  • Matt and Rudy from Cloverdale Forge sent out one of their self adjusting filing vises to test out. I have always found a good filing vise useful and this version is a step up in quality and function.

    Matt's a veritable genius. How his mind works, and how he comes up with these rather genius ideas, is one of those mysteries of the ages.

      Its 50 years of experience, probably learned from multiple mentors that worked for 50+ years before him. This is how true craftsmen learn all those little things that cut the job time in half without sacrificing quality.

    That self adjusting filing vise is one of the most brilliant things I've seen in a long time! It's like when Brian Brazeel came out with his hot cut hardy tool. It's just clever and it just works better. Great job!

    I've seen an old filing vise many years ago, I didn't know what it was and it was actually rusted so bad it wouldn't move. This looks like a great improvement and something I need to get for my shop. Thank you for the review.

    That's an awesome improvement on the filing vise's. Thanks to Matt and Rudy from Cloverdale Forge for sending you one to use and get your opinion on. Looks like it will be a winner for sure, clamping the jaws flat to both surfaces evenly improves the holding power so much it's unreal. Quality of filing goes way up and quicker too. Thanks for showing this review John, another great product. Fred.

    Brilliant thanks for showing it. I have just spent a few days researching filing vices and making one. Your earlier videos were invaluable thanks.
    My filing vice is quite different, but it tackles the same problems. It is more like a woodworkers moxxon vice, but made from metal and is only for smaller scale metalwork - copper smithing and jewellery making.
    That pivoting back jaw is making me think a little more and maybe I'll make another one, because I can see from you using it in this video how convenient it is.

    Great design. Anybody ever seen "planetary" vice-jaws?, kinda similar principle.
    I'm sure they're called something other than "planetary vice-jaws", but that's just off the top of my head, so....yeah.
    I don't have any either, just never "needed" them...as if that's something that's ever stopped me from buying a new tool before 😂, but yeah...just never picked one up yet. (would be a better explanation) 😂

    Everyone has an anvil height video. How about vise height? Do you suggest the height of the vise be just over waist height? Then the filling vise brings the work up a touch? Or is this “it depends” and better to have multiple vise setups? I would be very interested in your opinion!

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  3 месяца назад +2

      Sounds like a video for the future. Generally for filing about elbow height.

      Ear plugs or ear defenders maybe? Or just noise cancelling headphones and something better to listen to? I'm just offering suggestions by the way as I personally use noise cancelling headphones a lot while working on things due to similar sensory issues.

    why didn't they just put a screw in it? if one part was longer and could be hammered into wood or mounted on a table, you have a vise. even portable :D

  • @bol8lod

    Its indeed biased😂, the first filing vise was barely tightened i would like to see a similar force applied to both of them
