I could opt in for more vibrant colors.
    2) Many games provide HDR calibration settings.
In my experience, washed-out colors indicate low peak brightness. For example, in AC Odyssey I had to bump it to 800 cd/m2 on my DisplayHDR 400 screen to make the game look great. Also, once I configured Horizon Forbidden West by bumping highlights and shadows, the game looks truly amazing.
True, not every game has good HDR implementation and not every game looks good on HDR. However, when it works, it works really well. The fact that it's not plug & play all the time may turn off some people from using this technology, but every technology has trade-offs. You can't have it all. Also, I think that the issue with HDR comes from the nature of the technology and the variety of screens out there.
For years I have been playing the games in SDR just because I like more vibrant colors and didn't bother to do calibrations. Now, I try to adjust the game settings and then see for myself whether HDR is better. Recently, every game I have configured looks much, much better on HDR, with bright objects brighter, dark areas darker and super vibrant colors. Bright objects really stand out compared to SDR.
I Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a game that requires no manual settings to show amazing HDR can be.

I bought a 4k projector just for 3D movies. It says it supports HDR. When I actually researched into it, it turns out HDR is only the "best" experience when watching HDR content on an OLED TV with high NITS. Apparently most OLEDs cannot reach that kind of brightness. Projectors in movie theatres do not use HDR. TV for years didn't use HDR. So I finally gave up on it when I watched Shutter Island in 4k and when it finished I thought it was funny that the whole movie seemed kinda sepia tone. I popped in the Bluray disc and you can see the color of Leo's eyes and the color of the grass and the sky. Turns out even my 4k Projector can only "emulate" HDR. So I turned it off. I avoid HDR releases. Watching Mulholland Drive in a remastered 4k presentation from Criterion was more impactful. A 4k resolution is more important than the artificial post processing of HDR when it comes to watching films shot on 35mm/70mm. Even 16mm (El Mariachi) Blu-Ray looks amazing while upscaled on a quality 4k player (don't use video game consoles).
Its insulting when people say 3D movies are a gimmick when they provide actual three dimensional depth into a movie (when done well) but HDR is something I'm supposed to care about. Also the thing from last year's video. People just do not calibrate their screens. Nobody even cares to pop in a THX DVD and try to calibrate the screen just a bit. Every TV in every person's living room I've been in is always set to some kind of dynamic mode churning out all the post processing effects that the TV can do.

Also the effect didn't work if you hand one eye that was weaker than the other, which is a large amount of people, it's also what made people feel nauseous . Another issue with 3D is that while directors like James Cameron made genuine attempts at 3D with films designed for the technology. Most studio just applied a filter to a previous existing 2D film.

HDR content NEEDS tonemapping for everything and pretty much NOTHING has tonemapping so its all a guessing game. Nvidias new HDR "emulator" or w.e it is though is changing that. It actually makes thing look good and makes HDR worth it on PC. Hopefully that kicks the rest of the industry in the butt and they get a standard going.

I came here to see is someone else would say HDR is a scam. Reason why is because I was playing Forza Horizon 5 on my Hisense R6 Series, 4K HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. I turned it off so I could screen share to my phone so I could get an accurate look at the color I was seeing when I looked it up on an OLED screen since screen sharing with it in made my phone screen darker and washed out. I got the color right. but also on my LED tv, the blacks are deeper, whites are brighter, colors like red for example is more vivid in SDR.
This is coming from someone who used Dolby Vision since I got the tv in 2022.

I don‘t get it. Aren‘t there way more good examples of hdr out by now?
Since you mentioned that 9 out of 10 times sdr is better, an example of when hdr is better would have been helpful to really understand the problem.
The way I see it, it‘s all about how it was calibrated/mastered. I agree, the lack of a standard sucks but to my eye, Furiosa looked awesome in dolby vision (in cinemas) compared to the sdr screening. Or is this a different topic? I‘m confused, since I quite enjoyed the presentations I watched in hdr (both at home and in the theatre). I thought the broader color space was noticeable, especially banding seemed completely gone in the examples I have seen.

That's the problem. Either the set isn't correctly calibrated and/or the implementation is poor. It's not just a lot of Films, it's video games as well. A lot of TV's were being sold as FakeHDR. Like Samsung selling at Bestbuy as HDR with a little more than 200 nits. Scam indeed.

(in games) HDR is simply not a standard everyone just plays with brightness and contrast etc… and trying to push this stupid technology that simply isn't what it promises to be. I also have a 65-inch c3 by LG Oled and we have exactly the same story there with the consoles… it is a gimmick. If you wanna punchy a picture use SDR and reduce in-game brightness to the point just before you start losing details in the dark and I promise you ain't even gonna bother to check the HDR implementation. A night is supposed to look like night and day is supposed to look like day and SDR can deliver just that. Only you need to play a tiny bit with your brightness and contrast levels and you're set! Unlike HDR where one scene will look awesome the next be washed out and the third be too bright or too dark…

HDR is the aftermarket LED headlights of the TV world. Good for searing your retina, not much else.

I have a non hdr 4k tv.... It's looks great. I've seen hdr sets at friends houses.... When set up correctly and showing a 4k disc that showcases hdr... The results can be impressive... But its not the be all and end all

Nothing I watch in Dolby Vision looks the way you describe and show here. NOTHING. As a matter of fact, putting in a 4K Blu-ray movie and turning off the HDR on the player the image looks disgusting. Skin tones look unnatural and the colors have this horrible overly saturated unnatural look. Putting it back in Dolby Vision and the colors are natural the image is bright the highlights pop and there is more detail in the darker scenes. This is with Ford V Ferrari on 4K Blu-ray.
I’ll admit sometimes the HDR is broken. There needs to be more standards but every source and content is going to look different. Ever hear of film makers intent? Not everything needs to be saturated and exploding with color and detail like the advertising would suggest. Overall HDR is better than SDR. BUT, HDR is going to look it’s best in a dark room. SDR prioritizes APL brightness and HDR prioritizes highlight brightness.

I don't get how you could spend this much time in the industry and still not understand why people are drinking the HDR kool-aid. I'd call it a matter of preference, but the way you talk about HDR is so obviously based on misconceptions about it that I'm astonished no one has just showed you a properly calibrated HDR display. If you see what the extra range is actually adding to the image, then it won't be a mystery anymore.

I recently found Beekeeper rips in HDR and SDR, not that I'm a fan of it, it's just a recent movie presented in both formats, and they look exactly the same on my HDR TV. But I see difference if I watch them on non-HDR TV (HDR version becomes dim).
I think modern TVs using auto tone mapping or something like this which make SDR pop. Or Beekeeper has bad HDR implemented.
