Great review I like Dalmore 12 (as well as other Dalmores but I always seem to have the 12 and a back up on bar. Love the Glendronach 12 & 18 but wow have the prices skyrocketed for 18s here and forget about the prices of the 21s. Been getting into Glenallachie lately since I can finally get that.
Hi Jason, Tamnavulan is the other distillery. AnConc 18 for me, €89 near me, for an 18 year old these days that’s a decent price. Thought that Glen deveron comes from the Macduff distillery. Yes most 18 + malts are now out of my reach.😞🤷♂️. Slàinte Jason 🥃
Speyburn 18 is the best value for money. Quality wise, it can easily keep up with the Macallan 18 double oak for less than a third of the retail price!
Tamnavulin is the other brand Whyte & MacKay own. IMHO, the Dalmore 12 Sherry Cask Select tastes better and costs $65 here in SoCal vs $320 for the 18..!!! Glendronach 18 - $220, Bunnahabhain 18 - $399. CRAZYYYYY..!!!!!
Yep, Dalmore prices are even beyond ridiculous these days. As for recommendable 18 yo malt I'd say Speyburn. In Bulgaria I can buy a bottle for roughly 79 euros. Loch Lomond 18 and Glen Moray 18 can be had for about 10 euros less, but I'd take Speyburn first. It may not be the best 18 yo on the market, but considering that almost everything with 18 on the label costs way more than 100 euros already, I'd say Speyburn is a decent value. Cheers!
Bought it for 70€ here in Germany 5 years ago. Compared to Dalmore 12 and 15 I liked the 18 more... Still I have the same issue like you: for me at least all standard Dalmores have this artificial note that I can't stand. But lucky for me the insane current price for Dalmore 18 does not bother me at all, as I will not buying it again, even if it was 70€ again...
The best 18 year old whiskey is Sazerac 18 - I know it isn’t a scotch. Next is Springbank 18 but that is impossible to find anywhere. I hear Old Pulteny 18 is very good. Glenmorangie 18 can be nice if you like the honey taste - it is a bit like Balvenie Doublewood.
I recommend the Ancnoc 18 quite often but then I stocked up when it was €79. Tomatin 18 is also up there for an integrity budget 18 with sherry influence.
A whisky can still be great even if they don’t deserve the retail price :) You consider the price/ performance too much in your videos. But it is still fun to watch your comments! Thank you! :)
I haven't seen it, but I think you (or was it another whisky reviewer?) mentioned that Horst once looked into the actual cost of time whisky spent in a barrel, and found that it didn't contribute very much to the overall production cost of a whisky--most of the costs are at the beginning, with just a few extra pounds/dollars/euros each year. Or then there's big costs at the end like alcohol taxes, sales taxes, etc. So the premium in pricing for added age was never really cost-based, but has been pushed much more so in the last 2-3 years. Functionalist economists may argue it's a cost that "the market" will bear, but that's what is said re. every bubble from tulips onward, i.e. capitalism is cyclical, and the longer-term costs of the downs are typically glossed/ignored/not fully counted. In doing so such ideologues are fetishising/mystifying "the market", which is composed of actual people. Age (in luxury products) is probably an ideal thing to "premiumise" because it lends itself so readily to such fetishisation/mystification. The "taste" of (added) age is comparatively elusive/a mystique, so in one sense can become whatever producers decide to ask, at least temporarily (temporally?). The cost of 18s is beyond me, but then compare how much it jumps again for just three more years to 21. Age (in several senses) is laughable (in several...). Good thing we try to retain out senses of humour as we age.
@@WhiskyJason1300??? Nightmare... Thanks for the reviews Jason, it's educational and fun. One thing I noticed... Usually the whiskey you review is always worse than the whiskey you're comparing it to. I haven’t seen any other options from you... So, it turns out that if we go down the ladder of your reviews, we will come to the best whiskey in the world? :))
Overpriced is an understatement for Dalmore. I've had the Dalmore 12 when it was $40 and it was ok. I bought the Dalmore 18 for about $100 several years ago and I agree with your opinion "C-". Where I live in CA. the 18 is between $250-$300, what a joke. All Dalmore products start in an Ex-bourbon cask and finished in some other cask. I'm sure Dalmore makes a very good bottle, but I'm not shelling out the money for the 25 or 30 yr. I did buy a Dalmore 10 yr cask strength Independent bottle by "Hart Brothers" first fill, non-chilled at 56.1 for $70. When I open it, I hope to taste something good, who knows. I personally don't recommend any annual releases by Dalmore. I don't know how they stay in business. Great review.

Glenallachie was the new Glenallachie

yep - most 18 + malts are now also out of my reach.
Excellent review, Jason. I found a place that sells it for $160 here but it doesn’t sound worth even that price.
for me no - but that is a good price
I love the Dalmore. The 14 may be my fav
ok happy for you
Loch Lomond 18. Price is still ok here in Norway and every year it is getting better.
and every year it is getting better - YEP!!!
What has The Deveron to do with Singleton of Dufftown? Deveron is Mac Duff distillery.PS: my favorite 18 is Bunna.
TRUE - Deveron is from the Macduff distillery
what would you advice to buy by $280: The Dalmore 18 0.7L 2011 or Macallan 18 fine oak 2005 ?
Macallan 18 fine oak - costs about 350€ over here in Germany
Dalmore 18 costs about 250€
Deanston 18- brilliant
Thanks!
100% agree
Dalmore always tastes better when you find it down the back of the sofa
WOW - LOL!
Speyburn 18 is the best value for money. Quality wise, it can easily keep up with the Macallan 18 double oak for less than a third of the retail price!
I totally disagree with Speyburn 18 keeping up with Macallan 18 double oak taste wise. But Speyburn 18 is the MUCH better value for money

Old Pulteny 18 is nice - but I still that old Old Pulteny 17 :-(
@@WhiskyJason1 I will search for the 17 but I don’t think I will ever find it, at least not in Colorado.

I sense too much prejudice for Dalmore in this video. I think it is really great on palate:)
Why do you think so?

price is important to me

How much is Laphroaig 18? I have two bottles left. How is Laphroaig 16?
Laphroaig 18 costs about $300 here in Germany
That’s an excellent price for an outstanding scotch. But, how is the Laphroaig 16? Have you reviewed it yet?
www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/137954/laphroaig-16-year-old
Nope - no review from me on that

I don't know how they stay in business - I think travel retail is their secret
18 year old Scotch prices are unsustainable
yep :-(
My favorite 18 YO Would be Ledaig. Affordable and awesome.
Thanks for sharing!!
I passed on this for $130 and now it's $300 in the US. Yeesh.
Crazy!!!
You saved yourself $130.. Trust me
