European players are killing it in the league today, these guys are just jelaous. Tatum, harden, lillard, steph, lavine, trae young, zion, all stars in this league and they're all subpar on defense. None of these guys are european, why are euros at fault for bad defense of the players I mentioned?
That was the most bigoted, ridiculous, bullshit take I've ever heard from this guy and there's been some bad ones. Gil has a large platform and should take some damn responsibility for his influence over kids and casual fans. i know he's a hot take artist for clicks but maybe have a little integrity? either way his argument has zero basis in fact and here's why.
1. the league became more of a three point shooting league when steph and klay came on with the warriors and teams tried to copy them, also james harden championed the step back three, were starting to see american born gaurds come into the league today who were obviously influenced by steph and harden. also the drive into the paint and kick out to shooters thing was invented by lebron james, not to mention its just a good, efficient way to play ball! thats why you always hear ppl say surround lebron with shooters!
2. adam silver is on the record saying the rule changes/foul calls that have made defense go by the wayside in the league were to make the game more enjoyable for fans to watch, therefore bringing in more fans, not so "soft" euros can make their way.
3. some of the toughest, most physical, dominant players in the league today are euros, look at jokic, giannis, and luka. you can argue jokic and luka have heavy feet but to say jokic is a bad defender means you've never actually watched him, and for every jokic there is two or three guys like trae young, james harden, lamelo ball, jordan poole. not cause americans are worse defenders just there is more american defenders. also if you actually watch a euro-league game you will understand that their league is way more physical than ours. (i guarantee you gil has never watched a full euro-league game).
4. 23 percent of the league is made up of players from other countries. even less of that percentage is euros specifically, and even less after that is euro's who are actual starters on nba rosters. so if the argument is that euros are ruining defense and that if we ship them all out defense will come back to the league then you're just plain wrong cause a majority of the bad defense is being played by a majority of the players in the league, especially the ones who start and get a ton of minutes. earlier in the episode gil was making fun of the clippers for letting lebron run rough shod over them, every player on the floor for the clippers during that fourth quarter run was american.
5. in conclusion, im not saying euros or americans are better defenders than eachother, you could make an argument for americans being better at point of attack defense overall compared to euros but saying euros are the issue with the high scoring league we have now is just plain ignorant. the issue mostly comes down to the way foul's are being called and that the advantage in getting by a defender has been given to the offensive player, bigs also cant camp out in the paint and protect the rim like back in the day. Gil, please shut your mouth.
Get rid of the gather step is one thing. That would stop all the missed traveling calls and also allows the defense to check players closer which hopefully makes it a little harder to score.
Not sure if changing the rules would do anything, if they refs don't call games by the rule-book now. Change the commissioner to somebody who makes sure the game is played by the rules.

If anything the modern ruleset makes it harder for these slow-footed Euro offensive talents like Doncic and Jokic to stay defensively viable. Luka and other Euros have said it's harder to score overseas. It's harder to score in Europe than the NBA because there is less space. Court slightly smaller, three point line is closer, and most importantly there is no defensive 3 second rule. Get rid of the 3 second rule.
