I married a Slovenian woman 15 years ago. I think you have described what I concluded after our 1st trip together to Ljubljana 2 years into our marriage. Slovenians are a just tall hobbits!!! Just add 3 things to your description. 1. Mushroom hunting is their national past time 2. Their past president raised honey bees 3. Every hiking trail ends in a restaurant.
So true about Slovenes and their gardens. My family is from Slovenia (I was born in USA) unfortunately was not taught Slovene nor been to Slovenia yet, but my great grandmother and grandfather shared their love of plants with me, which has made me study to become a botanist in South Florida. 😎
Greetings from your neighbor, Hungary! I have been to Slovenia this summer. Well... you have the "love" word in your country's name. Anyone who comes to Slovenia will love it a lot. I visited Celje, Maribor and Bled. Talking about gardens: I liked how straight their grass looks and how clean their garden is. Moreover, I liked they do not have huge fences and their windows are always open. This takes me to the next point: Slovenes are open-minded. Their behavior and attitude led them to become a potential success story of the 21st century. Slovene's love of order and cleanliness comes from Austria (Ordnung muss sein). The love for conversations and chilling comes from Italy (la dolce vita). The extreme weddings are from the Balkans and also a bit of Hungary.
It's interesting to see her talk about Slovene customs as seen from someone with American eyes. I'm a third generation Slovene; my paternal grandfather left the area in 1910 and my paternal grandmother was born in Michigan to Austrian/Slovene parents. I wonder how many Slovenian customs/behaviors were passed down to me. I can tell you only a few customs I inherited: 1. I am much more blunt than my neighbors. Asking me if I like or dislike something gets a quick yes or no w/o further comment. Maybe I learned that behavior from my dad. 2. My dad loved to plant a garden but I never did that. Too much work! 3. I'm "casual". But I grew up broke, too. I didn't have much to "dress up". 4. The language wasn't passed down to me. 5. Polka music was enjoyed in my dad's house, especially Frankie Yankovic. 6. I did get a lot of help with my hobby in Slovenian genealogy. I needed a lot of help, too. I had little data on where my grandfather came from and what little data I had didn't agree with each other. The native Slovenes helped me find the proper church records that recorded my grandfather's birth and tracked down two descendants of my great grandparents.
I live in Slovenia. I can show you around. Remember 2 things: Slovenia' s capital is Ljubljana and there is about 2 milion of slovenes. We also have beautiful landscape, clean rivers and we have Luka Dončič.
heheheh. Slovene are a lovely bunch. I was a few day ago in From near Maribor, I was really blow away by the friendliness and people generosity. And mind you , I'm originally from the Italian alps, we still have unsolved silly issues after WW2 stuff. I've felt as welcomed just in Poland and Slovakia in my life. God bless Slovenia and the beautiful Slovenian people. Is you manage to have Trst in Slovenia , please, do take also Bergamo and Brescia as exclave. We would love to be with youse lads :-)
Thomas Kreuzer Don’t worry. Our post WWI issues with Italian fascists and concentration camps of Gonars and Rab aren’t forgotten either. However, unlike you, I don’t hold it against Italians of today. I don’t believe in sons paying for the sins of their fathers, or being responsible for them. As long as Italians are nice to me, I’ll be nice to them and to any other people of good will also.
So true about going out for coffee. I visited a friend in Kranj, and she took me out for coffee a couple of time, and I was fairly surprised we sat there for a few hours or so, sipping on our coffee
I love Slovenia. Great video, Mariah. I've been there 3 times, this last visit was 5 mos. Everything said in this video is true for my experiences mostly in Ljubljana. Your husband sounds and looks just like my son-in-law. I would love to live there, but the language! Its true that Slovenes love to help with their language, but they also love speaking English so they can improve their speaking ability. Hvala Slovenija !!
Ha! I love this. I also married a Slovene man (I am Irish) and the honestly point is so so true. If I get a new dress that I really love its always best to wait for a complement because if you ask "So, what do you think???" you may not like the super honest answer! :-)
All these facts are really true... I'm a slovene myself... And I really wanna learn English. I'm doing a good job. So good to you.. Doing very good on your Slovenian.
I love their zest for life. No matter how things may be economically, they will try and have good time with those they like. I also love the fact that most of them drink, sing and dance. They are also hard working, and family oriented.
Hello, I have just found this video and I fell in love with it! Amazing. I am from Slovakia, which is a country little more on the north. And almost everything you say about Slovenes and Slovenia fits to us Slovaks. Wow. I didn't know we are so similar. And also language sounds quite similar to me. ;)

