On the 2019 F56 Sport 3 door, it’s a bit different. The panel and door are the same; there’s the one screw and four clips (one of which snapped off upon panel pull off). What’s different is that you can open the door but only partially. You can’t even see the door because of the panel I’m about to mention. There a black panel under the glove compartment that needs to be removed in order to open the door fully to access the filters. I tried for 20 minutes to remove the filters before removing the other panel but there wasn’t enough room to easily pull it out and I didn’t want to damage a new one trying to jam it in. There was no visibility with that black panel in place. Once removed it made things much easier.
If you have a 2020 or newer Mini 3 Door Hardtop see Jerad Vochaska’s video titled “2020 Mini Cooper S Cabin Filter Replacement” - you will avoid breaking things and it will make your job much easier. Thank you for creating this video though - it was a good start to the job.
Super helpful, I have a Haynes manual (online) that tells nothing of this, T20 bit was spot on my 2015 model yr. I used the OEM/BMW charcoal filter pack , and didn't note that there is a bottom one (denoted by three round plastic nubs at the bottom side of filter) and one for the top (without the plastic nubs), made it difficult to place filters in until I realized this and put the proper filter in first.
Mini engineers should be ashamed of themselves. This is SOOOOOO much harder than it needs to be. I have a F56 Cooper S , it was easier on my R56 Cooper S. WTF
Deberíamos darle un premio al ingeniero de BMW que ubicó y diseño la instalación del filtro del aire de la cabina del Mini F56, una porqueria!!! Y que me dicen de la instalación de la batería, hay que desbaratar medio carro.
Two comments on what is otherwise a good video. 1) you could have shown the footlight well light clip being detached..it is attached to the pull out panel. A lot of folks break these wire connections when not shown how to easily remove. 2) for some unknown reason my 2016 Gen 3 F56 S has the complete opposite filter door...the pin is actually on the bottom of mine so when it just popped off and fell out, I didn't notice until I went to put it back in...which was frustrating because your video clearly has the opposite with the pin at the top Again, excellent video. Keep them coming!
super helpful video. i have an 2018 s. BMW OEM cabin filter was from Denso while the engine air filter was Mann. I also used Hengst for both, excellent quality. Hengst bluecare for the cabin filter. Just a callout as shown in your video, install the filter with the flap outward which serves as a flap to pull for removing the filter. The original filter was installed backward, the flap was on the inner side, nothing to grab for removal. pita to remove.
Thanks for the video with clear instructions. I missed where You took off the Filter access door (must have been cut in editing - noticed at end when you re-installed) which would have made it a tiny bit easier. If it was not in such a tough spot, it would be a piece of cake. Gotta do a body warm up before & stretching after........smile.
Thanks this video was extremely helpful! I have one quick question though? Which way should the arrows be facing on the filters? In towards the cabin or out towards the engine?
The air flow filters have tabs only on one side that run the length of the filter; "top to bottom." These clearly face towards the engine in this video @ 1.25

