Today’s Cybersecurity Lesson: Cover your Cam
People around the world are catching on to this idea: you should put a cover on your webcam when you’re not using it.
We’ve all gotten pretty comfortable using our webcams to have virtual meetings with our friends, family, & coworkers. But when we hang up, could someone uninvited take a peek?
Hackers can gain access to your computer’s camera in a variety of sneaky ways. They can exploit vulnerabilities in operating systems, applications, or firmware. These kinds of security flaws can allow bad guys to take control of your webcam remotely.
You might have even GIVEN them access to your webcam, because you granted permissions to an application you installed.
Or maybe you clicked on a link in a phishing email, and you wound up downloading malware like Remote Access Trojans that lets them activate your webcam without your knowledge. RATS!
And it’s not just cybercriminals who want to spy on you. Governments, corporations, and even schools have been found to secretly access the camera on people's devices.
No matter what kind of spyware they’re using, or who THEY are-there’s an easy fix. Unplug your external camera when you’re not using it, or if it’s built in, stick a piece of tape over it. You can even buy a cute little slider. Just close the door in their faces. Not today, sneaky peepers.

We really gotta stop using the hoodie guy in a dark room to represent hackers.
Lucky for us they all have a fear of bright lights and wear a uniform, makes them easier to catch
Don't call me out like that @socratica ! Everyone will know!
It's actually a good point. The guy in hoody isn't who people should be wary of. Social manipulation is the easiest form of hacking to fall for. Nobody thinks of themselves as "hackable", but everyone is.
My old Lenovo laptop has a sliding door for the camera lens, my new Dell and Mac Air does not sliding door for the camera.
The Lenovo is packed with little goodies like that. Come on Dell and Apple, get with the program.
Hey audio on the headphones is only on the left side. just the voice.
the fact is
microsoft, google, android, ios are always listening to any possible mic for their ads audience
Thanks for this. I have a question tho. Can a webcam be accessed while the indicator is not showing it?
Yes. It's possible.
Yes, the LEDs on the camera can be controlled through software.
i don’t know why they use two different logic signals to run the camera. one signal for the camera and another logic signal for the LED. That is just stupid.
I haven’t looked at the schematic but the comments above seem to be true.
As far as I know, it is controlled by hardware. If cam is open, led is turned on. There is no way to control it via software. Actually, that’s the whole point of the led.
Alec at Technology Connections had a great video on this once. Yes: the light and the camera don't have to be in sync.
Unfirtunately, there's not really an equivalent action for the microphone.
What about the microphones, and the mobile camera?
I think we'll need to do a separate microlesson on all the "listening in" devices.
Ive been doing this for over 10+ years, yet people called me crazy for it... Now it's a common idea..... haha
If a hacker gets access to my webcam and see's me naked
They have my deepest sympathy
Hackers not using nmap on screen, -2 points 😉
now tell me how to protect my private chats...
How about the mike in the phone 😂?
Sound is not working correctly
I really need an effective easy to disable the microphone!
The only foolproof method we know is the faraday cage envelope (quick mini lesson coming soon on those).
Especially when you are watching p..n
Why those peeping toms!
Very bad advise. It's mostly Android smartphones that don't receive security patches after a year or two. Computers are usually up to date.
Once an attacker is in your device, your selfie camera is the least of your problems.
Can't believe this is coming from Socratica. 😢