Very nice video. About the first topic that we don't dress up, Slovenes tend to dress more conservative but still elegant, we don't like the shiny jewelry and clothes (I think it's a little like the rule more is less), or maybe you thought the people from countries on the south of Slovenia they tend to wear "trenirkas" (training pants) almost all the time, but they aren't Slovenians. It is very pleasing to watch this video cause you are so amazed by some things that seem normal to us and you see them so positively, so I thank you for that! And you look very good together, all the best! 😀
Well they pay taxes so they probably are Slovenians they just were not born here or their parents came from other southern countries. I don't get it why you discriminate them based on some stereotypes with traning pants
Your first topic that "Slovenes are so casual" I was like THAT IS SO TRUE! haha my husband is Slovene and I am British Indian and whenever there is a party I am so used to being over dressed and elaborate and everyone is laid back and casual, so I definitely can relate! I really have learnt to embrace the more casual style now, not to mention how active I have become! Something I also love about Slovenes :D
The fact about slovenians being nice to strangers is interesting, because we really are very nice to everyone... who isn't from Balkan. If it is, we'll be like cats and dogs. I don't know why it's like that, maybe because of our history. PS: great video as always

Thanks for the video. It is very interesting to learn those things. I get the impression that there are far fewer a**holes there than here in the U.S. Is that true? If it is, combined with everything else you said, it makes me think the U.S. should model it's society after that of Slovenia. I also love the idea of the honesty. I met someone recently who told me that she doesn't lie. It confused me. At first I thought it couldn't be true. (sad commentary on Americans) I thought about it more, it occurred to me how much easier interacting with her would be. I'm a photographer and she was the person I was photographing. Aussies are nice to pregnant women, too and are also nice to kids. It's a great place to raise kids. As for the other points, I totally agree with them as well.
I think West coast Americans call walks "hikes." East Coast Americans call walks -- "Walks". New Yorker's might take a walk around town after dinner. A hike would be a definite change of clothes into "hiking" gear in to a large forested area for a protracted amount of time (perhaps even up a large hill or mountain). I don't think it's a 'hike' unless you are going up a steep incline.
there are some countries that are not kind to outsiders. here in Slovenia things are different, we hate eachother so much, that we like outsiders more than our people. kinda sad:(
Slovenes love hearing good stuff about themselves:))
no shit
Yep Were like that xD
Maybe because we were suppressed from all countries around us during our independence despite our smallness.
Zagotovo.
Who doesn't love hearing good stuff :)
True

Don't forget we also have cities with fairly high population density and many don't have gardens.
Oooh. Gardens! Yes.
I'm from Slovenia.😆😄
Hvala za to
I think West coast Americans call walks "hikes." East Coast Americans call walks -- "Walks". New Yorker's might take a walk around town after dinner. A hike would be a definite change of clothes into "hiking" gear in to a large forested area for a protracted amount of time (perhaps even up a large hill or mountain). I don't think it's a 'hike' unless you are going up a steep incline.
there are some countries that are not kind to outsiders. here in Slovenia things are different, we hate eachother so much, that we like outsiders more than our people. kinda sad:(
ahhahaha it is Balkan everything is possible 😂😂
I"m from Slovenia
thanks
I would say
Iti na pohod = to go hiking
Iti na sprehod = to go for a walk
Thank you, that you like slovenia
