Soldevanahalli Halt, KA.
A small compilation showing the acceleration of 3100hp ALCO WDG3A and 4500hp EMD WDG4 as they set off after a short halt at Soldevanahalli. WDG3A 13297 was in charge of the Arsikere-Bangalore Passenger and WDG4 12636 was with the Bangalore-Hubli Passenger.
The WDG4's take-off is one of the fastest train accelerations I have ever witnessed! Not exactly how an EMD locomotive is supposed to be notched up, but was fun to watch nevertheless.
Camera: Panasonic HC-V750.
I don't know how many times I have watched this video, but I still keep coming back to it, all because of that superb acceleration of that EMD.
Glad you enjoy it!

Yeah broo🔥🔥
I know it's peace for ears for people like us!!!!(railfans!!!)
WOW that EMD is a hot rod! What a beast!
EMD RULES!!!
@@nathanielbolden5053 nah man ALCo Rules!
That acceleration in wdp4 engine was deadly
Yes, but i don't know why people say alco's are the king 😡
@Shubham Tiwari chill. All diesels are Kings.
never expected this much quick acceleration from WDG-4. loved the chugging of WDG-3A too
True
Wdg 4 nhi bhai wdp 4 ❤
That's a WDG4.

Ha bhai thik se notice nhi kiya tha 😅
My god!. That EMD! I mean I love Alco but holy crap. That EMD sounded amazing and took off like a rocket!
Yes 😎
16 Cylinder Power 💪⚡
@@ZRider-eu4fc both alco and emd were 16 cylinders
Its sounds really great in real.
I love the old trusty Alco's but nothing makes a beautiful mechanical rumble like those big EMD's.
Bro, those EMD are MONSTERS, and especially the WDP4D Twin Cab models. This EMD was just a WDG4 model.
Alco WDM3D, WDM3A, WDG3A etc are good, yes, but I think that EMD is the best!!!
@@bootstrapbaron2931 I grew up listening to SD40-2's rumbling down an MKT line near my house when I was a kid. When they would hit notch 4 you could feel it in the house.
@@Shane-Singleton oh i hear it everyday rn. My house is near the station and everytime the train starts accelerating, the windows would shake and one time it the glass fell off 🤣

EMD=GMC!!!....LONG LIVE GM!!!
Sound: ALCO wins
@@tyres123 Nope. As much as I love ALCOs and their distinctive wheezing chug, nothing beats a notched out turbo'd EMD 567, 645 or 710.
@@keithode1737 Oh yeah, that thundering engine with the accompanying screaming turbo. Awesome sound!
yeah coz the EMD has more power and it is 2 stroke engine
1:47 real sound of turbocharged engine 🤤🤤
Both are turbocharged you idiot.
😂😂
I think so such an acceleration would even beat the acceleration of wap7.. I am a wdg4 series fan but I love the alcos chugging.. Nice video
Without coaches the EMD will be almost having acceleration of Luna..
Awesome EMD acceleration!!!
+Akash G. Yes !!!! that Sound !!!! ohh !!!!! just magnificent !!!

EMD has grater acceleration because it's gear ratio helps them to catch speed in less time with max initial torque.
@@kanishkabokephoderailaviat6977 stupid,EMD has a 2 stroke engine ,means its has more power delivery than Alco. Also torque is just a function of Power in case of IC engines.
@@kanishkabokephoderailaviat6977 if you say ALCO is a 2 stroke,i can understand your level. You also dont know whats an IC engine also...
craziest acceleration i have ever seen.... and that sound while acceleration... jet engine😍😍😍😍😍 WDG 4 #emd

