The Main Distinction
The main difference between regular toothpaste and sensitive toothpaste is that sensitive toothpaste has extra ingredients that help make sensitive parts of your teeth less sensitive or protect them from getting hurt. The part of your teeth under the enamel is called dentin. As the enamel wears away, the sensitive dentin is shown. A sensitive toothpaste has more potassium nitrate in it, which fills in the holes in the enamel over time to help restore it. So, it will rebuild your teeth's protective layer and keep the dentin from showing.
When toothpaste for sensitive teeth works
When you have holes in the enamel of your teeth, sensitive toothpaste can help. Since this shows the sensitive dentin underneath, sensitive toothpaste can rebuild that layer to protect the dentin. Some sensitive toothpastes have less sugar and abrasives, which normally irritate nerves that are exposed. This also keeps sensitive parts of your teeth from getting in the way.
When sensitive toothpaste doesn't help
Other things that hurt your teeth can't be fixed with sensitive toothpaste. For instance, a broken tooth will always hurt, no matter what toothpaste you use. Sensitive toothpaste can't fix cavities, infected roots, damaged teeth, or nerves that are exposed. Tooth pain can also be caused by gum disease, which sensitive toothpaste can't fix on its own. All of these are problems that need to be treated in different ways by a dentist.
