I actually bought one recently as a knockaround camera and I personally think it's a blast to shoot with! It's a nice break after shooting with the pro stuff and I feel like I am breaking the rules every time I pick it up. Dynamic range is not very good, but I think the image has more soul and character to it than any of the other GH or G cameras. Mine is hacked with PTool and produces 23.976fps. I haven't had very many issues with it crashing either. I shot with it over four days, and I think it locked up and needed a battery pull maybe 5 times, which I was okay with. I really enjoy your older camera reviews. I like the idea of creating more with less.
@@steve_heise Sorry i totally disagree. Companies are limiting specs! I just got a GH1 and being a GH5 user in the past its so easy to use. I have don't the Hack it took me around 20 mins of watching tutorials. Then it was sorted. Not has any issues with it. I am also a EOS M with Magic lantern user. thats alot more harder to do then the PTool.
Just saw this. Thanks for the review. The video and images you took look really great. Raw still files from the camera always surprise me how good they are. The GH1 and 2 have a certain character to the video quality even though they don't have the highest specs. My hacked GH1 has never crashed. You really need the program Neoscene to remove the pulldown properly and see the video at the best quality. The reason for the weird 24P in a 60i wrapper is so that you could see the footage when connected to tube TVs which couldn't display native 24P. I always use an external audio recorder so the built in sound of the GH1 serves only as a scratch track. Thanks again for the thorough review.
Im a collector/ hobbyist and I had this camera I bought it just before the pandemic and used it on a vacation. My biggest problem is i get bored and trade out my cameras like third string ball players. I don’t use them long enough to thoroughly know all the pluses and minuses so I didn’t notice everything you did. Thanks for this review I might buy another one just for the hell of it.
You did not cover the firmware hack that lets you do 100+mbps and 24 / 30 progressive instead of interlacing? Its a must have firmware hack even if you just shoot pictures there some useful stuff in there like focus peaking.
I'm looking for a "third world" video tool. To me, I'd like to know how does it perform through HDMI... does it stream "clean HDMI" output, that is, without showing menus or icons on the screen? If this is the case, it could be a good tool for RUclips streaming and home studio stuff. Could you please say a comment about HDMI output of this camera? Thank you.
Another great review thanks. Now that you have put me off buying a GH1, any thoughts or plans to review the next camera on my list of cheap possibilities, the Olympus OMD EM1 mark 1?
A girl in Fb marketplace sells one GH1 for 95usd near my house. I'm tempted to buy it only for photography in a cheap way. The cheapest GH3 is 235usd, so more than double
@@steve_heise I want to thank you for your videos. For me making photos is a hobby that don't justify to spend much money, I don't need pro gear or even mid gear, and I don't have the money to spend. Is refreshing to listen a person who don't talk only about the greatest and latest. Your videos has been a excellent info source about cheap cameras and a reassurance that with an old camera we still can take pleasing shots. Because your videos and others I got Sony APSC (nex 5T, a6000, a3000, that I shoot with mostly vintage manual lenses) and I'm curious about m4/3. So thanks you and keep making videos! Have a happy new year!
Lol it was killer at the time. He’s way underestimating the cam and the video quality, particularly with the hack. I wouldn’t hesitate to use my [hacked] GH1 as a B camera even today, for professional work.
Thanks man...your reviews are great and fair...l do trust your reviews. Therefore, what is the best used camera do you recommend for photo shoot and vlogging today or best budget camera for the stated purposes?
Unfortunately I think the GH2 is pretty similar to the GH1. It still needed to be hacked to provide genuinely good image quality. It wasn’t until the GH3 that Panasonic really got it together.
Comparing with nikon 1 series, it seems not that bad. You have fully articulated screen, mic input, better lens system. Why did you have such bad experience?)
I think the problem is the GH1 gets judged a little harder since the GH3 is still so brilliant. Also, the Nikon 1 Series is a small 1 inch sensor that was geared towards a more casual audience whereas the GH1 was targeting more serious users. Plus the GH1 launched the whole GH line which would be Panasonic’s more professional line which eventually gave us great cameras like the GH5. The Nikon 1 Series never took itself that seriously. It was always just a “fun” sort of camera that you take on holiday and it always delivered in that sense. Also, the Nikon 1 Series was a lot cheaper when it was released whereas the GH1 debuted at $1,499.
The reason Im getting one of these is cuz I have a pro lens laying around 😅 and didnt want to spend alot of money on a camera….Im only using it for stills
I got 2 panasonic g1 cameras new 2008, blue and black now i am going to get red gh1 and hack it. I hink its cool to have all the original panasonic mirrorless in 3 original colors 😀
How hard is it to buy an 2.5mm adaptor for a mic? It's like a pointless whinge about something that is easily sorted out. Or invest in a voice recorder that you can then use with all your devices for superior audio. I recently picked up a mint GH1 (3.1k shutter count), with twin lens kit (also mint) for $100. Absolute bargain for something cheap to hack and experiment with.

Best review ever. No nonsense, just on point, thank you!
Almost every cam I searched in my budget u popped up..good to see someone actually making videos of old cameras...finally subscribed
Thanks Steven, I love your honest, clear reviews, my good friend! 👍🏾
Thanks! 😊

its hilarious how great it looks haha
I loved the videos of your cats! Good video too. Footage was pretty!

There's a firmware hack that allows for native 24p with no conversion to interlaced footage
Yes and use JES Deinterlacer
Appreciate that review.
Thanks!
I just picked one of these up at a yard sale but the language is set to something other than english. Is there a way to reset this?
the gh1 surprisingly is a total photo beast. enough in low light, reliable af, nice iq... steve, something went wrong here.
I very much like your videos because you chare your experience. Most camera reviews are just intellects scratching on the surface of specks
Thanks so much!
Hi, like your review on old camera, what about the gf 2 and gf 3, they are small and nice to carry around....
Thanks Steven, would you mind make a video talking about best video settings for GH3? I got mine for 250 USD and it's awesome...I love it.

The GX8 has the 2.5mm audio socket, as well. Very strange, unless they had something properitary with a 2,5 mm.

I have a GH1 and wondering if you tried any cheap aftermarket lenses to improve the photo quality? Great video
Thanks. I’ve mostly just been using the Olympus 17mm f1.8 or the Panasonic 25mm f1.4.
Great video

Which camera best youtube channel support butget
Also are used mirrorless cameras a much safer buy considering they dont have as much mechanical parts as old cameras with mirrors?
What lens were you using??? and . . . Panasonic G5 or Sony A5100 . . . . thanks!!! great content!!!

That’s a good price for the GH1. Mine was around $150 and my GH3 was around $250, I think.

Does it have touchscreen?
But if you got GH1 back in 2009, do you think it would have been a good camera for its time?
Lol it was killer at the time. He’s way underestimating the cam and the video quality, particularly with the hack. I wouldn’t hesitate to use my [hacked] GH1 as a B camera even today, for professional work.
I've never seen a 2.5 inch mic input.. that must be a beast. How do they fit that into a camera body? Lol

Hi Steve did you try to hack the gh1
Thanks
GH1 is a very good camera, however, hacked version is much much better. my hacked version never crashed.
Same!
Same!
Same
clean hdmi
Yeah that’s the major downside of the GH1 IMHO.
What about gh2?

Эта камера с хакнутой прошивкой снимает лучше камер дороже её в 4 раза))