EMD posseses 16 cylinder 2 stroke diesel engine.
End🔥 beast ever
Bro it’s wdg4 not wdp4
Bro u r where 😁
That's actually kind of a dirty exhaust for an EMD, but the engineer is really pushing the throttle pretty hard. As a railfan in the US, I've been around EMDs all my life, and I never tire of the sound of a turbocharged 567, 645 or 710. What is amazing to me is that by US standards, that train is severely underpowered, 18 passenger cars here would rate at least 2 locomotives (most US passenger units are 4,000 hp), but as always EMD comes through.
YES,,,,FULL THROTTLE WHEN THE SPEED TRAIN IS APPROX 15MPH IN MY POOR COUNTRY, ARGENTINE,,LOCOS HAVE AVERAGE 2000HP NO MORE EXCEPTION GM LOCOS, WITH 2500HP,FROM1970!!!!!
i suppose that the traction force in the EMD is about 70 tons at the start and at low speed,,,decreasing with the speed,,,and surely that the EMD only (without load) may accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 30 seconds,,the power/weight ratio may be between 35 or 40 kg/hp,,,and it is enough for high accelerations,,and the engine rises quicly in rpm,,beautiful video,,i suppose is a 2 stroke engine,,the sond gives me this sensation,,,,the Alco,,,sure four strokes,,,,
Are the 2 types geared for different speeds? Most US freight locomotives are geared for about 105-110 kph, passenger units are usually at least 150 kph (for acceleration, most US main lines have a top speed of 70-79 mph/112-127 kph).
nomon95 I'm sorry I can't comment on the exact values as I am an electrical engineer. But yeah I do know that the alco is a 4 stroke and the EMD is a 2 stroke engine :)
thanks for your answer
Straight to eight! That's how its done, son!
No harm in being a tad overzealous. I bed that train arrived and hour before schedule :P
Damaging piston heads
The honking of alco locomotives was mind blowing...🙂❤
Nothing can replace it , it's not just a locomotive it's an emotion...
But for electrifying all rail routes we are going to loose our alco diesel locomotives...
It hurts so much 😢💔
You are right
mproved version of the WDG4 EMD
V16 2-Stroke Turbo Diesel GM-EMD 16-710
Rated Power Output: 4500 hp
Production Period: 2010 to Present
Number Produced: 85+
Wheel Arrangement: Co-Co
Top (Rated) Speed: 130 kph
Though classified WDP and designed to overcome the shortcomings of the WDP4, the WDP4B is actually a modified version of the WDG4 and not of the WDP4. It has 6 traction motors for all the six axles like the WDG4, has a tractive effort of 40t (385 kN) compared to the WDG4’s 55t (570kN) and the WDP4s 28t (270kN) and axle load of 20.2t slightly lesser than the WDG4’s 21t and same operational speed (130 kph) of the WDG4. The reworked EMD engine outputs 4500 hp. The WDP4B also has a much more rounded “softer” aerodynamic front-end with the cabin slightly wider than the loco body to provide bigger windows for better visibility, which also took away the fierce, menacing front-end look of the original EMD. All other specs remained the same as that of the WDG4 including all the technological goodies. However, they did not do anything about the cab design and the LHF end was unfortunately left untouched retaining its weird house-shaped look as the loco continued with one cab. The WDP4B hence was suited for hauling longer trains at somewhat higher speed than the WDP4.

THNX FOR SHARING UR KNOWLEDGE
0:48 this is my favourite sound and what i was waiting for. FULL ACCELERATION!!
That EMD loco pilot is really experienced on accelerating faster.
Notching up EMDs like that is what causes them to break down after a certain point of time. Experience doesn't mean jumping through notches and then sitting at Notch 8 within 300m of departure. It can be done in ALCOs but these EMDs need to be notched up steadily.
@@dheerajrao I always prefer steady acceleration, whatever the locomotive is ALCo, EMD or GE. Because overloading the engines, generators and motors always have serious consequences.
Why is that ALCOs can be notched up faster than EMDs? Is there a technical reason that you know of? @@dheerajrao
That acceleration was better than WAP7 🤩🤩 EMD rocks!!
But the senseless IR is removing it from service😢
Have to hand it to that EMD......that’s some serious acceleration
Both Locos work on different technology. EMDs are more fuel efficient with improved rate of acceleration.
I Am more of ALCO FAN but this EMD is super aggressive and ACCELERATED like Rocket
THAT WAS CRAZY ACCELERATION FUN TO WATCH THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO
SWR LPs are absolute maniacs. Such aggression! Love this!!
The EMD acceleration was way better than the ALCO. EMD wins. Great video 👍.
nice...holy cow acceleration by EMD...loved the alco sounds!!
Alco's engine sound is lovely 😀❤️and my God! That smoke 😀and yes EMD has lovely engine sound too 👍🏼we love IR ❤️🙏🏻
EMD in 'sports' mode ;)
This is one of the best acceleration on RUclips.
emd has better acceleration than alco. but alco has better sound than emd. so both are lovely
Ryt bro.
Emd has better sound
Function over form, my friend. Older engines always sound better, no matter the vehicle. Old Cummins diesel sounds better than Benz, old HEMI v8 sounds better than German 4.0 bi-turbo and the list goes on. But we need to be concerned about efficiency first!
LOL!!!!!😜😜😜😜😜
Both sounds lovely...do not talk negatively...I am WDM4 Father of WDG3A.
Hat's off to the LP ! What a pick-up by the EMD !
2 stroke 💪
that was great entertainment. The EMD laying a good beatdown on that old Alco.
The ALCO still has a pretty macho presence though.