Mike, you mention that this is for 3rd generation Mini's but when you are almost putting the filters in you say "2nd generation" . I have a 2019 Mini s Cooper 4 door and the inside does not look like the one you show in this video. Thoughts?
hi there, what about the microfilter? I am having a bit of "sweaty" smell inside my Mini, i've just completely cleaned all carpets and all seats with a cleaner product and i am thinking doing these filters next, there's still a little bit of smell, usually in the mornings, driving me nuts! :) If i change this filter you have shown in the video, do you think it will remove the sweaty smell? or it is the microfilter in fact? (seems to be under the hood that one). thank you
The smell is from bacteria trapped in the evaporator behind the dash. Some shops especially the dealer will sell a/n evaporator cleaning service. It uses a pleasant smelling chemical to kill and clean the evaporator and ducting. It is worth doing. And replacing the cabin air filter is recommended at that time too.
Hi mike, i own a 2015 mini cooper S and I don’t think I’ve changed the filters since i have gotten it. I was wondering what brand you would recommend, i only ask because id rather ask someone who works with minis, thanks!😊
Hi there are many brands. We use HENGST or MANN-FILTER brands. But when purchasing a filter just make sure it is an " ACTIVE CARBON " style. They are best at trapping other pollutants and preventing mold/mildew and smells.
@@MikeMDs thanks mike! I actually went ahead and replaced it. I knew i had to replace it because my car started to jerk really bad , once I took them out they were filthy. My only problem is my car isn’t accelerating properly, but its not as bad as it was before I replaced both cabin and engine. The dealership is trying to tell me that i need a new gear shift selector, thats 2k! And I know it has something to so with my air intake, they just wont listen to me. Any advice? I think something got clogged up somewhere
Thank you for this awesome video, but for the life of me, I CANNOT get the first vertical filter to go into place without breaking my fingers! What's the trick to accomplish this PLEASE and Thank you???
It should go down if you push it in although there will be about 1/2" to 1" of it still sticking up. The second filter goes on top. Push the second filter as high up as you can, and then push it in, on top of the lower filter.
I've got a 2020 Cooper Countryman S.....the panel looks different than the one in your video. There's no "pull handle" molded in. There is ONE T-20 that I can remove but I'm hesitant to pull out....seems to extend to the footwell light. Any advice?....I hate to just yank for fear of breaking something. Also because the panel looks different I fear that the filter box may also be different behind the panel. your thoughts?
I thought I was the only one. I can’t find info anywhere I have no pull handle and it looks totally different when I popped my panel off. I couldn’t find the filter.
The filter door just disappears @ 1.05. I plan to try and just leave it on during replacement, but good thing he showed the trick to getting it back on if it "comes off." I guess yiu just reverse it to remove it, "pull up and then out."
that is not a 2016 mini clubman S, I can't find any info on replacing the cabin filter on my 2016 mini clubman S. all the videos /pictures shown are different from my mini. I've taken half of the passenger side under dash apart and still cannot find the cabin air filter.
For those that do not have the handle to pull the door off, remove the T20 screw on the lower panel. Use a pick took to disconnect the floor lighting. Comes off easy. Then take the two T20 screws from either side of the cover near the airbag cover. Then using a pick, disconnect the fan and set aside. Flip open the cabin air filter door and then take the cabin filter door off by lifting up on the hinge door and it will slide out of its housing. This makes it way easier to remove (top then bottom), then install (bottom then top). Airflow goes from front of the car to the rear (or to your left if you're looking at the air filter housing). This is where a Brit engineer is getting revenge on the Germans for taking their brand and making it better! Only problem, it's huge pain in the rear doing this yourself!! Way harder than it should have been!!
For 2023 it is so much harder. You have to remove a second panel under the glove box, there's two screws holding it on and some clips. Mini is a shit for making this so hard. Every other car I've owned: pop the glove box down, there it is. These jackasses make it harder than changing the oil.

This was super-useful and made the swap an easy job. Small thing: For whatever reason, the screw in mine took a T15 bit, not a T20.
Same with me. T15 not T20, on a 2016 JCW Mini Cooper hardtop. 10 minute job the first time, next time will be 7 1/2 mins.
This video worked for a 2020 JCW Convertible mini. Saved me a fortune on dealer service charges!
Ha Ha glad it helped. It's too easy to pay someone to do it for you.

A bit of a pain but well worth it, a great money saver. Thanks.

Thanks, your video was very helpful. The panel on my F54 Mini Clubman was slightly different, but the airfilter door position was similar.
Good to know. Thanks.
Best 2016 cabin air filter replacement video available... recommend more detail / specifics on reinstalling the trim panel.

Yes!
Thank you just saved us a service fee
Great video- do the arrows on the air filter need to point toward the driver or toward the engine?
I don't remember of the top of my head but i believe it points to the back of the car. The ole one should have an arrow on it somewhere to reference.
Thanks Mike!
You bet!
thank you so so much!!!!

Great video! Is there an airflow direction for these filters? If so, you forgot to mention it.
Yes! Thanks for that. The arrow of flow is displayed on the white edge of the filter. The old one will have it as well so you can match it.
Some of the off brands dont have an arrow, just the tab. Any advice?

It may just be low on a/c refrigerant. It would need to be diagnosed and serviced accordingly.

No

Same for 2017 Cooper clubman?

Yes bro

I can’t figure out this “locking tab” you are talking about!! 😂
You can see it at 0.49 It's a black slot right next to the red electrical cable.
Should I remove glove box before trying this?
No you don't need to do that, just the panel.
is the usb port ambient light accessible from behind this cover?
How did you get the top one out?
I just use my fingers and pinch it and pull it down
I lost the t20bolt that fastens the big panel. Anyone know the part number?
Not even close to being that easy. I should not have to remove a bunch of parts under the glove box just to change these filters. So infuriating 😡😡

How do I have a 2014 3rd generation 😂
You are right. Some models overlap a year from 2nd gen to 3rd gen.
My Mini Cooper ac rotates from blowing hot air to cold air. It repeats this over and over. Could changing this filter fix that?
The filter wont fix that. If it is a second gen MINI then it could be the control panel.
Not the best engineering on this one 🤦♂
trust me this is still easy
