Impossible to stress enough the importance and significance of Kyu Sakamoto for the diffusion of Japanese culture all over the world. A great artist, a sweet memory. Thank you for this charming rendering of ones of his songs!

Louis-san, I had no idea that Kyu-chan (we used to call him that with an endearing heart) was that popular outside Japan! He truly was a great artist. He was also a very sweet and happy person who was always smiling. I cannot remember any other faces of him but a smiley face.

I was 9 yrs old when it was release in the US and I have loved the song ever since. It always stirred up feeling in me and I always wanted to sing along. Thanks to the lyrics i finally found online and now with your beautiful clear voice helping me hear the pronunciations better, I may be able to finally do it. Thank you. And I promise to do it in private to save everyone's ears. 😏

    Full lyrics:
This is the first non-educational Japanese song I learnt, and it's immediately topped a few of my favourite English songs too. Thanks

I had Sakamoto-san's record, the original, on a 45 rpm back in 1964. It was on the Capital label. I had probably inherited it (re took without asking) from my older brother or sister. The Beatles were also on Capital at the time, so this record caught my attention. This song and the B-side started my fascination with the Japanese language.

Such a sad story - the singer died in a plane crash that happened so slowly that passengers had time to write farewell notes to their loved ones. Amongst them a letter from Kyu Sakamoto to his wife. 😢

Is it resolve because one must persevere even though one is all alone? Is it despair because one is all alone and happiness is far away beyond the clouds? Is it just ganbatte?