Awesome !
That EMD driver was having fun !
01:41 💀 WDG 4 Starts smoking 👹 damn that acceleration 🗿
What an acceleration! That's why emd's are my favourite
Beautiful sounds. The venerable ALCo, with its immense torque at low RPM, and the unleashed power of the EMD 645 (710) in its latest development. Excellent video!
Thank you!
Thats amazing. EMD acceleration is like WAP5. Less smoke too.
I never seen such a fantastic EMD locomotive. Wow
Very impressive footage specially the rapid acceleration of wdg4.mind blowing😘
Wow, the traction that EMD gets to get that train moving that fast.
It's one of our top freight haulers so a passenger train is an easy task with the pilots notching it up so quickly
Bro the Emd was a Beast great video!
Thank you!
The EMD simply destroys the Alco - it's beautiful! Thanks for the comparison.
Thanks for watching!

Yeah
Just when I thought the acceleration from Alco was too good, the EMD just takes off like a rocket. Couldn't resist but watch it more than once.
That WDG acceleration was SICK !
Ooohhh man that two stroke EMD had a brutal acceleration. Alongwith the symphony of that supercharger whine.
Crazy !!! That EMD has a WAP kind of acceleration ....amazing !
EMD model is not only stronger than ALCO, it also has a better pickup. See how quickly it achieved acceleration at 80kmph in almost no time.
80kmph? Where in this video is a train doing 80kmph? 😮
That was incredible acceleration!
EMD works life butter so smooth.
What an amazing acceleration by the EMD. Alco wins hands down for the pure raw sound 🙌
I like the jet engine sounds from EMD 😍
Emd has lesser smoke and more acceleration than alcos and also Boeing aircraft like sound which makes it a beast altogether!!! 😍🔥
Even me I am watching so many times , just in love of STARTING speed of That super EMD
Awesome acceleration...can never hope to catch this one! 😨
That EMD definitely won, what a beast acceleration
This is first time I have seen crazy acceleration of EMD. I am ALCo fan but this acceleration was even superior to 3 phase electrics. If some one have link of such another example of crazy acceleration of 3 phase electrics then please put it here.
Nice video and thanks for sharing
EMDs also have 3 phase ac traction motors.
the difference is Alco has 4 strokes, the engine have a jet lag in low rpm,the generator make a "brake"when is delivering current for the motors. the motors here are not the question, the reality is the adventage of a 2 strokes engine, because the charger quickly rise up to boost air to the cylinders chamber. 4 strokes the charger need more time, because 4 strokes.2 turns, and the charger blow air in 0,5 turn. 2 strokes 1 turn the charger blow in 0,5 turn here is the adventage of 2 strokes %blowing 2 strokes
@@istiakalam7429 I was referring to 3 phase electrics like WAP5 or WAP7. I very well know that both have 3 phase squirrel cage induction motors.
@@nomon95 I was referring to 3 phase electric locomotives like WAP5 or WAP7 and comparing thier acceleration to that of EMD. Both have AC motors.
EMD has grater acceleration because it's gear ratio helps them to catch speed in less time with max initial torque.
yeap, and 2 strokes ,always win,the charger boost very quickly, more torque and power at lows rpm at full throttle. But,,3300 vs 4400 makes too the difference.
Wow ALCO sounds like a helicopter..... 😍😍😍 EMD like jet engine.... 💪💪💪
because emd is a 2 strokes cycle diesel.. and the charger enter boosting very quickly.
@@nomon95 yeah bro
Superb smoking by both the technologies & nice pickup by EMD
Fantastic pick up by the EMD
My God.....EMD WDP 4..... ABSOLUTE MONSTER
EMD is more powerfull and smokeless than ALCOs
EMD engine is in better shape as well. That old 251 needs work.
@@douro20 I do agree, however, IR is pretty much done with the ALCOs. A few prestigious and rare locomotives were rebuilt, the rest are either scrapped or converted to electric locomotives. This annoys me greatly, however, the inevitable march of time and technology and so on. Besides, the EMD locomotives are much more efficient, and significantly more powerful.
On turbocharged EMD engines, the turbocharger is connected to the engine by a gear drive that turns it until the engine builds up enough exhaust pressure to spin the turbocharger on its own. This eliminates the "turbocharger lag" of Alco and GE engines where the engine runs "rich" ( too much fuel for the amount of air) until the turbo can catch up.
@@summushieremiasclarkson4700 - American railroads figured that out in the 1960s. ALCOS require more maintenence, and shop crews that really understand how to maintain them. EMDs require less attention.
That 2 Stroker literally took off like a jet 🔥
When it comes to diesel, yes some 2 stroke gas engines can sound good but not as good as diesel
Isn't the Alco 2 stroke?
Viv B no its 4 stroke
@@vivekbarchha alco is 4 stroke
@@fluffyluke9174 ALCO is 4 stroke, EMD is 2 stroke (here), and this is true of all diesel-electric locomotives owned by Indian Railways.
The good old days of icf coaches and that chugging alco
Engineer instantly rammed the throttle to top notch and it hurtled like a rocket, that too with less smoke too!
For an EMD, this is more than enough smoke. These 2-stroke engines are known for less smoke.
The EMD made it look like the train did not even stop at the station! Crazy acceleration!
EMD ne kya speed pakda kuchh chand minitome, par ALCo is my favourite, its chugging sound , and heavy smoke............alco ki jagah koi aur loco nahi le sakta..

