I like sets for onions that aren't for the storage. My storage onions, I grow from seeds, or starts. I hope you get a few sunny days in the garden before the black flies show up.🤞
I thought i read somewhere to plant the onion bulb half in soil. Good or should i push them down further?
Do you fertilizer with peletted hen manure? How often?
I would live to know, I have done mine halfway in for 3 years, only had luck one year
I always planted them all the way in. I mostly use horse/cow manure, but only about every 4 years or so

The stalks come first - the onions come later. Garden tour coming soon :)
Have you done a video on planting leeks? Seeds or transplants? I did search your videos but didn’t see it.

I grew red onions last year with poor results as they were small. Will try another spot this year to see what happens. Wondering why you planted that far from the sides?
Just left room for mulch. Also, there can be a little shade close to the sides sometimes. Also... no real good reason... :)
I bought some shallot sets last fall and sowed them last fall. I think that was a mistake! A couple have come up, but the others simply disappeared :(

Um, onions like slightly acidic soil…
It will still be slightly acidic, it was super-acidic
I find that when I plant sets, they always bolt on me. :(
Sometimes the odd one bolts - that can happen. Not sure why they are all bolting for you - perhaps they under some sort of stress?
At this coolish time of year is it okay to leave mulch off to let the soil warm up a bit?

Plants can be surprisingly hardy! You can plant onions and Maybe even spinatch already
How big will they grow?
The biggest might get 3" diameter
Use a screwdriver handle to make the hole. Its the perfect shape and size. Also, soak the sets over night and it helps them come out of dormancy quicker. Two things that I have success with when growing onion sets

Love your channel. Wish I could visit I am also a gardener in NS but I do the raised metal beds to save my back. Looks ugly but works well. I've tried starting onion from seed inside a few times with poor results. I may try sets someday red onions are expensive!
Thanks - yes they cost a little more but are much easier.
I planted this depth previously, but I find with airy soil deeper works better (one full bulb length bellow ground) - onions seem to be less resistant to wind if higher. Also at least for me deeper ones grew larger. This is contradicting every single piece I saw or read 😅 I guess you have to try, and trying with onions is easy - love them!
Great video and at just the right time. I just bought onion plants instead of onion sets this year. The are tiny sprouted onions packed together. I assume that I plant them in a similar way as you have shown. I live in a high mountain valley with not a lot of rain (6 inces per year) and have had on and off success with onions. I don't think I was giving them enough water in the past. Is there anything different that I should be doing with these onion plants instead of the sets. My garlic that I planted last fall is thriving, so I must be doing something right! I have learned so much from your videos and appreciate all the work it takes to produce them along with working full time and raising a family!
Seems to me like water is a big concern for onions, I had a hard time growing good onions, only had nice ones when it rained a lot in the year
I've never started them that way - but I would imagine just do everything the same and they should be fine.
I'm in New Brunswick, I had some Onions left in a garden bed from last year, it survived winter with no cover! Already 1 inch tall shoot coming out! April 27 2024
They will probably go to seed

Great video Greg, we haven't bought many onions in a number if years. We grow a huge amount of leeks and use those most of the year. We buy the odd Vidalia or red onion when really needed. We plant a bunch of onions and those get us through summer and fall (as green onions until they bulb up), then the leeks get harvested about December and that gets us through until the summer!
Went a bit overboard on garlic last fall though so we are using some now as green garlic as they are over a foot tall and about 3/4" diameter on the stems! Come to think of it we haven't used store bought carrots or parsnips in a number of years either!
Totally having fun in our garden!