I have to continuously watch this video everyday
Still watching to this day ❤❤
Just a treat to watch! Good diesel package! SDVL is a good place for crazy acceleration shows!
The difference is astonishing! Cleaner, faster, smoother, safer and also more comfortable for the locomotive pilot. Here we have Modi talking about 'bullet trains' these old 'chuk-chuk-chuk' ALCOs should only be relegated to short freight use.
The EMD's acceleration is anything but smooth and safe. That is not how EMD locomotives are supposed to be notched up. Repeated use like this will result in more frequent visits to the shed for maintenance.
This engine and the IFC coaches are love
Awesome emd ❤❤❤👌👌

Second vaale video me bahot jaldi speed 🚄🚅🚅🚅🚅 pakad liya yarr ek dam metro ki tarah
Very well contrasted; emd picked up speed so quickly.
Unbelievable acceleration by the EMD WDP4 🔥
That's a WDG4. WDP4 wouldn't be able to get off the line so quickly
@@dheerajrao which is more powerful wdg4 or wdp4?
As the name suggests, both have the same power. The difference lies in gearing and traction motors. WDP4s come with 4 traction motors for 6 axles, whereas WDG4s come with 6. Many WDP4s have now been upgraded to 6 traction motors as well. WDG4s may have better initial acceleration because they're geared to pull loaded freight trains with max tractive effort. After a certain point WDP4s will pull ahead much easily because they're geared for higher top speed, up to 160km/h.
I like the EMD acceleration sound, super aggressive!!
Its 2023 still addicted to this video 🥺
How in the world does the engineer see anything when the WDP-4 is operating backward?
i mean its not that hard to see on long hood
@@voidjavelin23 Perhaps, but the WDP-4 had those big radiators sticking out sideways.

In the beginning, did the WDG-3A have an extra headlamp in front of it, just above the walking ramp? Can anyone explain what was that device? Quite unusual. By the way, the acceleration of the EMD in the second half was tremendous. Seems like the LP was going desperate on the throttle.
This and a few other WDG3As had variations of low-mounted headlamp units serving as auxiliary lights for ghat operations at night and in the fog and rains, specifically in the Sakleshpur - Subrahmanya Road Ghat Section.
